side by side ranges- bad idea?
Comments (44)TO --- Ann-SoCalZ10b SunStZ22 If you read the through the thread (it is long) then you see that Issac Wong used a 60" Vent-a-Hood. "Isaac Wong 4 years ago Nope, no issues -- have used both ranges AND both ovens plus 1 warming drawer at the same time. I have a 60inch Vent-a-hood." I'm pretty certain Isaac Wong used either: 1. 60" Vent-a-Hood PRH18460SS or 2. 60" Vent-a-Hood PRH18M60SS which has less CFM than first hood Here is a great list of Vent-A-Hood 60" wide options: https://www.uakc.com/cooking/hoods/wall-mount-hoods/?resperpage=90&results=16&TYPE%5B%5D=wall-mount-hoods&Brand%5B%5D=Ventahood&CFM%5B%5D=1200+-+1300&Width%5B%5D=60&WADbSearch1=Submit...See MoreSpecific layout quandary involving cabinets on either side of ran
Comments (22)Purrus, we had a very similar problem in the kitchen of a house we recently built. Long story short, some cabs needed to be removed and rebuilt to achieve symmetry. Based on GW advice, we did what sailorgirl did, except the narrow cabinet that filled up the "extra" space on the wider side of the range was made into a tall pull out pantry rather than just a narrow cabinet that was otherwise identical to the rest. I know a tall pull-out won't work for you, but just a thought, maybe consider making the narrow cab otherwise decorative or distinct...maybe with a glass-fronted door, or even making it open shelving. It just helps set it apart design-wise from the other doors on both sides of the range which will now be identical in size, it's a chance to have an accent cabinet....See More24" sink cabinet - Good idea? Bad idea?
Comments (24)Lots of useful points here, thanks. After doing some measuring, we would up tentatively deciding that we'll put in a 36" sink cabinet. We'd have so little room in a 24" cab around a garbage disposal (assuming same model we have now, and assuming the drain is in the center) that we'd be hard pressed to store trash under the sink. So with a 24" cabinet, we'd probably wind up losing 15" somewhere else to making a dedicated trash pull out. Thus it's actually efficient to just go to the 36" sink base. (The 30" doesn't work as well as 24 and 36 sizes, for various reasons involving window placement and ikea sizing.) If we stay with this decision, it seems we'll have a lot of latitude in selecting a sink size / configuration. I'll almost certainly go ahead and move to a larger sink - the question will be whether to maximize the potential of the large cabinet or keep the sink scaled to down a bit since the kitchen is smallish and the window in front of which the sink will be set is just 30". With the current cabinet choices open to me, my main work areas in the kitchen will be 33" to the right of the sink cabinet base, and 54-61" on the left of it. Plus however much smaller the sink opening is than the 36" span of the base cabinet. A little more prep space is always a good thing, but so is making dirty mixing bowls disappear....See MoreFill 3" Gap on Either Side of Range
Comments (31)I was biting my tongue and tried not to comment on the original design. It didn't look really all that useful, but I understand that everybody wants to have their island these days. Now that you posted the G-shaped layout, I don't need to hold back any more. Whew. The G-shaped designed is just so much more functional. It's no contest. I would absolutely prefer a kitchen that I can effectively make a meal over a kitchen that follows the current design goals. And yes, I do agree with the KD that the peninsula looks more old-school. But that doesn't mean it's always the wrong choice. If you do have money to burn, I wouldn't spend it on a bigger stove. Seeing this drawing, I think your existing range is just fine. But you could spend the extra money on a great workstation sink. It'll make clean up and prep so much easier. Take a look at rachiele.com. It's a great site to learn about what makes a functional sink. I love Dino Rachiele's sinks, but even if you end up buying from someone else, use the resources that he provides. And if you really want something cool, get a Miele combination steam oven. Such a useful appliance. But it's unfortunately expensive, especially if you pick the plumbed model, which I like a lot....See Morenapagirl
