Newbie here looking for advice

I just discovered this forum and am having a great time reading the threads!

I haven't quilted for years now, but I had put together a top and now I'd like to finish it.

Should I go ahead and wash both the top and the backing? It's been sitting for years and is quite wrinkled, so I'm not sure about just ironing...

I'm trying to decide what type of batting to use. I figure cotton is more expensive than the poly? Is one easier to work with than the other? I plan on using a regular old sewing machine for quilting... will it even be possible? It's a queen sized quilt...

And for my last question, how do I decide on a pattern? The top is just 4 colors, all large triangles...

I'm fairly sure I had a plan when I put the top together, but it was so long ago, I've forgotten! ;)

Thanks for any advice!

Cathy
