Blue Apron, Plated, Hello Fresh or other meal service?

I am thinking of ordering a 3x a week meal service for our family over the summer and then continuing the subscription for my daughter when she goes back to college in the fall. My thinking is that my daughter and I can prepare the meals together over the summer and she will be more comfortable cooking for herself when she goes back to school. Our friends have been using Blue Apron for several months and have been very pleased with it. The husband, who has never cooked before, has really enjoyed learning to cook with the recipes cards and highly recommends Blue Apron for my daughter, a beginner cook. She will still have a limited meal plan at school, but because of her class schedule and team commitments, she prefers to make some meals at home.

Does anyone have any experience with Blue Apron, Plated or Hello Fresh? Are there other meal services that I should look into? Thanks!

We just started Blue Apron. We have done a few weeks now. What I find is that it plans the meal for me, a big plus. Does the grocery shopping and sends fresh ready to cook ingredients (like ripe avocado, we don't find those in the store), very nice. The recipes haven't always been home runs for my tastes, the only down side. I love to cook, but finding the time to plan out an entire meal, shop for it, prep and live our busy lives hasn't been happening. I view this as an easy way to get 3 home cooked meals on the table a week without having to do too much other work.

It has also exposed us to new foods which I like. For instance Lingonberry jam was part of a recipe the other week. I'd never heard of it, but it was yummy and worked perfectly with the dish it was paired with.

A side note, we have been ordering 2 meals for 2 adults and 2 kids, if I throw in a bag of veggies it feeds us all without leftovers. We are going to try 4 meals in an upcoming week. You can only order in increments of 2, so I'm not sure if your daughter wants leftovers of everything once she is back to school.

I signed up with HelloFresh not too long ago and have had a very positive experience so far! The meals are creative without being difficult, and the quality of the ingredients is really excellent.

The only downside is the cost -- it comes out to about $10 per person per meal, but considering they take all the planning and shopping out the equation it's not so bad! I used a coupon code when I signed up, which made it a lot more reasonable. I will definitely continue with the service!

Well, still not feeling great but I did make the stir fry, mainly because I don't have a lot of food in the house right now. It's hard to judge how the food tasted because I have a sinus infection and bronchitis - my tastes buds aren't working too good right now. I don't think I like the coconut flavored rice too much but can't really tell. The recipe had a big serrano chile in it but I only used very little, couldn't even taste it when I ate the meal. There's enough for two more meals, at least. I did find a bug eaten green bean in the bunch they sent me. Since there weren't many beans I thought it odd that they would include one that was covered in bug bites. They were the best part of the meal, roasted in the oven with salt and olive oil till crunchy.

Don't they have any customization options? Even if they don't, you can bug 'em. :) Send them an e-mail once a week, reviewing the choices. Be as nice as you can, and specific. E.g., "I really liked the orange chicken. The flavor was clean and vibrant. Not too sweet. The stuffed pork chop, however, was a bother to make and tasted like cardboard. It seemed cooked perfectly to temperature. Do you have any tips for improving it? Is there any way to opt out of the Trout Bracken? That was disgusting! The herbs were a poor complement for the fish and lemon made it worse!"

Just got our first deliver from "Home Chef". Everything looks good. We have a choice, tonight of Oktoberfest Chicken Schnitzel or Steak with Brown Butter Bordelaise. Home Chef seemed to have the most "family with kids" friendly choices. I recommend you invest in ice packs. There's clearly money to be made in ice packs. I'm having knee surgery soon, and since I shop and prepare dinners during the week, we are trying this out. We've always boasted to hungry kids that we've never lost anyone to starvation in our home, and we are not going to start now. I'm not a menu planner, so these pre-packed meals are going to be a huge help, and we'll get to try new recipes that I would never consider trying. The recipes come with the meals, with holes already punched for the binder to save them! The local grocery stores also deliver, so breakfasts, lunches, snacks and desserts will be taken care of. And we have milk, some produce, etc delivered by the "milkman" every week. Of course I'll be a screaming idiot, having to be housebound for so long, but good food should help keep me sane.

Am I correct that you want already prepared meals vs kits? Ubereats is super simple if it is available in the area-- but whether it fits her needs depends on what restaurants are available in her area. None deliver to my house but my parents are closer to the city and they have full offerings from a variety of different style restaurants... .diners to finer dining... healthy to indulgent. I'd go that route if only because of the variety and because you can decide NOW and have something at your door in 45 min. Some locations offer little more than pizza and sandwiches. I recommend you download the app and load her address in and see what they offer! If it looks like it will work, you can get an ubereats (or uber) gift certificate! There are local services here for meal delivery-- basically caterers who do it on the side or personal chefs... but you need to plan a week in advance.

I've been using Blue Apron now for almost 3 months, and I love it. I decided to start just before the holiday season began because I was feeling overwhelmed with all of the "stuff" that needed to be done. Meal planning felt like the straw that broke the camel's back.

As Imsscs mentioned, I also find it super convenient to have all of the ingredients on-hand, and to be able to try out some new things that I wouldn't have otherwise tried. As parents to 2 toddlers, we found ourselves often eating whatever the kids were eating, and if you know anything about toddlers...well...we were sick of Chick-Fil-A and grilled cheese.

Even if the kids aren't interested in Macadamia Crusted Cod, we parents can cook a Blue Apron meal, crack a bottle of red wine, and feel like we're eating a fancy meal out (while the kids eat their PBJ). haha.
