Yah, I'll help you Patti. I think it'd be a lot of fun. I'll pick my sisters brain, as she has a group of about 12 gals that meet up at least once a year on the East coast. Del. Fla. Va. She's the crafty one, and has lots of good ideas.

I think the critical thing to understand is that fertilizer is not needed for healthy growth in soil that is well conditioned through years of organic inputs. The key points to focus on is that most soils require years of organic inputs and we aren't talking about a light dusting with compost either. We are talking about modifying the soil so around 30+ percent is organic matter. We also aren't talking about growing award winning giant pumpkins in that soil, we are talking about plants that grow healthy and reasonably. Most trees, shrubs and perennials grow well in soils with low to moderate fertility and compost alone is more than capable of doing the job. Annuals grown for effect whether it be an ornamental flower or high yielding veggy will almost always benefit from understanding the plant's growth cycle and environmental requirements for not just good, healthy growth, but optimal yields and then meeting them. Some perennial plants grown for fruit also qualify. If one wants a nice looking yard full of healthy plants that do well, compost alone is sufficient. If one wants a 5lb tomato or a 1000# + pumpkin then one best start researching the plant's nutrient requirements and fertilizers that will optimally meet them.

Emily, what beautiful fountains! I especially love the copper pot one, and I can't believe you drilled through a rock! It looks great. I've been dreaming of a pond for years now, preferably one with a small waterfall. I don't see it happening for awhile yet, though. Too big of a project to take on at this time. As for mosquito control, I always assumed that I would just use those dunks or granules - no fish planned here. Although I believe that Emily is correct in that moving water disturbs/repels mosquitos. I have to admit though, that I was at my in-laws this weekend, and they just put in a small fountain, and quite frankly, after a few hours, the thing was driving me crazy, lol! I had been thinking of getting a small fountain for my patio, but after this weekend I may rethink that. If it drove me crazy at the in-laws, it will drive me crazy at home - but at least I can turn off the one at home. Maybe instead of a patio fountain I will just do a patio water garden. :) Dee

I'm weird, I guess - I rarely wear my ring. DH and I were "shacking up" at the time, and one day I told him in no uncertain terms that if I was to keep living with him, I ought to at least have an engagement ring, for heaven's sake. He agreed. We were poor folks, and I had a credit card, so we shopped and put my engagement ring on my credit card. Romantic, huh? We bought the kind that fit into the wedding ring, which we bought at the same time, but he kept that in a box in his dresser. The engagement ring had one "big" diamond and one "small" diamond, and the wedding ring had the other "small" diamond to mirror the engagement ring. They're not worth more than $200 all together, but who cares? I'm not a materialistic person. We've got diamonds and rings. About 2 years later, we had a modest, but very nice wedding. I got the two rings soldered together. We bought a plain gold band for him. He wears his every day, and after these 9 years, he can't take it off without a lot of effort and hasn't really tried. I got out of the habit of wearing mine during my 1st pregnancy when my hands swelled. I bought a plain gold band to wear instead, and would wear it as a wedding ring now (it'd have to be re-sized) but he says no, it's not our wedding ring. I find the diamond stuff gets in the way, and I only wear it when I go out somewhere special or care that people see that ring on my finger. As I said, I'm not a materialistic person. We could afford to get bigger diamonds now, I guess, but who cares? Why spend all that money on a freakin' rock?

I'm down to two - House Beautiful and the UK version of House & Garden. I intend to cancel HB soon - just nothing to it anymore and the houses featured look like HGTV. I have shoes older than the editor! I adore the UK version of House & Garden. It's a wonderful magazine, filled with great things, even recipes. I much prefer it to World of Interiors. I haven't gotten hard copy of the daily paper since DH died - he loved the daily ritual of walking up to get the paper at a nearby store. I subscribe to the local paper, the NYTimes and the Wall Street Journal, but all online. Lots less trash!

I would love to come, I am pregnant but not due til November this time. I want to see Diane, I was on bed rest last year when everyone met, and it is an excuse to get to Omaha and go shopping:) Just let me know the time and place, I'll leave the kids somewhere and hop on the interstate.

I couldn't commit with not knowing how I'll feel the next month or so (I'm still having a very hard time with the hypothyroid stuff)and it would depend on the weekend of course. I'd want to have to have a 'KT hitcher' or two as well. I haven't had a girl's weekend in forever so it's definately an idea (or I could bring DH, but that wouldn't be as fun).

Lydia, Stoneybaloney, and Kayjones, live in Kansas City. Hopefully they'll come along. JoannKs is there. Frazoo (Leslie) is in central (I think) Kansas and Toni is close to central Kansas, but in Nebraska, and maybe they can hook up.

Then there's Stacy in Okla. (and Moni if she can), Ron & Baby, Phyllis in Minn., Sandy & Linda in Iowa are not really all that far away. The Pink boid could bring Necci too as she isn't that far.
These are just off the top of my head, and I know there's more, that are within a days drive if they'd like to plan for a long weekend.

Every day of the year is open for me...LOL

someone posted they'd like to come but two of their weekends in Aug. were already booked.

We don't even have to do this in Aug if we'd like to do it earlier.

We have lots of nice motels about 6-7 mins from here...Or I have three acres of yard that tenting would be fun too.

We have lots of antique shops, General Dodge's home that can be toured, Casino's if that's your thing, I'm close to shopping. We have a friend who has a vineyard...a good day of wine tasting.

I had just said August because that's when Moni was going to be here...

Yes, I would like to come. It is about a 3 hr drive from my house. I think it depends on what week-end you choose to have it. I have a couple of weddings, one at the end of May, and the other the middle of June. Other than that, I can't think of anything else. Keep me informed.
