There was an article in our local paper about this organization, sounds great. No income restrictions, $30.00 a month for a box of food that will feed a family of four for a month. Includes meats, vegetables, fruit, cereal milk and eggs. With the costs of everything so high this could help everyone.

We tried that a couple of years ago, and to be honest..the food wasn't all that good! Half the time we didn't get what we'd ordered and they'd substitute it with something else. We finally decided it wasn't worth the hassle.

People who raved about it here when it first come out now have nothing nice to say.

Too high in fat...
too high in sodium...
not always what was ordered.

Thank you everyone, the news has had me a little down, but he is already recieving calls on his resume (isn't the electronic age something) so hopefully it won't be long. My blood almost boils when I think of it. Everybody wants young people, who will work for half the money (usually do half the work too) On the good news side, we have finally convinced MIL to move closer to us, (very close we will be able to wave to each other from the back porch) She has been living alone out in the country since her husband passed away two years ago. We invited her to live with us, but she didn't want 'to be in the way' (her words not ours). When a little house on the street behind us came available we took her to see it and she is buying it! (she already has a firm contract on her house) So she should be moved in by the end of next month! We are all very excited. She is 74 and we have been very worried about her all alone. Michele I am so excited for you about your greenhouse! you are such a lucky girl, can't wait to see it built! Melissa, what a beautiful home you have! So many windows too! I agree with Tracy, better cover up those ladies, they look very cold! I love forsythia, mine are blooming now lots of yellow sunshine in the garden the daffodils are blooming too! Tracy wow! what a deal on the tile! I have ceramic in the baths and kitchen and I LOVE IT! (it's cold,) but so easy to clean, always looks great! Don't forget to get no skid mats on those tiles! (nothing worse than having the mat slip out from under you when to step out of the tub! well now that I have said hello I feel a little better, we are supposed to have 'weather' wind, rain' all day today. Welcome! One resource my friend uses for lower cost food is Angel Food Ministries. You pay $30 and get a big box of food. Chicken Feet Soup from: Mangiamo (lets eat) The Sabastiani Family Cookbook 1970 The Sebastiani Vineyards 10 Chicken feet 6 chicken wings 2 quarts water 2 teaspoons salt 2 stalks celery 1 onion 1 clove garlic salt, pepper to taste 1/2-1/2 cup pastina (fine pasta) cooked according to directions on package Scald chicken feet in salted boiling water, then remove skins and nails. Return to 2 qts fresh boiling water and add wings, vegetables, and garlic. Let boil an additional 1-2 hours. Then strain and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve soup with a fine pastina and place chicken parts on a separate platter to serve. If available, chicken necks may also be added to the soup. Add to boiling water along with chicken wings and vegetables. I was overjoyed when I found this recipe in a magazine. My Mom used to make this when I was a kid it was so good. My girlfriend came over for lunch one day and has never forgotten that day.

Obviously, you're looking at your shortterm problems. As you should. However, for the long term? if your husband is a school teacher, there's absolutely NO reason why you couldn't get a parttime job in the evening. Work a couple of nights a week at a store, or in a restaurant, WHILE your husband is a father to his children. Being a teacher, he has regular hours. You wouldn't be the first couple to work opposite shifts so that the family can be taken care of. My sister worked days, my brother worked the overnight shift for YEARS when my niece was little so that they DIDN'T have to use daycare. There's a huge added benefit, too--your children should have the enormous opportunity to spend time alone with their dad. It's a good thing for you to be out of the house several hours a week, so they can have that. Actually, whether or not you have a job, you SHOULD be making sure there are several opportunities a week for them to spend time alone with their dad--it's vital to them both. And what about working from home? I know many, many women who have found ways to make money from home, so they can raise their children AND help with the family finances. I used to smock children's dresses that sold in upscale boutiques, some women I know make between $50,000-100,000 a year recipe contesting. Another woman was doing work at home on her computer for a local mortgage company. Others have done done things like: call the subs for the local school district or hospital; made crafts throughout the year and had a home sale before the holidays, in home childcare, yes--can collecting or picking up stuff from the trash on trash night to resell at flea markets or on E-bay. Assess your skills, and then put your thinking cap on and figure out a way to make them pay. You have to be a little creative to make it work, but it's definitely possible, and if being home with the kids is important, you have a lot of incentive to make something like that work. Also, have you spoken to someone who can help you with your budgeting? I don't know what kind of expenses you have, but it does seem a little unreasonable that a teacher's family is in this desparate a financial situation. Teachers generally start at $50,000/year (around here, it's more like $60,000) and their salaries just go up and up---especially if they take on extras like clubs, independent studies, coaching and other activities. But in any case, teachers make good money--and many have other good paying jobs in summer. So it may be that having someone who can help you organize what you've got coming in would be a very important step for you to take at this point, so that you can get back on track. Look, I totoally 'get' that you want to be there to raise your children yourself--that's admirable, and I think--very important. IF (and only if) it is doable. From what you're describing, right now, it's not for your family. You DO need more money coming in. You do need to sit down with your husband and brainstorm what solutions you can come up with that will let you make a little extra money, that will have minimal impact on the kids. They are out there. And once you get through the next 2 weeks, it is time to really figure out what you're going to do to prevent being in this same situation over and over and over. Good luck to you

Some members of my family get this and they have all been satisfied with the food.They say it is a lot of food for the money and everything so far has been good and they have been doing it for over a year now.I have been wanting to try but always miss the sign up dates.LOL They have different packages too besides the $30.00.I know there is a $70.00 one and I think another one.

We tried it for awhile but most of the meats are breaded and fatty meats. Get lots of chicken.

They quit doing it here, I think, because there wasn't a place to do it. Cars would line up for blocks, and the wait was sometimes several hours or more. The food was "so so" -- yes, it's a lot for $30 but we didn't like some of the stuff in the box.

My mother has been participating in this.

She's, on the whole, VERY happy with it.

Yes, they make substitutions because they may not get everything that they think they're going to get. That's not surprising.

Some of the things Mom hasn't liked, but a lot of the things have been just fine.

If you don't like some of the things in the box, do what Mom does...

Pawn it off on your kids. :-D

I have been very pleased with the food that I have purchased through this group. It's not like this is government surplus food or anything. It's purchased in bulk from resturant supply houses. I think it's a great program and due to the poor economy, it's a program that's needed to keep people from being hungry. As for the meat being "fatty"....not in any of my boxes.

Wow I never heard of it...there are several things on the menu that I couldn't eat but all in all it sounds pretty darn good...

We've been buying this for just about a year now. So far the food has been pretty good!
