Older Pets

I've been reading a lot lately about people having to put their older pets down, or their pets getting sick and dying. It seems that most of them were 13 to 15 years old. I'm sitting here watching my 10 yo cat wash her paws and wondering what on earth I will do when she goes. I've never had a cat live this long, although there was one that my mother purloined from me that lived to be 13, and I had to take him to be put down. Her cats always lived to ripe old ages, and mine always seemed to get sick and die or disappear or get hit by cars (this one is mostly indoors, except when I take her out in the mornings for her constitutional).

I keep thinking I probably don't have many years left with her, and she's seen me through some really tough times these past few years. I thought when I lost my house that I would have to take her to the no-kill shelter, but it turned out I didn't. She's reasonably happy anywhere I am, and I adore her. Just don't know what I'd do without her. Friends say I'd just get another cat and move on, but I don't think so. This one is special. I may get another, but never another like her.
