Question: When planting your garden, do you ...

... consider it preferable to set up the rows in a north-south or an east-west direction?

I've done it mainly north-south, but think that each of the plants might get better exposure to the sun if the rows were laid out in an east-west pattern.

We have a fairly wide cultivator, so the rows are 40" apart, which will mean that only the highest plants will cast shade on the plants in adjacent rows. Even so, quite often there are not a large number of sunshine-absorbing leaves near the ground in the next row.

In a north-south row, much of each plant is shaded by the adjacent plant in the same row.

What have you heard in the gardening community regarding this issue? What is your opinion?

Thanks.
