color for b/w damask curtains and cherry furniture

I need some color suggestions for my home office. I have black and white damask curtains, and my office furniture is cherry. It is 12x12 room with one long thin window that is off centered on the wall. I was thinking along the lines of blues or greens. (I dont like bluegreenish colors though). Thank you in advance for your suggestions. Near me, is SW, BM, lowes, HD, farrell calhoun.

Blue rather than green, I think. Did you check the "Blues" thread on the Gallery side of the forum. Some really beautiful blues there.

OS, thank you for the link. I think i'm agreeing with you, blue. I looked at the link. it is such a tough decision. I really dont have an 'eye for color'. any suggestions would be do greatly appreciated.

Oh, well, I totally understand that. In that case, I would definitely get a ready made and not take on project of making something now. You can always do that later and not waste much $$ if you stay in the same color family. I like the idea someone mentioned above of a toile in a softer gray than the black. Or maybe in the short term just a pretty, fresh new white one and paint the walls a soft gray like mentioned above. Good luck with the bathroom and the baby! I have those same windows in my great room and kitchen. It took me a while to figure out the treatments because I need some privacy (they look out on other houses, but our house is quite a bit higher and that afford us a lot of privacy as-is). I normally would have done blinds but I didn't want to mount outside the window frame, yet didn't want to lose the little windows when the blinds were pulled. I also have 9 ft ceilings... I went with 108" panels mounted just below the ceiling (enough clearance that I could dust the top of the rod/panels). I went with a double rod and paired the panels with good quality sheers. If we need a bit of privacy, the sheers do the trick - if we need more privacy the panels do the trick. I took this pic when replacing the rug in there so it isn't focused on the windows, but you can see the approach: I have holdbacks installed for easy access. Normally the sheers are pulled and peek out from behind the panels just a bit. I got all at JC Penny's. I had no problems with matching lengths, just a snafu b/c ALL packages of the green were labeled as orange, and vice versa. They've since fixed this by changing the names of the colors (e.g. their website will now sell the green color, which was originally tortoise, as "burnished bronze" and the rust color as "tortoise"). The sheers came from the JCP outlet store. They are lush, not your typical sheer. And only $9.99 per 108" panel! (We won't talk about how much the 8 panels cost, but the outlet store did have 95"ers for $8.99 per SET. Crap, I love working near the JCP outlet store! BTW, there are two panels on either side, 4 panels per window, so 8 panels for the two windows. I wanted back tab so I had to get insulated, which are narrower than the non. They are all the same length, but I know others have had problems with that.

I think Burnt Sienna they sell is the Glidden BS but my understanding is that they are one in the same, that ICI and Glidden are now soulmates in corporate amurika :-) It is such a gorgeous color. It looks like it has been baked on the walls. We used the PeptoBismol pink primer and 2 coats of BS. I wish I could have that color again but you know we live, we change and we move on and look back.

It shouldn't necessarily be possible from a couple feet away to tell whether a given board is veneered or solid. Edge banding is typically a disaster waiting to happen and should be avoided at all costs. MDF panels, if you go that way, can be edged with solid wood, a much more robust solution. With solid wood every board is different, and care and attention has to be paid to color and grain matching. (With factory-made cherry cabinets this is frequently, and glaringly not done, then the differences are badly disguised with stain). Plywood will typically be more uniform and free from sapwood. The style of door is the primary consideration. Frame and panel doors with raised panel have to be made from solid wood, Slab doors can be done either way. Frame and panel doors, if properly made from well seasoned wood almost never warp. Slab doors will be more prone to change shape with changes in humidity. Some pieces of plywood move more than solid in my experience, other less, and sadly I don't know how to predict which is which in advance. Veneer comes in a myriad of forms, either rotary cut or sliced, The sliced veneer can be laid up in random, repeating, or bookmatched patterns to achieve the look you want. A specialty plywood supplier will have all of these options available for a common veneer like cherry. A cabinet maker can also make shop-made veneer to exactly match solid wood parts, assuming he has the sequential boards cut from the same log to permit precise matching. There's no end to how crazy you can get if you're really fussy about color and grain in cherry!

Since I am also minus an eye for color too, my suggestion is how to help decide on a color.

I would suggest you try Lowes as they can mix a paint sample of any color you would like to try out. They have mini containers of paint for only $3.99 and can mix up any of the Valspar colors (Benjamin Moore also has samples but limited colors). Some beautiful views in Lowes Laura Ashley collection and also a "Summer Retreat" line they have right now.

Purchase 4 or 5 sample containers and then buy a pack of
8 x 11 poster board ($2.99 at Walgreens in the office supply aisle) and a few of those 29 cent foam brushes at Lowes and put a couple of coats of each color on the poster board. Move them around the room in different light, living with them a few days and then choose one. Much easier than splotching paint all over the walls.

thanks tinker for recommending poster board. I already have 3 sample colors on the wall. so that idea will come in handy. i'm not sure where to start with the blue. would a lighter blue compliment the furniture and curtains? or would a darker color? I just dont know where to begin.

Shannon: Think about the mood you want to have in the room. Do you want it to have a bright and lively energy to it? In that case, you might want to go with a more vibrant blue. Or, would you prefer a more contemplative environment? In that case, you would go with a more subdued blue: a subtle blue-grey blue would be lovely. If you want neither lively nor subdued, a nice in-between might be something like BM Palladium Blue.

Certain green paint shades and certain gold yellows (i.e., BM Philadelphia Cream) look great with Cherry Furniture as well as blue shades. I will look for pictures for you.

thanks again OS. Unfortunately, i dont have ellen kennon near. I think a subtle blue-gray would be pretty also. I would like for the room to be elegant, classy, and beautiful. can you recommend a blue-gray?

But now I am thinking since this is not a kitchen but a home office, a soothing blue-gray would look nice and be easy to work around.

I have BM Linen White Walls in a Pearl finish and bright white trim in my office with my Cherry Wood Furniture. I prefer to work in offices that have peaceful colors that do not distract me from my work but that is just me.

shannon: Most people don't have an EK nearby--it's an internet business. But she will also consult by phone. :)

I think a blue-gray would be beautiful, but I can't recommend one to you, unfortunately, because I don't know of any. Can you start a new thread, asking for recommendations for blue-grey colors and pics of blue-grey rooms? That might be your best bet. :)
