Need help w/ paint in open floor plan

Hi all! I need major help/advice with choosing paint colors for our new house. The floor plan is very open with a two story family room adjacent to the kitchen. The upstairs hallway is visible from the family room downstairs.

Do I stick with the same colors, or at least colors on the same paint strip? That is what I am thinking. I must tell y'all that this was a foreclosure, and that's why it's a mess! We have A LOT of cleaning up to do. Every room needs to be painted and LOTS of interesting metallic wallpaper must be removed. I can't wait to paint the kitchen b/c that color isn't my style at all. The cabinets will be painted white...I am not sure what look they were going for. Right now they look like they were in the middle of a project that didn't get finished.

Anyway, I've attached a few pics that will give you a general idea. The family room/kitchen gets lots of light. The colors I'm thinking of are SW Blonde, or SW Whole Wheat, maybe Restrained Gold. Is that too dark? My current furniture is an olive green but we are buying new ASAP. I still can't decide on a sofa either. I've really had my eye on one of those slipcovered beauties. Argh! Help! I have to make a decision about the paint soon.

what a beautiful home, congrats! I've seen SW Blonde in several pics and it's a very pretty color. Makes a nice back drop. Actually all the colors you're considering are nice. It seems like you have very good lighting and a nice size to the rooms, I wouldn't let the darker shade keep me from using a color if I really liked it. :c)

Thank you! I am worried that the Blonde will go orange with all that light coming in. I guess I just need to buy a couple of sample pots and try them out. I just don't want to have to paint that two story family room more than once!

Thank you so much for the information. I enjoyed the browse! Earlier in the day, after work, I went out and bought a quart of Dunn-Edwards Navajo White, which has a green tinge. Now I think I'm warming up to stepping it up a notch after seeing those pictures. Part of my problem is I have the pretty blues and greens in my nearby living room that would look so pretty with some of the yellow/olive like hues of green. But beyond my kitchen (and visible) is a step down area and den that are a green grey, which unfortunately doesn't look great with the maple, otherwise I'd just carry it on up. I wish the yellow that was on the wall worked, but I don't think it looks good with my silestone. I do like how it looks with the maple though. Here is a picture. I'm hoping a darker green might do the trick to work with both areas. I have spent so much $$ on paint samples that it is embarrasing! :-) Here is a link that might be useful:

I can't view it for some reason. But an island? Yeah, that's hard to eliminate seams by creative sink placement! So let's say you can't get the bottlestone big enough--any way to do bottlestone on the perimeter and Something Different on the island? Have Plllog come up with a neat seam treatment that makes a seam a plus instead of a minus? I see the BS comes in 30" widths, so you'll need some pretty lovable seams to do an island. Unless you do artsy seams, your KD might be right...

First step change all the lighting to LEDs 4000K (daylight) that will help when choosing colors to keep them true.Right now I see a lot of yellow hued lighting As for the kitchen what do you mean by too warm IMO cream is a warm color so a bit confused. If you are going to do anything in the kitchen I would remove the cabinets above and for sure around the cooktop and replace that with a nice stainless hood the rest of it seems quite nice.

We have taken down the half wall that was in our living room to open it up a bit. We are replacing the living room and family room carpet with luxury vinyl-ceramic tile will stay. From the time yiu walk in the front door you can see the living room, kitchen and sunroom. i am thinking of keeping tbe stone harbor that is currently above the bookshelves, but we need to paint all remaining walls, hopefully this week before flooring is installed. (mantel remains as it). The paint is currently a flat paint, but would like to have walls eggshell, can I do that? The wall color I have now just seems dull. I am open to using something besides Stone Harbor. All furniture in LR is going. Thank you foe your help! cindy

I have a double story open floor plan like your lovely new home. I highly recommend purchasing a couple of foam poster boards (because they stand up better than the regular poster boards) and painting them with the sample paints. That way you can visualize what the paint looks like with the light in your own home. It was one of the best investments I made. I ended up with 4 posterboards so that I could do side by side comparisions. It is a terrific aid since you can carry the boards to different areas of your room to see the various effects that the changing light has on them.

I found this thread with lots of pictures of various yellows and golds people have used. Maybe it can help you. It's an older thread so unfortunately some of the pictures are no longer available.

What a treasure you found. How fun to decorate and make it
your own. Lovley place.

I have a double story open floor plan house and I use
a color called Baked Scone by Behr. It is a very light
color but it is perfect.
It has a creamy yellow base to the hue. Image the soft
crust opening to a flaky baked scone and there you have it.

I find it goes with everything. I have changed the color
in my kitchen which opens to the Baked scone about 7 times
and each color from red,blue, royal, yellow, sage green,
brown caramel.. (in fact I need to repaint it again but
that is another post.)

Your idea of Whole Wheat SW is perfect as it too goes with
