Everything is up. Last night ears of fresh corn were 88 each--grapes on special 1.49, but were old. Yes there is a lot of waste because many of the fruits and veggies are imported and then transported all over. Also if the restaurants would cut the amount served it would help. I cannot believe the amount of food wasted. But then if they did cut the amount served, people would complain about that.

I bought corn on the cob last night here in Iowa at "WalMart"...Three ears for 99cents

It was really good, better than some of the local corn I bought last year during the picking season.

DH wanted cherries last week (he loves them). We passed on them when we saw they were $4/lb. A little too pricey.

And it all just keeps going up!

I remember buying cherries last year at around $8.00 a pound. They had absolutely no taste -- so I took them back (something I had never done before). At that price, they should at least have tasted somewhat like cherries.

It seems with most produce nowadays the prices keep going up and the quality keeps going down.

I used to enjoy grocery shopping but everything is so high, it's no fun anymore, just a challenge to see how you can save money.

I look at the price of groceries like I do the price of gas, I can't do anything about it
so I'm not going to stress myself out over it.
I still buy what I want and drive like I always have.
I do feel sorry for those with limited incomes because prices increase but their incomes don't.

I look at produce prices here and think they are high just because everything is shipped from CA. I guess that isn't the only reason and that produce is high everywhere.

Maybe we will have to go back to the good old days... when we only bought fruit and veggies when they were in season.

Shipping all that stuff from all over the world is expensive....

My brother grocery store chain is selling a 4 pound container of California cherries for $7.95. Some of the other stores are selling them for $2.99 a pound.

Meat, chicken and fish is very expensive but produce that is imported from the US has come down in price due to our strong Canadian dollar. Transportation costs will soon make the prices go back up. My bread hasn't gone up yet nor has the flour or rice. In store baked goods are very pricey - 1 crusty bread roll starts at 89 cents.

Lately the stores have been having good sales on chicken, pork and ground beef. My brother store was selling bags of fresh bone in chicken breast quarters for $2.00 a pound on sale. He lowered his store's price to $1.00 a pound because he said he got skids and skids of chicken in. My freezer is well stocked with chicken now. LOL

I find dairy products are more expensive - butter is selling for $4.99 a pound but I did get a few pounds at $2.99 to put in the freezer for future baking. I don't buy ice cream anymore because the good stuff is almost $8.00 a container.

I like to shop at the local farmer's market and I live close enough to where local produce is grown and sold on farm stands along the side of the road. I picked up some locally grown asparagus last week.

Paper products and canned cat food are expensive. My dogs dry food is the same price it has been for a long time.

I have to shop the sales and don't buy any extras. I buy only what I need. LOL I can't remember when the last time was that I bought a magazine at the checkout - my pets need their food more than I need a magazine. LOL

My friend Vicki helps run a food bank and she says their useage is way up. Lots of people around here are losing their jobs because of plant closures and downsizing.

When you buy produce out of season, as Linda points out, you will pay more. They are shipped from another country or distant area of our country and that costs, especially with fuel so high now. Having said that, yes, prices are going up. Saw reference yesterday to the fact that potatoes are still a good buy in the starch category. Lots of nutrition in them for the money.

Cherries are on special this week for $1.69 a pound and I shall buy some tomorrow. I try to buy only fruits that are in season. I bought bone-in chicken breasts (with no additives)for 88 cents a pound last week. My freezer is well stocked since I buy meat when it is on special. DH and I are retired on a fixed income, so every cent of savings does help. We are not fanatics about it, but do try to save whenever we can. I don't know how families with three or four teenagers are managing! Bettye/AZ

I am sure a lot of food is thrown out in the grocery stores. You would think it would be better to sell it at a reasonable price than to throw it out.

I don't understand it.

I am like Jenni If I am wanting it I buy it regardless of the price...their is nothing we can really do about it.....I do feel as she said about those on fixed income...I can't imange what or how they make it! Stacy

Living in CA you'd think produce would be pretty reasonably priced here - NOT! Cherries for $4/lb. is not in my budget. DD loves pears & they've been almost $2/lb. recently.

I believe we are being gouged with the price of gas as the excuse. A half pint of raspberries or blackberries in my store was $7.00. Cauliflower went up 40 cents a lb. overnight. I don't know how people with several children or people on fixed incomes, and who have to drive, are going to be able to deal with this.

California cherries are $3.99 a pound here. We buy lots of fruit and bite the bullet, but then a package of cookies is almost as much as that and the cherries are better.

We're retired and, I guess, on a fixed income. But isn't everybody really. When we worked we had a fixed salary with maybe a 3-5% increase each year. Now we have pension and SS and usually get 3 %. I guess I'm dense, but I think everybody's on a fixed income.

Since it is just my DH and I most of the time, we eat out a lot. One of our local resturants has a 6oz sizzler for $5.99 with salad, bread and potatoe. I drink water, but DH drinks soda so they get us there! LOL I could not make it for that! I can honestly say eating out can be cheaper than eating at home some times. I realize that's not always true though.

Pattie43, I so agree with you about everybody being on a fixed income. I have often thought about that. Of course there are those who have a lot of money and can even live off of the interest, etc. I don't begrudge them that. Somebody had to earn it.

But I'm not one of those, and being a "Depression" baby, I grew up knowing how to make ends meet, and I deplore waste.

Yesterday I went grocery shopping. I prefer name brands in most food items, especially canned goods. But this time I bought Kroger brand in everything that I needed to make that great Taco soup; they happened to be on special this week. BIG savings.

Also LandOlakes Buttery Spread was $1 each. I bought 5, and had coupons that were doubled, making them cost 56 cents each.

I stopped at WalMart to get Cheerwine and found it on special for Memorial Day. 12 cans @ $2.50 each. I bought 4. When the price is right, I always buy several of any thing I use regularly.

And while I was at WalMart I got the free MCD's chicken sandwich!

Had a pretty good shopping day!!
