Red, I really love this block - so much that I'd love to do a block swap with it. Not to throw a monkey wrench (or a rotary cutter?) into your plan, but I think with a block swap we could get some really great fabrics and it doesn't seem to hard to piece together? But if not, I'll probably make a block or two (and take my name out of the running, since I won last month). --Amy

Okay...I NEED HELP! This pattern is not working out, or I'm just stupid today. I do not speed sew the squares like the pattern says, I cut and do each one by itself. Well, on the ship and flags, it says to trim the HST to 1 1/2 inches. The other blocks are cut at 2 inches. Well, I trimmed the HST and the 2 inch blocks, and now I have 4 blocks that measure 1 1/2 inches. That does not total 6 1/2 inches..which is what the ship block is supposed to be. What the heck am I doing wrong? I am so confused now, that I can't even figure out how to get 4 patches to measure out (when sewn) to give me a 6 1/2 inch block.

I love this block...but I just can't figure it out!!

could someone check out the pattern and please let me know what I'm doing wrong. And if it's just me...could you please let me know what size each of the blocks are supposed to be???? I really want these to turn out nice.

The pattern is wrong. The HSTs for the boat should be 2" not 1-1/2". The HSTs for the pinwheels 3-1/2". I do my HST like you, and cut them to 2" and it worked out okay. This reminds me of a funny story. There was a study done and the assignment was to put together a chair. They purposely gave the wrong instructions so the chair couldn't be assembled correctly. Every man said "must be something wrong with the instructions." The women said "I must have read the instructions wrong." I try to keep this in mind when I read instructions - sometimes THEY are wrong, not me :-) No DUH for you! --Amy

Whewwwww! thanks Amy! Holy cow, I was driving myself nuts. And, I'm TERRIBLE at math, that's why I figured it was me. I get it now. with the two outside 1/4 inch seams, it measures 6 1/2!!!! YEAAAAAA!
My hubby is a carpenter, so when I need technical stuff measured or figured, I make him do it. He knows all those tiny little "teenths" on the ruler!! lol. But, he's out in the garage.
Saved my sanity sista! thanks bunches!

I'm going to try to get at least 1 block done.

any thanks to those who test drove the pattern before me so I wasn't pulling my hair out at 3am. :) I made the correction on my printout.

2 hours later...I have 1 done...no more! Oy! I just about gave up. The difficulty was probably due to trying to use up scraps instead of doing speed piecing. I'm happy with the end result. Cute block! :)

Marcia emailed me back from Quilter's Cache, and the problem is fixed! So, when you click on the link at the top, the instructions/patterns you get are CORRECT!

Well, I FINALLY got this thing done! You just wouldn't believe the trouble I had with this block. The points on one of the pinwheels just wouldn't match up and that's the way it is. I can't do it over one more time. It took me the better part of the day to make 1 block and I'm glad that's all I signed up for! I'll try and get it in the mail tomorrow.

How about something VERY easy next month, Red. :-)
