Bread Drawer Inserts-Preferences?

One of the goals of the remodel is to clear off the counters as much as possible so I'm going to put my bread in one of the lower cabinet drawers. There are two after-market inserts available and I want to know if any of you have had experience with either one.

Rev-a-Shelf

They have a bread drawer insert that is a top slide close in translucent, almond or white. The bottom of the drawer is the bottom of the drawer. They can be cut to fit the drawer. (I'll have an 18" wide drawer by the way). The prices are $35-$50.

Kitchensource

Along with some other suppliers, they offer an acrylic box that is made to fit the drawer exactly. It fits into the drawer and completely encloses the bread. Of course, the price is higher about $190.

I'd obviously rather pay less but I'd like to know from your experiences whether or not it is worth paying extra.

ya know, I had every intention of purchasing one of these after market as well. I would love to see if anyone had further feedback, bumping it up for more eyes.

I've been keeping all my bread in the selected drawer for a year now. To be honest, I can't imagine that a liner would make any loaves last longer, but I'd love to be enlightened. I love having the bread, wraps, etc. within easy reach. and just to have a great place to put it all!!

I do not make much of my own bread (waaaaay too much going on in my life for that, but can't wait till live settles down a bit to try some of the great recipes I've seen here). but I do purchase a lot of fresh loaves (put them in a ziploc). so not sure how much impact this would have.

I originally had planned to get one from my cabinetmaker but eliminated it due to budget. I just store bread in a drawer as-is and it's fine. It actually lasts longer in the drawer than it did in our old pantry!

My bread drawer is the bottom drawer of a 24" wide 4-drawer drawer base.

Today, the drawer is full..with bagels, bread (1-1/2 loaves), kaiser rolls, hamburger rolls, hot dog rolls, English Muffins, and Cinnamon Raisin bread. It holds more than you think it would and nothing gets lost!

After reading about and seeing pictures here, I ordered inserts from Wood Hallow for 4 drawers in our new build kitchen. This was one of the last things left unfinished, so I was thrilled when they arrived today. In our former house, our contractor built the inserts to my specs for two drawers. DH certainly got use to them as he was the one that pushed me to do something. I had drawn out exactly what I wanted for the 4 drawers and emailed the drawings with measurements to them. They arrived just as I had drawn, less a small amount, perhaps 1/8" which allowed for easy inserting into my drawers. The one thing that I was not expecting, however, was that the dividers were mounted on a board that sits in the drawer. As a result, a few of my measuring cups and stacked cookie cutters do not fit in the drawer as I had planned. I was able to turn the cutters sideways and now they clear. The measuring cup handles hit when opening the drawer, but it's something I can deal with. DH won't frequent that particular drawer (I hope) so grumbling will be kept to a minimum. As marcojohnson said in a previous post, this is why I love this place. Never would have found Wood Hallow had it not been for GW. Thank you! Silverware and mostly serving pieces. I had ask for them to keep all the tops straight, which they did. :) The drawer where the measuring cup handles hit. The knife block is from Williams Sonoma. Smaller drawer in my baking zone. Does anyone still use Tupperware measuring cups and spoons? Mine must be 30 years old.

Very interesting responses! Mags438 I was totally laughing about your dog, that is a new one to me, a bread loving dog haha. Cindy Noll, does the SS drawer help your breads stay fresher? These comments have given me some good ideas. I find we will have tortillas, hoagie rolls, sandwich bread, take and bake breads, etc. and it looks so cluttered on the counter. Texas Gem my daughter has stopped eating sandwiches which creates the problem of what to give her for lunch. Hummus and pita, cheese and crackers, lunchmeat rolls, leftovers (if at home) or school hot lunch! I probably could give her mac and cheese, chili or spaghetti in a thermos, but most of my stuff is packed up still from out move (awaiting renovation). Sometimes she'll still take a peanut butter and honey sandwich. :)

I did one ebay auction and emailed them that I wanted a total of 4. Once I provided the dimensions and layout I wanted for each drawer, they emailed me back with what the price would be. I totally designed each drawer for what I wanted, drawing it out on graph paper. I provided exact measurements for the inside of my drawers. What I received was extremely close to my drawings and fit perfectly in my drawers. The one thing that I never gave a thought about was that the dividers are mounted on a board, which causes you to lose some of the height of your drawers. This caused my measuring cup handles to hit when opening and closing the drawers. Someone on GW recommended to turn them upside down, which I did. Problem solved! Love the GW community!

Sophie - To clarify, I wasn't planning to buy them for every drawer...I more mean that I could move them to a new drawer, or order another insert later if I felt I wanted more of the shallow storage spaces and less of the taller spaces. You can't go the other way if you start with the shorter drawers. I've tried mapping out the kitchen as best that I can, but it is a little hard if you've never used the space before to know how it will be utilized. This is a house we are moving to, so I've never used the kitchen and it is being renovated before we move in so we don't have to live through a renovation with two small children. I would prefer to live there in the space first, but that isn't possible. Also, your needs in a kitchen change over time. Right now I have tons of bottles, sippy cups. plastic kid plates, and tiny silverware...but in 5 years, I won't need that stuff and will need more tall water bottles for the kids to bring to sports. I literally have a giant drawer of just baby bottles right now in my kitchen, and won't need that in a few months (unless I have another kid!)...So I can map out my kitchen now, but it will be different in a few years.

If you really want an insert and it's after-market, you might consider "Custom Inserts". They will make one that fits your drawer exactly. While they're not cheap, they're less than my cabinetmaker was charging (over $300 in late-2007!).

I wasn't going to bother with a bread drawer or liner of any sort. But my best friend had the RevAShelf lid and said it made a big difference for fresh/bakery breads. I had mine in a drawer like buehl does and ordered the almond lid and cut it to size. I have found it does keep all our breads fresher!

My freeaer is my bread drawer. I double bag my bread and bagels and put them in the freezer - take out what I need and it's always fresh. Also trying to cut down on bread and other white flour foods in general!

I should cut down my bread consumption but I live in a small town with two wonderful bakeries. It's just too hard.

Buehl, the acrylic bread holder that I mentioned from Kitchen Source is the same as the one that you linked to. It looks nice but after the other responses I think that the Rev-A-Shelf will suit me just fine.

Momtofour-It's great to have the comparison from someone who has used both the Rev-A-shelf and nothing. That was very helpful.

Mairin- I just took a bread baking class from a woman called Mairin. It's the first time that I had ever seen that spelling before. She was very sweet and very informative. Just kind of weird that I associate you both with bread!

buehl - Do you find it a pain to have to bend down anytime you want bread? I'm thinking about a bread draw, and have convinced myself that it would be best to get a 3-draw base and use the middle draw for bread, etc.
