I spoke today to my best friend who has a house in Sarasota FL. HOward owns a 12-yr-old blue and gold macaw. She divides her time between a magnificent outdoor cage and living indoors, and is a really delightful bird. Just in the past several weeks Howard has had problems with possums invading his rather large yard. He's been told, by what source I don't know, that possums are dangerous to parrots because they produce an acid urine that is toxic to birds, and he's afraid that one of them might climb on top of the cage and pee in it. I told him I would check with you, since you're the resident possum expert. Is there any truth in this idea? I've already convinced him that possums don't carry rabies and that they aren't antagonistic to humans. He had never seen one before he moved to Florida, and I grew up with them in the Middle West South. I've always considered them the most gentle of critters (and also the most unintelligent). We'll await your verdict, and thanks very much.
