QOTD July 23th

Do you always have someone or something in mind for a quilt before you make it. Or do you sometimes make a quilt just for the sake of quilting.

I almost NEVER make a quilt without knowing who it is going to or to give away for a charity thing or the other.

I have never made a quilt just to do that pattern.

It varies. Sometimes I make a quilt because I have a person in mind, other times I see a pattern I want to make. For one of the first quilts I made, I decided I needed a purple quilt and bought a lot of fabric, then decided what pattern I was going to use. I sleep under that quilt every night and still just love it. So that one was because of color.
This last one that I am working on, came about because I have always wanted a yo yo quilt but just didn't think I had it in me to make one of those wonderful ones where yo yo's are stitched to each other. I saw the magazine cover and after reading how easy it would be, I made that one. Don't have a plan of what to do with it, just making because I can!!!

I rarely make a quilt just because. I almost always have a reason/recipient in mind when it's a purchase/plan of my own.

I did get some finished blocks from an estate sale a few years back, though, and those are slowly getting put together in quilts. These turn out to be charity quilts since they don't 'feel' like my work and I don't like to give them as gifts.

"I am looking for one specific fabric color and when I find it, I'll be off and running again" You know, that stopped me dead on a project I was going to do about three years ago. I sprung for some very expensive authentic Japanese material, and started gathering the complimenting material with which to make the blocks. I got the black, I got the red, and I had decided to use teal as the last and I could NOT find a true and appropriate teal blue. I got a teal green and it just does not do it for me. Have since used the black, red and teal green in other projects, lol. Still have the big cut of the Japanese print sitting in my stash waiting to be done. Had forgotten how I never could find a good partner for teal in my wardrobe. You'd have thought I would learn my lesson then. But it's funny how you look for the perfect material and will know when you find it. Sort of a sixth sense.

Broadcloth can be pure cotton. I've used it for things like kid's play clothes and always got 100% cotton broadcloth. Broadcloth can also be poly/cotton mix or even wool! I used 100% cotton broadcloth in a quilt I made and really wasn't thrilled in the outcome either, but I think it is because it has a different 'hand' to it than quilter's cotton and I didn't like the way the two came together. Had I used ALL broadcloth, I may have liked it. I really would HATE to confine my quiltmaking to only 'quilters' cotton. I have some cuts of exquisite raw silk my mother brought back with us from Japan. It is earmarked for a special quilt. If you can even find it at your fabric stores, look at the price tag. I'm not 'getting rid of my junk, or where I can't afford to use something nice'. Ditto the yards of 100% wool I've also set back for a heavy quilt. Last I saw, it's running upwards of $26 a yard. I also am planning a quilt using courduroy, because I want one with textural interest. I have my deceased father's flannel shirts I am saving for a quilted flannel throw. I shall feel like every time I put it over my shoulders......he is hugging me once again. I also have saved his neckties for a quilted silk wallhanging. Yes, I've made jeans quilts too and my g'son loves his and it's never off his bed. I actually understand what some of you are saying about a pure cotton quilt and the feel and look it has. I can appreciate it as well. But, I qualify that statement by saying I appreciate it for what it is and that speaks to it's a modern interpretation of what a quilt has to be by today's standards. I have a quilt section with the date 1918 embroided in hanging on my sewing room wall. I absolutely promise you the materials range from gabardines, to silks, to shirtings, to wools and speaks volumes of an era frozen in time. To me that exempflifies a folk art.

magothyrivergirl, I am right with you on the HE washing machines. I have one and don't like it a bit. However, mine is s top loading machine, but still very little water used in the washing. I think things need to be in more water than that to come clean and it must stress the fabrics more to be washed in that little water... plus I find stains are a lot harder to get out. No stains on my quilts, but I sure find it hard to get them out on clothes, even with spot remover, etc. I hope by the time we have to replace this machine, they will still be making some of the older style machines that fill the tub with water. I machine wash my quilts that I have made. Vintage/antiques are either packed away or just for display and I do as little as possible to them to try to maintain them for as long as possible. I shake them out now and then and fold in a different area and hope for the best. Jeanne

Sorry, I just realized I didn't answer the question. Guess I was too busy looking at the quilts. No, I don't make one pattern over and over. Actually, I don't believe I've ever used the same pattern twice. Although I get ideas and inspiration from quilts I've seen, I rarely use a pattern. Usually I'm making it up as I go. (Which explains why some of my quilts turn out so... odd.) Kate

I usually have someone in mind before I start a quilt because the process takes me so long to complete. I know some people think it doesn't take long to"whip out" a quilt. I would love to make a quilt because I saw the pattern or because I want to make a quilt a certain color. Maybe someday I will get to that stage. Right now I enjoy making quilts for others.

At this time of my life, I'm just playing with patterns and trying to get some UFO's finished. If a need comes up for a quilt and a UFO doesn't fit the bill, then I'll make one with that person in mind. Sometimes a person will come to mind as I'm putting fabric together. Right now, I'm working on 3 that were designated after I started them and 2 that was started with that person in mind.

I beleive that I am in the same boat as Sharon.

I always have something in the works, just because I like the pattern or have fabric that I just want to do something with, just for the enjoyment of the process.

In the last few years most of the quilts I make are just to enjoy the process, the challenge, and the creative outlet. I let them sit around finished until I find someone I want to give them to.

Mostly I just start. I love picking fabrics and patterns! Usually someone or something pops up that requires a quilt and that's what inspires me to finish the thing.

I do both. When there is an occasion to make one for someone I do but not on impulse. I often make one because I want to try a new technique or see a pattern that intrigues me. If someone admires it or needs it I pass it on. I play with different ideas, thus the UFO's.
