Please tell me your favorite washer/dryer!!!

I want to buy washer and dryer asap, but there are so many kinds of W/D. Please tell me satifaction of your favarite W/D. And first of all, which is better gas or electric dryer? I heard gas is better, but what ways? cost? or performance? second, is steam washer worth paying more? Please give me pro and con for Steam washer. Third, which brand is satisfying you? I love to buy W/D that is good performance, energy saving, quiet, please recommend your favorite one!! What else should I know before buying.

I love my Fisher & Paykel top loading washer and top loading dryer. Clean clothes, large loads, easy to use, fast, and economical on energy and water use.

I've never had a gas dryer or the steam washer.

We had a Henckels paring knife for thirty years. We used it on hard cheeses, mostly cheddar, Gruyere, and Manchego. Last week, the blade split in half. My sense is that line Henckels has diminished in quality since 1983, so I am not going to replace it. Perhaps you could call this source and ask about their recommendations. no mine are not stacked but they do have the kit to stack them I saw on their website. I have done loads of various sizes and all in all the time is pretty close to what it was on my old top loaders, on the FL the wash takes longer in general I would say 50 mins but the dryer is very fast so takes much less time there. I usually dry mine on the less dry setting and even when doing a load of sweats and towels only had 2 items that had to be put back for a few more minutes. Yes I do my sheets and comforters, I follow the advice from the website and add some towels in with it so that there is less twisting. I have not had any problems with wadding or twisting so far. I had been worried about it since I read so much about that happening, but in reality it always happened in my old set so I expected it to happen in the new ones to some degree. Mine are set on my tile floor which is on a solid concrete foundation and I have no vibration. I do not have pedestals.

One thing I would change: Get the delayed start timer to be more able to measure timeframes that are less than an hour. The one I have lets me choose hours. Apparently also less than an hour, but it's not very fine-grained there. The dial LOOKS like it takes delay start times of less than an hour, but it doesn't really do that. Sometimes I'm going out to do an errand, and I want it to start and finish before I get back. Instead, it hasn't even started yet when I come home, or it has barely started. Defeats the purpose. Counterproductive. The complete opposite of what I wanted. Frustrating. So, I've had to teach myself to turn the dial to the last click (also very coarse and not very finegrained). Even then it's not impressive. Why can't I have a delay of 10 minutes? Why can't it be easy to turn, and reliably set at ten minutes? OK, I realize that many will say "who cares" and "why do you need to delay start for ten minutes". This is the feature that I want, for my own reasons. It will determine my next purchase. If I move I'm selling with a wonderful FL washer already installed and in its place. HTH

jxbrown, fwiw, I bought a bunch of those to put on my oven racks. Yes, they do work...but they were a PAIN! I could no longer slide things on/off the shelf. I found them to be impractical...jmho!!! I don't care for mitts, either. Or the silicone pad. I just like the good old-fashioned terry cloth pot holder. I bought some newer quilted ones (not terry) that won't bend easily enough to grip the pan! LOL! I'm always on the search for terry cloth potholders. If you really want useful information, I second the notion of posting on the Laundry Forum. There are some folks there who are as knowledgeable and obsessed with W/D's as folks here are about ranges and dishwashers.

I will say that to get useful information, you need to supply as much information as you can. Asking "what is the best [fill in the blank]" will never get you an answer, as there is no such thing as a "best" range, or DW, or washer or dryer. The better you can outline your needs, the better the advice will be. So, for the W/D--how much laundry do you do? Is the top priority cleaning performance, capacity, reliability, "green-ness" (water and energy consumption, special features (sanitation cycles, steam dewrinkling, special cycles), etc. Where will they be located? (Many front loaders vibrate excessively if installed in an upstairs location, as opposed to on the slab of the basement). How much space do you have? What's your price point?

Once you have those outlined, then let the laundry folks take a rip at it. You'll get great information.

Well, Whirlpool Duet isn't my favorite.

I came to this site looking for a reliable replacement brand. I am so ticked off I took the time to register here to vent.

My Duet set is 15 months old. Two repair visits later and it still does not work. The central control unit and door switch have both been replaced. No effect. Calls to Whirlpool's 800 number is a waste of time.

I have learned that Whirlpool's quality has plunged in the last 3 years. Repairmen are swamped.

And by the way, Whirlpool also makes Kenmore, Amana, KitchenAid, JennAir, and Maytag.

I have a 2 year old Whirlpool Cabrio that has been awful from day 1. The frame and outer cabinet has been replaced because of holes that rusted through and the water pump has busted 4 times, spilling water all over the floor every time it washes.

Whirlpool told me this week that they won't replace it but will continue to fix it WHILE it is in warranty. I have NSI as an extended warranty company which as you all know, is pretty useless.

I just had another water pump put on it this week so I'm going to sell it while it's working, at a great loss in price, and get something else. I will NEVER get another Whirlpool appliance strictly because of their lack of customer service.
