Sink base cut wrong!!!!

My cabinets are being installed today. The KD ordered a 36" sink cabinet for my 30" farm sink so that it would be centered perfectly with the window and not have filler strips on the sides. The contractor assumed that the big sink base meant a big sink and made his cuts. I'm sure that is the way it goes 99% of the time, but I assumed he would have checked the sink before cutting anything. My sink is now too small for the space cut. I am trying to stay calm until I see what the contractor does to remedy the problem, but I am freaking out inside.

Hey there - What type of sink and counter are you getting?

Ours in undermount on soapstone and they sink is actually mounted to the counter. Not the cabinets at all.

Where did he cut it out the cabinet?

So, if they grind it, would they remove the sink first? Grinding possible, but does make a mess! If you decide to proceed, have them cover the work area with a makeshift tent. My KG used plastic garbage bags to contain the dust- one of his helpers had a shopvac going and another held up the 'tent'. They also taped garbage bags over adjacent cupboards. (Mine wasn't grinding a sink cutout, but removing a counter)

mwrede: Did you make a decision and call them back the next day? I really hope not--it's too stressful to be rushed thinking this through! Let me first say that I've never done a remodel, and I tend to overthink things,even after I've made my decision. This is your personal space; it should look as close to your vision as possible. Your idea for the backsplash is better than their's--ditch the side pieces. Splashback isn't so great that they are needed. They really seem to me to be a waste of marble and $$. I wouldn't think mirrors all the way down would be the best look. The round mirrors will probably be too small for the large vanity, but I like the idea of mixing a round mirror over the shorter vanity and a rectangular over the longer one, but not splitting the longer into 3 pieces--too choppy, not as pleasing visually. (I don't know why, but picturing mirror/sconce/mirror/sconce/mirror makes me think of an old Italian style, maybe in a 70s Vegas hotel.) The photos show a sleeker, calmer bath taking shape--all those elements on the wall don't really fit that. (Oh, and yes--you must get some money cut off the bill. That's a given!)

I'm no expert, and it sounds like you've done it successfully many times, but why don't you just cut off the rotted end and stick it in the soil again. It would seem that the only thing that is lost for good is the rotted tip. If you have suspicions about the potting soil, I'd sterilize it before using it, and cover the soil with plastic wrap to keep the phytophthora from getting reestablished.

You are not doing anything wrong, some Echeveria species are notoriously difficult to propagate from leaves for the reason you have given. Echeveria cante is one that springs to mind - simply not possible to detach a leaf to include meristem tissue at the base.

Do you have the space for a bigger sink? If it were me, I'd suggest to the contractor that he can either buy you a new farmhouse sink of the same brand that fits his cut-out (or, of a comparable brand if needed) or else buy you a new cabinet.

I don't think that contractor ever mounted a farm sink before. Almost every farm sink varies in size so they should be templated to the cabinet.

Experienced people never cut a cabinet or countertop without having the actual piece on hand... sorry to say this, but it is 100% the contractor's fault.

You must be so upset to get to the end of the project and have this happen. Hold your breath and wait a little longer. You want this to be done right.

We have a 30 inch sink in a 36 inch base and I actually wish we had gone with a bigger sink -- may-be you can switch? If not, may-be you can make a faceplate that fits the 30 inch sink and covers the current too-large opening? Kind of like a veneer big around the bottom of the sink? We may be faced with doing something like this if the replacement sink has a different contour from the first sink. Stay calm, there are definitely ways to work around the problem.

There are some good ideas here, such as perhaps telling the contractor to pay the difference for a larger sink, but it really depends on the size of your kitchen. A small kitchen is usually better served with a smaller sink and more counter space. A 30" farm sink gives you lots of room to work with, because it isn't partitioned. You can fit pretty much anything in there. I would recommend telling the contractor to redo it.

Honestly, unless you get pulled in, I'd say to let your KD duke it out with the contractor; it's clearly the contractor's mistake and they will have to come to some kind of arrangement without charging you an extra cent.

When it's all finished and gorgeous, you won't even remember this little blip. Best of luck!

e-gads, sorry to hear. agree with previous posters - let the contractor and KD duke it out, it is their problem to get you a new cabinet. i would not offer a workaround, i would hold out for the correct solution. i might also really reconsider the contractor-how in the world is he cutting into cabinets without knowing dimensions? that makes no sense whatsoever. i would be worried using him for the balance of the job.

It is the KD's responsibility to get the sink to the cabinet installer before it is cut/installed.
