Tell me how you are using quartz versus stone countertops

I am reading a few posts about quartz issues. Recently, I saw a "new kitchen" (less than 6 months old) with white quartz counterop that had a huge rust stain from a presumed cast iron pan. I was on a tour with the designer and the owner was not there. (it could have been a burn mark) Do I have to be this careful? On my current laminate, I think I could just scrub off the rust. I have had small rust spots that came out over a short period of time.

What I really want to know are the issues of heat tolearance. Right now I have laminate and I put the cookies/pans out of the oven on the stove top or a large trivet made of stone. I like the idea of stone so I can put the pan directly on the countertop.

For those of you with stone, do you put stuff out of oven directly on the counter? What about quartz?
