Update: Powder Room Professionally Staged and I'm still unhappy

Hi,

I wanted to update everyone who posted on my original thread. Thank you for taking the time to give me your ideas and opinions. I can't seem to make up my mind and I'm wondering if I would have been better off hiring an interior designer?!? I'm sure I would have saved a lot of money in the long run. This is insane!! I can't make a decision for the life of me and I used to run my own company?!? Enough of my ranting!! This is what I have so far:

DD 10 years old knocked over oil diffuser with her beach towel and ruined the finish on the table. I pretended to be upset but I think it was a blessing in disguise. What's in this stuff?

Paint samples:

I like the greenish color the best. The colors are all BM.

Nimbus Gray (lightest blue) My teenage DD wants to paint her room this color

Heather Gray (greenish/blue)

Smokestack Gray (very dark blue/teal)

Storm Cloud Gray (greenest)

I have 2 more samples to pick up tomorrow.

Dunn Edwards-Elemental Green

Dunn Edwards- Union Spring

They're both in the gray/green color family.

Here are the BM colors I'm leaning towards.

Old Salem Gray Tate Olive

Hancock Gray

Hampshire Gray

Dry Sage

If anyone has photos of these, please post!!!

Rosewind: I purchased Photoshop Elements and had to return it. My new computer came with Windows Vista (Ugh!) and it kept freezing during installation. This operating system has been trouble from day one. I want to give a huge THANK YOU to you and all of the photoshoppers on these boards. You guys are awesome!! I just painted my master bed and bath a gorgeous silvery blue color -Sherwin Williams Silver Mist 1619. If you are interested in seeing it, email me (from My Page) and I'll email you photos.

Have you seen this bath on RMS? I love the color! I tried a bunch of samples on my powder room, too, but I forgot to get a sample of Smokestack. I am liking Phillipsburg Blue on my wall, but I am going to go back and get a sample of the Smokestack.
I think this bath on RMS is stunning!

organic don't be quite so amazed - DH's business is Residential Engineering ;-) The only amazing part is his finding the time (and interest) to do our own stuff! Thank you johnatemp sarschlos the light fixture is one I bought for this house - none of the originals were here when we bought but we installed several vintage ceramic ones. When I call the old floor original it's misleading - not original to the house because that room didn't exist. Our old kitchen became part powder room part mud room and that floor is the one I designed and we put down in 93. Not sure what I was smokin'then because the colors didn't relate to anything else in the house and its way busier than I like!

LOL, ZAMSX is right. That goes for everybody living in the house. It is a pain to live staged. I used to spray the closets with Fabreeze "Linen & Sky", pour Pine Sol down the bathroom drains, and mop all the way out the door for every showing. Yup, certifiable. LMAO today. When we were selling a staged house my DH kept asking: When am I going to have my stuff back?!!! I'd say: Soon Dear. As soon as we sell. Soon. LOL Silicon Valley. Wow. I'm in NE. Two different worlds. How's your market? MB- Euro shams would be nice, and 2 regular, with the purple one popping the finished look. -Do you have a couple of white or light slipcovered Parson's chairs for the FP area? Borrow them. Any small chair slipcovered for warmth(Target has slipcovers) will work. Kitchen- Stand the 3 paintings (12x14 or so)leaning against the backsplash wall, vertically , but not completely straight. If you have lights shining on them from lights under the cabs would be nice. The reason I mentioned BM Silkien Pine in the kitchen is because its considered a neutral green. Some buyers are sensitive to green, some are sensitive to blue. You can't win. A couple of light rooms with pale grey/blue, or pale grey/green are fine. The rest should be in the off-white/ cream/beige family. You shouldn't have a problem finding paint to go with Ivoire. Any BM Neutral Whites will work. BTW- I read where you're considering making one of your sons' bedrooms into an office. Don't do it. Leave it as a bedroom. One den downstairs is enough.

Hi extremely patient GW virtual decorators, I took rosewindÂs advice and found a few inspirational bathrooms and/or powder rooms. I love the last two bathrooms the best!! I found them on Rate My Space and what I like about them is their simplicity and clean lines. I included bathrooms with pedestal sinks and/or bead board with the same clean lines. This is my dilemma, aesthetically speaking, should your home be decorated in a cohesive manner? Can I paint and decorate this room as a separate entity of its own or should it blend with the rest of my home? What IÂd like to do is paint it either grayish blue or grayish green so that the molding and baseboards pop. IÂd then paint the mirror frame metallic silver and change the toilet paper dispenser and towel ring to match the mirror. IÂm still not sure what to use to store extra toilet paper. IÂve included pictures of my entry, dining and living room since theyÂre the rooms surrounding this one. The powder room is to the left of the stairs if youÂre facing it from the outside. All this trouble for one teeny tiny room. Thanks

The point with paint is, pick your battles. Make sure the bathrooms and kitchens are completely up to snuff first, with a clean, well cared for look. Make sure the carpet isn't all ratty, and if it is, have cleaned and maybe get some judiciously placed area rugs. Entrances and exits, doors and windows looking in good repair, clean and fresh. Make sure the walls are in good repair. If you have all that, then repaint, sure. I'm not sure what percentage of people are discouraged by a bad paint job. Here's the deal though, I looked at a house that had been completely re-done, with the most outlandish and garish colors and finishes imaginable. The house was immaculate and maybe the owners loved it, but eeee gads it was so disharmonious to me and my SO that even though the price was right and the layout looked good, everything would have to be redone--paint, floors, surfaces . . . If your whole house is as assertive as the green color of your living room, then maybe yes, paint could make a huge difference. My SO detests green (I love it but that is one of the few areas we are not in agreement on) so he might immediately get a bad vibe with your living room. I love it.

dixiechixie: That bathroom is the reason I want to change my powder room. I love everything about it. If you look at my original post you'll see it along with a few others that are truly inspirational. I wish I could channel this obession into diet and excercise instead of finding the perfect color. My teenage DD wants to paint her room a blueish/gray I have some samples on her wall. Take a look.

Top row from left to right: Heather Gray, Storm Cloud Gray, Smokestack Gray

Bottom Row: Van Cortland Blue, Montpelier, Phillipsberg Blue and Nimbus Gray

Her favorite so far is Montpelier.

mldao: On the left set of colors, I like the bottom right patch.What color is that? I also like the smokestack gray painted in the bathroom but no so much in the poster above. The van cortland is also nice. I'm painting my boys' bathroom Eddie Bauer Shale (someone used it on this forum and I fell in love with it and it just happend to match the shower curtain they already have).

I am just loving the Smokestack gray! I am going to have to get a sample of it.

If it makes you feel *any* better, my mudroom looks similar to your daughter's wall. LOL!

Paint makes me crazy. I just went through this with my kitchen/living area. I did find the perfect color for that, so I am hoping the same will happen with the bath/mudroom.

My bath will be similar to the RMS bath, except I will be having a white marble vanity top. I also have a skylight which will change the lighting. Good luck with yours - I agree - if I could only -put this much effort into being thin!!!

I totally sympathize with what you are going through. I am trying to pick drapes for my living room/dining room (which are right next to each other) and I am going crazy. I have returned different colors to the store about six times. Nothing looks right! It seems like it should be so easy, but it's not.

Your inspiration room is fantastic. That color is so sophisticated. I really love it. Good luck!

dixiechixie: I love Smokestack Gray but I'm not sure if would look good in my powder room. It's roughly 8 X 6 with a 9 foot ceiling and no windows. I still want it!! Please post pictures of yours when you're done painting. I then can transfer my bathroom lusting to yours.

mlraff53: The color on the left side bottom right patch is Storm Cloud Gray. I like it the best so far. I have around 6 or 7 more colors samples to put up. Do you have pictures of the Eddie Baur Shale? Who carries Eddie Baur paint?

tarzy: I have made so many returns in the last 6 months to Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Z Gallerie and Home Goods I'm sure my picture is posted in their back room (serial returner). The guys at my local paint store know me on a first name basis. I feel your pain!!

Have you made a decision on which drapes to use? I have a really pretty linen colored one from RH in my dining room. I hired a home stager/redisgner to work on quite a few rooms in my house and I loved what she did with my dining room. They were originally in my LR but I replaced them with chocolate velvet drapes from PB. The stager took my linen drapes and sewed a topper using left over fabric from my slipcovered parson chairs. I wasn't sure if I would like them but once they were up I thought that's pretty cute and clever.
