I finished my 2nd quilt a couple of weeks ago....3 pix

and thought maybe you'd like to see it.

It started out as something entirely different, a railfence quilt, using about 40 different bright colored fabrics for the 2.5" strips. I hated it, it was too chaotic, so I've been tearing the blocks apart (all 42 of them, ugh) and I decided to make it into a stacked coin quilt. It took a while and lot more different fabrics but I came up with this. Since I "made lemonade out of lemons" I backed it with lemon fabric and gave it a lime green binding after FMQ'ing it with a stipple pattern. 16 bobbins later, it was done. It measures 63" x 82". That's about as large a quilt as I ever want to work on, I really dislike wrestling fabric under the presser foot area. I did learn something, though, right after I quilted it- I hear that it's easier to quilt if you turn your machine so it's at a right angle to how you would normally use it. I'm going to try that really soon.

Our new kitten, Nosey Parker, likes it a lot, she tears around on it and under it and thinks it's hers.

Now I've just started a zigzag quilt- there's a quilt along if anyone wants to join in over at Flickr. It's so much fun to see what everyone else is making theirs with and seeing how different a look you get when you lay things out differently and use different fabrics. (I go by FlossieBlossoms over there.)

I thought I would check in before leaving for the weekend. Yesterday was a day from hell. I am asking you again for prayers and support for my family. What I am going to tell you is almost impossible to believe. It concerns two of my nephews. One is ninth grade, the other away at college, finishing up his senior year. Last week my brother and his wife received a call from the ninth grader's school, saying that he had suffered an "episode" and recommended taking him to the doctor. To make a long story short, he had gotten extremely stressed out at school (he is always on the honors list) and just cracked. They described it as a manic episode. He is seeing several doctors and has gotten better, went back to school yesterday. When talking to my mother yesterday morning, she said she had started receiving some very bizarre emails from our other nephew, who is away at college. She didn't want to bother my brother, because of everything they had been going through with the younger son. I asked her to forward them to me, and gosh almighty, they were more than bizarre, really out of it, almost suicidal. So I told her I was going to track down my brother and/or his wife at their work and let them know. To make a long story short, this nephew has also suffered some sort of manic breakdown - they tested him and did not find drugs or alcohol in his system and will be committing him to a mental hospital for evaluation. My brother is with him, as my sister-in-law had to stay home with the other son. I was hesitant to post this on a forum, but I believe in prayer and that it can help heal, and my poor brother and his family need it in the worst way. They are just stunned and in shock. They are the last family you would think something like this would happen to. Very stable environment, very supportive of their children. Thank you for letting me share.

I did not buy the settee at this time. None of my coupons were working and the chickie on the order line was being difficult about it, so I gave up because the price difference would pay for a set of wood blinds. Maybe next time it goes on sale they'll work, or it'll be on a better sale. Windypoint, I adore all the Victorian trims, although I do have to exercise some self-restraint to avoid overwhelming my DH. He is extremely tolerant but he does still have his limits! The chair cushions are getting a nice deep-eggplant piping to match the same color in the (very very subtle) paisley, I have some lovely big olive-colored tassels for curtain tiebacks, and pillows will be generously trimmed out as well. I use few pillows (too many and they end up thrown on the floor) so they have to have "oomph" visually. Can't hack the pompoms though. :-) Hoosiergirl, the Morris chair is actually very comfortable! Appearances can be very deceiving. DH is picky about where he plants his butt and he claimed it as soon as it was brought home. It fits him perfectly. I've already said it's getting new, thicker cushions, the existing cushions do suck big time. Squirrel, thank you for eventually actually reading what I wrote. :-) I'm getting kind of frustrated with that in general, I end up wondering why I even bother writing/explaining anything at all if all people are going to do is look at the pictures? I've definitely learned my lesson though, I'll only post the barest minimum of pictures, if any, from now on. Thank you for the mockups, but I had to crack up at how the fabric you put on the Morris chair is showing on my monitor, as a very bright lime-tinged olive green with gaudy bright purple splotches. *chuckle* I'm also giggling at your very carefully working around organic_smallhome's end tables - I've been trying to weasel those out of her for ages so her old couch wouldn't get lonely for them! LOL I'm so bad! I have my eye on a couple of end tables in a couple of antique shops here that I am certain pretty much everyone here would absolutely detest but I really like. As for what happened to my old living room.... uh, I moved? ;-) ;-) ;-) The leather couch has been moved to what used to be the dining room - it was too large, squat and heavy for the living room, but the dining room is open to the kitchen and so the leather couch isn't as much of a hulk in there because the total space is greater. The upholstered bench is also in there because it, too, is too big for the living room. Dark wicker chair is in the guest room because a [expletive deleted] mover cracked one of the legs, and the leather chair and ottoman are in the bizarre little bedroom we use as a library because it is SO huge it doesn't fit anywhere - it's the only piece of furniture besides the bookshelves in the library! The camelback couch is smaller and less massive-feeling, much better-suited to the smaller living room. NO way am I buying a new couch for the living room. Good grief, I can't even imagine throwing away a good quality, extremely comfortable couch that I already have, that's just crazy talk! It's probably going to be some years before I can afford to have the couch reupholstered. A deep eggplant fabric would be my preference but it would probably be a neutral caramel-ish sort of color for more practicality. I do plan on a new slipcover for it but it is going to have to wait because nice slipcovers get pricey (especially when you're incredibly sick of microsuede and duck/twill just doesn't work for the room). Too much else on the right-now list!

Karlene, May be an 'essay', but I feel like I'm standing in your sewing room w/you while you show me what you're doing! - which is way cool!! You mention peach fabrc, which is funny bec I'm using another of the peaches sent to me by ?? (sorry, forgot already:( She didn't care for the color. I've made an apron out of one of the calicos (adorable!) & am putting 2 more into a quilt that I just finished designing a few days ago. I'm excited to start, but swore I'd quilt & bind 2 & finish assembling another before I cut even one strip. -- & it's hard! let me tell you!! Haven't added to my Baltimore Album, that first block (center 30" sq) was so large that I'm counting it for at least 2 months' worth - sounds logical don't you think?! I did also finish up a scrap quilt, so it's not like I'm sitting on my hands or anything. I'm also doing 2 throws for DH' friends who have been driving him to work the past few wks since his truck died & we can't seem to find a decent replacement. HOPEFULLY I have at least one of them in my stash of tops waiting to be quilted - going to check that out today - it would save me a little work (& get another one off the pile of 'wait-ers') I think that's it, but I'm already mentally going thro that 'wait' pile, so I might as well get up & go do it! Happy quilting everyone! Remember, one of these days we'll be outside in the gardens & away from our machines, so make them sing while we can!!:-)

Week 3: What I accomplished today!

So to finish out my week, I did the king-sized, 4-years of furred bedding at that Laundromat I mentioned. I don't sleep in the MBR, having lived in it without heat, air conditioning, plumbing, extension cords strung through the walls to the fuse box, with 7 cats & their littler boxes for almost 5 years. It's been the cattery, where they lounge on their king bed, as all cats should. Did you know that at the Laundromat, (and if you did, why didn't you tell me?) you can put 3 loads' worth of laundry in one, giant machine? Or two, extremely furry heavy king comforters/quilts in one!!?? Talk about a time saver. I did 7 loads of furry bedding (and some clothes) including some pillows in less than 20 minutes. OMG, pinch me. The GIANT dryers were fantastic!! I could put all the bleached stuff in one huge dryer, so those 7 loads were handled by 3 machines. You could stuff a few bodies in those dryers and no one would be the wiser. Until later, of course. It cost me about $30.00 in coins. In time? Lunch I had with a friend? In excitement about these cool machines? I feel like it all came out about free. YEAH for Laundromats! Came home, (ohhh stuff is still in the back of the truck at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon) took and took a well-deserved nap. I slaved, you know. THEN I mowed the other 2/3rds of my lawn. That's just under 2 hours. Watched a taped Game of Thrones. Can you believe Oberon's head was squished? I'd forgotten from the books. Gives a whole 'nother meaning to "If I want any crap out of you, I'll squeeze your head." Oh, how incredibly tasteless of me! GD&R! Actually put sheets on the daybed I've been sleeping on, with one of my cats I sequester. She pees and poops everywhere, so her room is gated with sheet linoleum down on the hard wood. That's a day late and many dollars short, because that floor is probably ruined, anyway. She's so social, though, that even though she's roaming free in the daytime, she lets me know she wants company to sleep. Loudly and incessantly. I bought some twin microfiber sheets online. I was using king sheets folded in half. Uncomfortable. We'll see about this microfiber thing, though. They're very soft, but I can't tell if they breathe at all. Can't wake myself up gasping at night. It's bad enough snoring wakes me up and there's no one there to blame. Go figure. All in all, I had a less than (standardly) productive week, but I'm pretty happy with it! (How is it I always write a novel!?) You guys, too!?

I love it, the colors are great! I think your lemonade came out very sweet. And of course it belongs to Nosey Parker, it matches her perfectly. I completely agree with wrestling the fabric in the machine. That is one reason mine are mostly lap quilts.

Susan, Susan, Susan...what a beautiful quilt!!! You should really show your first quilt too. Your first quilt has inspired me more than you know. And you are not making my decision to get another fur-baby very easy at all. ~LOL~ Nosey Parker is such a doll.

Anyway, job well done and thanks so much sharing.

That's really pretty. You did a wonderful job. I had a FMQ teacher who turned her machine at about 45 degrees and it seemed to be more out of the way there. I also won't try a king size quilt, at least with my current set up.

Thanks, everybody! I'm so glad you like it. Here are a couple of photos of my first one- I thought I'd posted them here already, sorry if this is a repeat. Oh, and do you notice a theme? I like bright colors and that's about the only kind of fabric I buy, usually. This was a quilt along with Oh,Fransson back in March/April.

I stippled this one, too, it's about all I know how to do. I just made a placemat and did an organic straight line quilting which I liked doing a lot, so simple, not perfect, fun!

All the cats really love the quilts, I could barely do the binding for all the "helpers" I had. lol

Oh, I love both of them! That "first quilt" is stunning and certainly surpasses anything I would expect for a first work. It is art!

Nosy Parker is a perfect name for a curious young cat, and perhaps she also realizes how beautifully her color goes with the white in your quilts.

Thank you so much, everyone, what a bunch of ego-boosters you all are!

Honestly, joining a quilt along was the only way for me to go, it was inspiring and getting further instructions on a weekly basis was perfect, enough time to get the assignment done and then more time leftover to get excited about the next bit to do. If left on my own, I tend to lose interest. And when everyone posts photos of their work, it's inspiring and informative, to see what fabrics they're using and what I liked and didn't like about them. The trouble is, though- I tend to want to copy 3 or 4 of them and I just don't need a bunch of quilts!

And the main reason I didn't give up on the lemonade quilt is that I had cut up 40 fat quarters and I didn't want to waste $100 worth of good fabric! I'm making all kinds of things out of the strips- Pity Potholders, Scrappy Neck Wrappies, cat collars, a cat blanket, etc. lol I'm trying to recoup some of my losses, 'cause I'm so mad at myself!

Biwako- Nosey Parker looks less than white when she's on the quilt, but if she lays in just the right spot, you can't even see her. lol And she is one of the reasons I'll never be able to use black sashing in anything I make, darn it! White cat hairs on quilts- not pretty!

Flamingo: Ha, ha! I have one black & grey tiger cat, whose hair shows up on anything light, and another cat with white and orange fur, so practically no matter what colors I use (or wear), the cats can provide some contrasting fur! They are, however, visible, no matter what they choose to sit on.

Thank you all very much. Addicted? Yeah, kind of, I guess it's a natural progression from making small stuff and handbags to bigger things, but since I don't really need a lot of quilts or have room for them, I don't know that I'll be making many. I have a whirlygiggle pinwheel in the offing, using Neptune fabrics, and the zigzag quilts using Lakehouse hydrangea fabrics (2 throw sized) and one railfence quilt using Kaffe Fassett's materials, and after that I hope the bug flies away for a while! I will probably go back to making smaller things but maybe I'll be piecing fabrics to use for those smaller things.

Thanks again for looking at my quilts.
