May Day.....8(

I think this is the first year in about 40 years that I haven't made or helped make May Day Baskets.

It's sad...but I now have the two great grand kids that maybe I'll be able to make some with.

I made them as a kid and sometimes made them with my girls when they were young. The older people especially appreciated those little posies on their doorsteps.

Both sales were fun! I donated some bleeding heart, meadow rue and corydalis to one, plus cut, cleaned and bagged rhubarb. Another hosta (not labeled, but tall and blueish in color) found its way into my car, plus some creeping sedum, a varigated medium tall sedum (cream and green) and something called soapwort. I had no idea what it looks like in bloom, but it's sprawling thing, and I am looking for groundcovers to work into a small swale I am trying to build at the end of the downspout, and thought this might work there. I looked it up at home, and it sounds like it has small pink blossoms and is related to dianthus, or pinks.

Coincidence.

I saw this thread yesterday, and today I was going through boxes of old cards and letters and found this.

On ruled tablet paper:

I will do anything you tell me to do with out fussing. I will eat what you fix me, with out saying I don't like this. Here is a May Basket.

There was a drawing of a pink basket with different colored flowers, and a purple bow on the handle.

Very sweet. I remember making a paper May Day basket in school, then bringing it home and hanging it on the doorknob, then ring the doorbell, go and hide while my Mom came out and gpt her surprise. I filled mine with tiny violets from our garden. Fifty years later I still have a few violets in my own garden 500 miles from her.

Just curious...
I have never seen or participated in a May Day celebration. I have heard of May poles, baskets, etc., but never actually seen them. Is this celebration somewhat regional? I am a South Texas Girl. I can tell you about Cinco de Mayo Celebrations!

I remember way back when in about 4th grade we made a Maypole on the playgound. I think out of long strips of crepe paper then we each grabbed one and walked around it.

DGD posted on Facebook that she loved her neighbors....they had brought a May Basket for her little guy.

We've always made real fancy ones with crepe paper. The edges of the crepe paper would be pinched into scalloped edges and the bottom edge would be gathered and glued around the edges of a paper cup or when we were real small we used quart paper milk cartons, that we rinsed out and saved for the "big day"..lol

We alway put popcorn a few pieces of candy and a spring of lilacs and some lily of the valley.

Some had roses made of the crepe paper on them too.

Lots of fun...we would meet together with cousins sometimes and spend a whole day working on them.

My Uncle Don used to gather the edges of the crepe paper on the sewing machine with one of those old gathering attachments.
