I had the same problem as Caroline 1947 but today I found a nice piece of plain black 100% cotton. You've' chosen a really beautiful pattern and will make a lovely quilt, especially in the fall colours. I'm going to give it a try and see how my blocks look. Don't sign me up yet though, let me see if I can get it to work out first :)

I haven't done one of these yet. Sounds like fun. Put me in for 2 blocks.
One question to any of the previous winners what did you do with the blocks?

I have a question about this block,,,the hsts will be a 4 in unit when finished,,,,but the piece with the stem says to square it to 4.5.Is this a mistake or am I missing something...

SOMEONE WHO IS DONE, PLEASE HELP ME WITH THE STEM:

Caroline said she "read it wrong" on the stem -- well I have read it 20 times and something is not right.

The instructions say to cut ONE STRIP that is 1-3/4 x 7 to make the stem. UM -- subtracting the 1/4" on each side, that's still a 1.25" thick stem. Which looks really fat. The stems in the picture are NO WHERE NEAR as fat as mine. AND they say to trim that part of the block back to the 4.5" square, which the finished size makes sense to me but how to trim this block back to that now that it's all fat and oblong is confusing which makes me think maybe they meant a 3/4" strip?.

Is there a misprint on the width ot the stem strip or am I REALLY reading this wrong? In TWO places it refers to it as ONE 1-3/4" strip.

I followed the instructions exactly and yes the stem looks fat. It doesn't look as bad all assembled so I think it is just a poor pictorial representation in the instructions. If we all follow the instructions, they will at least all match each other. The center mark of the stem is important as you need something to line those two half squares up to.

I just finished mine tonight,,yes the stems seem a bit fat to me too, but I aint changin em now!!! To square up my stem piece,I just kinda eyeballed it,using a small square up ruler, but you could cut a 4 and1/2 in square piece of cardboard and draw a diagonal line through it,,center that on your stem, and it should come out fine.Here is a sneak peek at mine..

Once they are all put together the stem does not look as fat as I thought it would -- though still bigger than anticipated. OK, I'm back on 'em! Thanks guys.

I hosted a baby shower for a niece's second baby and now my other niece is expecting her third so I am going to give her a shower and then I am getting out of the shower business for a while. They are fun though!!!!

Hi Red, Mine were mailed today along with this months strings.....These blocks are so pretty....Did you or anyone happen to see this months issue of Country Woman? There is a table topper with the same block pattern but the directions are different and it seems the way they do it, you waste fabric. I did put a topper together but like our pattern best..
