Should range be flush against wall?

Please help me settle this debate with DH.

We are encountering our first "issue". DH (with assistance from hired help) just moved our duel fuel range into its new location. It is not resting flush against the wall - rather, a couple inches away from it. So, when we put our counter in, the backsplash of it (we will be installing laminate tops with 4 inch backsplash attached) will be flush against the wall, while the range is not. So, won't that look really bad??

I asked DH if they could recess all the connections into the wall, and he said they connected it per the manual that came with our range, and that "that is the way its supposed to be."

Am I missing something, here?
