This pattern is referred to as Dragonfly, for obvious reasons. I looked in my book "Tiffany - Color and Light" to compare an illuminated lampshade with your shade. It appears to follow the original very closely in the placement of the oval cabochon-shaped pieces placed in the pinky glass area. Is it a Tiffany? I don't think so. Tiffany glass pieces usually have more variations in the glass. For example, the green glass above the pinky glass would have more colors of green and brown in each cut piece. On the other hand.....and without seeing the original base....who knows... One can purchase very close patterns of some Tiffany pieces and fabricate a shade. The dragonfly is available also as a 'fitting'. There are a lot of cheap imports available that vary in following the original depending on the price. There are numerous shades of this design on e-bay. One that appears to be the same as yours is about $125.00 You are the one to decide how much you want to put into the garden. One thought....as a glass lover, the beauty of this lamp is only truly shown when there is a light source inside the shade. I would encourage you to put some kind of light inside if it goes into the garden, and that would be stunning!! Barbara

Mitchdezj, thank you. I thought maybe you didn't want me to post here any more, so I'm glad to learn that's not the case. Those shades really are works of art, but I know they're not to everybody's taste. Shees, you can get crystals on eBay. Perhaps in lamp shops too? The lampshade you have is cute, but it isn't quite right -- a bit small/short for your lamp. Did you look at the lampshades on eBay? If you know how to hem a skirt (by hand) then you can sew a lampshade. It's the same kind of stitch. Basically, you wrap the wire frame in a special cloth tape. Then you stretch one panel of lining very tightly across it, pinning it to the tape (generally they're done one panel at a time). Pin points face inward, toward the center of the panel. Then you hand sew it on with stitches about 1/4" long, knotting every 4 stitches or so, and pulling the fabric tightly as you go. Then trim the lining fabric as close to your stitching as you can get, without cutting your stitching. Continue doing that until all panels are covered. The tricky part is not getting stabbed too much on all those pins. Try not to bleed on your shade. lol! I think rubbing alcohol will remove it if you do. First round is your lining fabric, usually white silk. Second round is your decorative fabric(s), quite often also silk, or velvet. (In picking your fabric, hold it up and see how it looks with light shining through it.) Sometimes you want to add a third layer of lace, or pleated nylon, or appliques, or whatever. Then you hot glue on the fringe, then the braid. The job takes a little time and patience. It's a good "in front of the TV" project. Of course, you can make either a modern shade or an antique one the same way. The quicky way is stretch it tight and glue it, one panel at a time.

What pretty lamps. Too bad the shades don't match your decor. They are gorgeous. Personally I'd take the lamp with me to the stores to make sure it looks and fits right. Shades are such an important part of the whole lamp look and I think part of the charm of this pairing in the crewel work. Do you have a lampshop in town that not only sells lighting but does repair work? They usuaully have the most variety of unique shades to choose from. With a budget of $40.00 per shade you shouldn't have any trouble at all finding something just right. You could buy online to if you can find one the same dimensions as this one? Does it have a harp and finial? I don't see one, but it could just be the angle you took the photo. Or is it the type that fits over the socket? Sorry I can't recall the name of that type of shade.

Hey you all--thanks for your sympathetic thoughts :) We have been over putting in unpaid time at a catsitting "client" of DD's, a beautiful tortie girl who is living in a really SAD situation and we're trying to give her as much love as we can while she's in DD's charge...long story but I'm CHILLED now and trying to warm up with some chai while I type to you :) Anyway, you're all confirming what I was pretty much thinking, both ways...that round cylinder or drum shades are probably how they were intended, and you know what, I think I'll be going with the cylinder anyway because I like the way the main lines of the linen are oriented -- horizontally -- on the cylinder as opposed to vertically on the oval. Now if I could find an oval with horizontal lines on the shade, I'd have a problem :) but so far no go. So it will be matching round (11") horizontally-oriented linen. The fabric made the decision! And amy, I've been thinking that I really should take pics of the paint job now that it's pretty much done -- but I realized that I didn't take any before pics -- there may be some hanging around, but they may have people in them and I'm not sure I want to post those -- WHY didn't I take before pics??! Because the change is really just huge, from the first-generation Devine drab depressing look to the beautiful but not overexcited overlapping flow of BM Brandon Beige, Pleasant Valley, and Richmond Gray (including one wall of Great Northwest Gray, as I call my personal mix of BB and RG :) -- it really does work, it's not completely muddy, although that would certainly fit the name :)) to a peek of Titanium in the hallway to the Master suite. We have flow and atmosphere now, vs. stop-dead Dried Blood and Dead Skin up on the walls. The matte I'm now completely o.k. with, too -- it really does minimize the horrible sprayed crud they put on the walls out here. But you all can't appreciate it for the change, and maybe it wouldn't come across as wonderful as it does to us...and we're SO not done yet, have to finish stripping the stair rail and waxing/repainting it, finish doing the popcorn and repaint the ceilings...so much...and um, amy, I would actually think that maybe *you* might be close to a photo-share, yourself...?
