Although a great deal, I am not sure this is the style you are looking for since you think it is just OK.

Get something you really really like!

Unless you want to take your dining room into a traditional and formal direction, I say skip it. From what I've seen of your old house and furnishings and your new house, it's not consistent with your taste.

It's lovely. And an excellent price for the chairs alone.

I don't see it as intrinsically "formal" the way something fancier carved or gilded would be.

It's a great deal and looks in good condition. If you want a traditional and somewhat formal looking dining room, then it is a bargain.

You guys are touching on all the things that go through my mind. It appears very lovely, I was looking for something in solid wood, the price seems good, I know I need new furniture for the dining room. BUT it may not be exactly my style. Truth be told I don't know what my dining room style is. Its a room that is rarely used in my life, but one that all guests will see when they enter the house. So, I'll attach a pic and give a small bit of background...the house is a 1920 center hall colonial (so dining right off the front door), so the table would look lovely. But my style is bit more transitional or eclectic.

The pic includes things that we just brought from our last house and thought we should probably replace. We would like to entertain a bit more.So having a nice set of furniture would probably be nice

I like your current table and chairs. But I understand your desire to be able to be able to expand the top to seat more people.

Keep your eye out, something may pop up that is better suited to your style. If you didn't have a table, and there was a BIG dinner coming that you were hosting at your house, then maybe it would be a good solution, but I think you should skip it and keep what you have for now.

If you have a more eclectic style I would stick with what you have. The set on Craigslist is good value, but is a bit more staid than the room that you've already put together.

it's nice to have an expandable table so you can have a larger dinner party... there are only 6 chairs that come with the set... would you keep your old set of chairs as extra chairs??
i think the table could probably fit easily into a transitional setting and certainly combining more of a formal style with less formal could be eclectic!

The biggest problem with the current table and chairs is that the chairs are too big or tabletop is too small so you can't push the chairs all the way in and that annoys me to no end. If I did get the CL set I would probably do upholstered chairs for the table ends. I just don't know....I like the style but it typically just hasn't been MY style. And I recognize that it is probably a good value and of a much higher quality than would expect to get for $500. One thing that I have been hoping to do at this new house is to get things of higher quality, even if they arent brand new.

Another question is that I honestly I don't know what type of style I would get if i waited. Guess maybe time to hit up Houzz~

I think that set is really really pretty - more feminine to me than your current set-up. It's such a great price too - if you like the curves, I would be tempted to grab it. For that price you could probably resell in a few years without much of a loss. Plus you can add more rustic elements to the room to knock back the fancy if you need to (I love pairing more formal items with something unexpected). Would be fun to build on -

I'm looking on Houzz for inspiration and am finding what I always find when I peruse Houzz. My house is just not Houzz ready, no matter what furnishings I put in there, and I have trouble editing out the gold leafed ceiling or floor to ceiling windows overlooking a canyon to see how the furniture alone looks. And frankly, I don't want to spend a fortune for this room. Anybody have any ready images of how traditional furniture would work in a more transitional setting? Like if I added a more contemporary rug?

Another place to look for inspiration is a new feature on Zillow, called Zillow Digs.

I've linked "contemporary dining rooms" for you. You can see a lot of traditional tables but in a contemporary setting. Maybe something will hit you here.

I personally prefer YOUR set, it isn't as formal. But I can see why you'd want a different table. I'd keep the chairs you have and just keep searching CL for a table.

I don't know. It looks very mass-produced 1990s to me. If I wanted that style I'd get something older from when they put some actual detail into furniture, even if it needed to be refinished.

I would get a larger piece of glass for the one you have.

Thank you for the mockup! That actually helps quite a bit...as well as perusing Houzz and Zillow Digs. I have realized that this set may be solid wood and a decent deal, but I think I would prefer something else. I actually find myself drawn to round table, which likely wouldn't fit my rectangular room, but that is another topic altogether! A piece of glass (which I can get in any size and shape I choose), a rug, and focus on accessories will likely do a lot more for the room than a "nice" table set that doesn't really suit me.

I like the one you have. If you aren't going traditional, I would keep looking. I can't really see the base of yours but as someone mentioned you may be able to add a larger piece of glass.

I prefer what you have now more. Looking at your room it doesn't seem to call out for that style chair and table. I think it might look a little too traditional compared to your more eclectic style (like the chandelier)
