Tile Backsplash - Tile size issue

I am planning to have a 36 inch by 20 inch tiled rectangle behind our range made out of 4x4 inch tiles. These are decorative tiles that have a border to them. The rectangle was going to be filled in with 4x4 field tiles set on the diagonal. The rest of the backsplash would be 4x4 tiles, but set flat. These would also touch the rectangle.

I was recently notified that the 4x4 field tile will no longer be available, but the 6x6 tile will continue to be available.

My question is will it look appropriate for 6x6 field tiles to butt up against the 4x4 decorative tiles?

(I have looked at the finished kitchen blog's backsplash slideshow, but I didn't find what I was looking for. Maybe that means it is wrong to do! )

We're also in the process of trying to decide on our backsplash design. I've taken colored paper and cut in into different tile sizes to see how different designs will work. It has helped my DH & I to envision different ideas. Why don't you try it with the 4x4 and 6x6 tiles? Good Luck!

I don't see a problem with it. It would serve to accent the framing of the 4x4 piece above the stove. I think you may end up liking that even more than your original idea. :-)

People survive with a tile only backsplash, right? I think that's how we're leaning right now. Our kitchen doesn't have much backsplash as it is (2 1/3 walls are masonry, the remaining 1 2/3 include the fridge, a standard interior door and a very wide doorway). There's one wall between the front wall and the fridge that's got 51" backsplash, and then the range wall where the base cabinet run goes 24"/30"range/24". I had initially thought having the stainless there would be too choppy. I warmed up to the idea since I like the look, but I'm going to take this as a sign. I also may take this as a sign that since we'll be seeing more backsplash and not having to deal with the stainless, maybe we'll get Heath tile in a custom color vs. picking one of the ready made colors. :) The big issue is that since we don't need a lot, we'll pay more per square foot. :: We looked at a lot of pictures last night and I would be fine switching the trim on the range to one of the higher backs, rather than island. DH had dismissed it before, considered it, and decided against it. I think we'll be good with tile.

Hi Katie, Demo starts tomorrow, so no pics on progress yet, but I'll post when I have some. I'm working a little bit with a KD, and doing the rest myself with cabinetmaker. KD suggested open shelving like in the inspiration pic (but in stainless, specifically). I think it would stress me out though, lol! Having all of my bottles and stuff right out there (the range area is the focal point to basically my whole downstairs living area). My pantry rarely looks fabulous, and I'd be moving the pantry out into the open. So, I think we'll be making the vertical column things on either side of the mantel style range area into pull-out shelves for sheet pans, spices, small bottles, etc. I considered the open shelving with a pretty display of white bowls and dishes, but then I'd lose the storage space for the stuff I really need at my fingertips. Here is a link to google, how that backsplash should have been installed. There are some u tube videos too. I watched one video, where they used grout, between the countertop and the backsplash, and grout should not be used there. Caulking shud be done between backsplash and countertop. My backsplash is also caulked in all the corners, rather than grouted. Once you watch these videos and read these articles, you will see that your thinset was put on improperly, and thats why your tiles are falling off. ngng - I did what you suggested and cut some tiles out of paper. Excellent idea! Thank you :)

Bill - I think you might be right. I tried filling in the rectangle with 6x6's and 4x4's and the 4x4's won out. But the bigger field tiles seemed to work fine elsewhere.

I know this looks like a 5 year old did it... but it did help me a lot! (And no... these are not my colors.. just used for layout purposes.)

I am planning on 4x4 field tile for my backsplash.

There is a LOT of it out there. And my tile store says getting colors matched isn't a problem.

Could you change kinds? Or is that a stupid question?

Growlery - Not a stupid question at all! I guess I am a bit spent on this whole project and the idea of keeping it simple and is rather appealing. So... you are right on the mark with your suggestion!
