Do you really need to use your birthparents information at all? I don't know anything about this organization you are attempting to join, but it would seem to me that adoptive information would be more than acceptable.

well, your adoptive parents are you parents, why won't that one work?

I don't know how this organization works, but the women in my family were all members of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). When I was a young girl, I remember going to the chapter house and fancy parties. As I got older, my mom started asking about me becoming a member. Because I was adopted, I was not a blood relation/descendant to a soldier, and therefore, not allowed to join the organization. My mom quit then and never looked back.

Ann, when Anna was born her mother and the daddy were not married, but his name was still listed on the birth certificate as the father. Does that help?

If I remember right, unless the sponsor is a member of the Legion, you would not be eligible to join the auxilary; so it probably is a moot point. Kathy

An unmarried woman cannot be forced to name the father on the birth certificate. Many do, and some even deliberately put down the wrong name. But just because some unmarried women put down a name for the father doesn't mean they all do.

I am trying to join the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. My birth father was in the Korean war for 4 years. My adoptive father was not a vet. I have a copy of my birth fathers DD-214 (discharge papers) but now they are telling me that I need something with my last name the same as his (birth dads). So, although I am the blood relative of a vet, this birth certificate/name thing is a problem.

Can't you just write to the Clerk of Court at the Tennessee county/town/jurisdiction in which you were born? If you know the city or town where you were born, there's a record at the local courthouse. It may or may not contain the information you need, but you'll have an original birth certificate. There's usually a small charge for producing an original.

I'm not adopted and in your situation, but I did have occasion to need a copy of my birth certificate. This was a long time ago and I simply wrote a letter to the courthouse; they responded saying to send $2 with my request and very shortly I had my BC.

Both of our children were adopted, we had to request a copy of the original pre-adoption certificate before the adoption was finalized. After that the new one was issued with us listed as the parents. Now that records have been unsealed in that state you should be able to get a copy of the original.

I have a copy of my birth certificate, showing my adoptive parents. What I need is a copy of my original birth certificate, showing my birth parents on the certificate. I just spoke to Post Adoptive Services in Nashville and they will be happy to send me a copy of all the records...for the sum of $150.00. Not altogether unreasonable for the time and copies but I've been unemployed since December 7th and finances are really tight. Guess I'll just have to put this off until I'm back to work...soon...I pray!!!

You'd need to know the name your bio mother gave you & her maiden name since they were not md.

You can probably find the cost on-line OR contact your local family history dept. at the library. The latter may also be called Geneology dept. And someone from these library dept. can probably help, too. I'd be surprised if it was more than $20 for a BC.

In my state, you have to state 'why' you're asking for one (or I did when I sent for g'parents inform). I just stated 'family history'. Later, when you're again employed, you could send for the 'whole package' if you wanted to read it.
