Tell Me Your Favorite Tile Companys

I'm researching tile for my backsplash. At the moment, the only top names coming into my head are Ann Sacks, DalTile, Artistic Tile and Armstrong.

What's really sad is I work in the design business, although not directly any longer with specifing these products, which is probably why the names of manufacturers is escaping me. If it were 2 years ago I probably could remember at least a dozen of them. Now, not so much.

Anyway - I could really use some other names. There are a couple of Ann Sacks tiles which are calling me but I'm not totally sold on anything yet, and I have time to decide (I'm not closing on the house until May 10th, so I can't even start purchasing anything until my mortgage wraps up, don't want to jinx anything!).

OK, here's one. How to water a front yard garden and also my boulevard. Hmmm a garden hose and me standing in several locations. I even set up a chair. In about the middle of this area is a Chinese Elm tree that was getting larger than I wanted but since I hang things (g.junk of course, squirrel/bird feeders) from it I didn't want to cut it down. So my son and I loped off the top 15' of it leaving about 20' of tree. Each year I trim the new growth back somewhat and give the top a crewcut. I mounted one of those 5' tall rotating sprinklers that you set in the ground on the very top and ran the garden hose along the remaining tree trunk and over to a Y valve with a flow control. When I turn it on it sends out a gentle rain in about a 20' wide circle or less that is real close to a summer shower. People walking down the sunny sidewalk all of a sudden look around in wonder cause they cant see the sprinkler amongst the leaves of the tree. Kids ride up and down the sidewalk on their trikes/bikes to cool down and my lawn/garden gets about 90% covered. Next year I might mount an oscillating sprinkler that will cover a rectangular space. The first day I tried this method I sat on a lawn chair and watched the coverage and the sun was low in the west. I got a rainbow that went from one part of the yard to the other and had more colors in it than any rainbow I ever saw in the sky. No matter what I did after that day I could never repeat that effect. I marked the spot at the left end of that rainbow and one day I will dig and find the 'pot of gold' I think.

If you really want useful information, I second the notion of posting on the Laundry Forum. There are some folks there who are as knowledgeable and obsessed with W/D's as folks here are about ranges and dishwashers. I will say that to get useful information, you need to supply as much information as you can. Asking "what is the best [fill in the blank]" will never get you an answer, as there is no such thing as a "best" range, or DW, or washer or dryer. The better you can outline your needs, the better the advice will be. So, for the W/D--how much laundry do you do? Is the top priority cleaning performance, capacity, reliability, "green-ness" (water and energy consumption, special features (sanitation cycles, steam dewrinkling, special cycles), etc. Where will they be located? (Many front loaders vibrate excessively if installed in an upstairs location, as opposed to on the slab of the basement). How much space do you have? What's your price point? Oh, how fun! If I need to sleep on an overnight flight I find Nyquil works. Also, as you may have heard, the most important thing is to spend the first day out in the sun and stay awake as long as you can. If you can power through day 1, and not go to bed until dark, you should be on track the entire balance of the trip. Make sure you wear something very comfy on the plane to promote sleep, and if you are not in class of service with amenities, bring your own eye shades, etc. You also may want to take Heathrow Express to Paddington and get a taxi from there. It's quicker and if you are arriving midweek, avoids a nice chunk of the horrible London traffic. It is very easy to do and a very nice way to travel, just ask. As far as London things that might not already be on your list, you may want to do a tea somewhere. I like the Savoy for that but there are many great choices. If you want to grab something quick, Pret A Manger is not bad for lunch etc. As far as a daytrip, I would choose to add Bath or skip Stonehenge. Stonehenge is not far off the motorway and to me its setting diminishes its power. By contrast, Bath is an entire, lovely city, and of course has the lovely Roman ruins. Far more interesting to me. To me the best part of Scotland is the gloaming! Having now been to Alaska too I guess it's really the same thing. But the light is so beautiful. epsecially in the country side. We had a late night tour of the castle, which made it seem more romantic and was certainly less crowded. You have to take the boat at night in Paris, the Bateau Mouche (?), but don't do the dinner cruise. Even though its touristy the boat is the best vantage point for the buildings and the bridges, too. My fave bistro is Balzar, just because I know how to tell the taxi that it is "pres de la Sorbonne". There is hardly a bad bistro in Paris I suppose. Get a picnic and take it to the Bois de Boulogne's little park called the Bagatelle, with tulips the size of a dinner plate. Definitely get hot chocolate at Cafe Flore, where they serve a pot of hot chocolate (unsweetened) and a pot of hot milk and you mix it yourself. Nestles Quik it isn't. Shopping for food in paris, especially Laduree, or Mariage Freres, is a delight. But I also love the restaurant supply store Dehillerin. A wonderful place to buy mementos of Paris. I guess one has to see Versailles, but it is kind of an eyesore inside. The gardens are the real treasure, and the small accessory buildings. I preferred out day trip to Chartres, lovely little town and cathedral.

I love my KWC faucet. It's not too tall, so doesn't splash, the sink is 9" deep. I like the fact that the spray can be activated by pressing down with the wrist. I find it more ergonomical than having to twist my wrist and use my thumb to activate the spray. I went to a place with a large selection of faucets and tried them out. It was $375, so pricey, but worth it.

I am looking for subways that look vintage/crackled but are machine made and priced accordingly. The best values I've found so far in that middle category are: Trikeenan Modulus, Heath Basics (both about $16 SF), Sonoma Stellar and Rixi. I am leaning toward Trikeenan Modulus. The Walker Zanger Gramercy Park are gorgeous but priced higher --

Architonic is an amazing resource site for designers. There link page is mosaic. They show amazing large tiles too.

Oh. I just realized that I linked to a boring page. If you get into the mosaics you'll find all kinds of pieced tiles, like birds and scrolls, not just squares.

Porcelanosa has nice stuff, Sicis (sp?), DalTile Modern Dimensionstile is a nice twist on subway tile 9larger format tiles), Villeroy and Boch.

Love Trikeenan. They're great people with gorgeous tile, and I love the eco-friendly aspects of their tile. Also love Pratt & Larson, Granada Tiles, and Grazia. Quite a few folks here have used Grazia Rixi. I just saw a gorgeous new line from them that's a larger format subway in these subtle, sophisticated neutrals. Beautiful!

And if you happen to be near a Daltile design center you should definitely make an appointment and look at all the samples - they had other makers too. Like a kid in a candy store!

I got crackle subways from Tilecrest - Montecito collection. Not as many choices, but they had a cream color that worked for me and the cost was about half for nearly identical tile from Sonoma. But I got a custom mosaic from Sonoma for behind the range :)
