Do snide remarks go right over your head?

I must be terribly naive.

We'd been married more than 10 years. We had a monthly pot luck at SIL's house. I brought a huge green salad. SIL picked through it and said, "my, that's a *busy* little salad"

BIL looked up from what he was doing and said to me, in front of her, "Why do you let her talk to you like that?"

I was genuinely puzzled.

Apparently "busy little salad" meant "That's not the way *I* would have done it..."

After he brought it to my attention, I realized that she has always made remarks that were just slightly off the mark like that to me. Especially making comments about my weight. ("I remember when we *used* to wear the same size...")

Do you have anyone in your life like that? Do you "get it"?
