White or silk white, whatever best compliments the color of the center section of the lamp. A rounded shade, to compliment all the curves of the filigree, etc on the lamp.

I think the idea of greenery there is nice, but the topiary piece is too small, especially now that the lamp is so large. I would look for a pretty fern to put in a nice brass container.

I assume you are getting rid of the cut glass vase and letting the lamp be the only thing there.

Les - I agree the plant looks a little off. I like the fern idea.

After I saw a shade on the lamp I do plan on removing the cut glass vase. All of a sudden it was too much.

I'm also a more is more girl and I love your lamp. I think you've found a beauty. The scrolls and prisms are so pretty and I like the shape of the glass. Can't wait to see what you ultimately come up with shade-wise.

shee, I like the lamp, but I think it's too much with the mirror. I don't think you can really see the detail of the lamp because of the mirror. I also think the lamp is the wrong scale for the mirror. Sorry, I hate when I have to go against your plans for something because I know how much time and effort you put into your decorating decisions so please feel free to ignore what I said. LOL You won't hurt my feelings.

I don't think I would do the box pleat - feels too tailored compared to all the curves in the lamp. I could see something like this:

A simple off white shade; I have to agree with brutuses, the lamp will be taller than the mirror with a shade, competing against each other and I think the lamp will win.

Do you have a lighting store nearby? Not a big box store, but one that sells lighting as their main product. I have 2 near me in Maine and those folks are experts at putting the perfect shade with a lamp. You'd need to bring it with you of course, but they'd steer you in the right direction without question.

I also feel (sorry) that the lamp and the mirror compete with each other. The lamp may look better against a wall where it can be appreciated on its own.

The lamp is very pretty, but I have to agree that it does not work well with the mirror. They are both so ornate that they fight to be the focal point.

I think a simple curved shade would let the lamp stand on it's on merits and not compete. Maybe something like this:

Ok I bought an off white shade today just to see.

It's too small and I don't believe the right shape. I measured the harp and tried to go by that but that must not always work. What do you think of the color?

shee, you can really see how pretty the lamp is on the marble table, but I'm afraid that table top is a bit small. At least to me it looks dangerous, lol, like it could get knocked down easily. I mention this as I remember that you have 2 cats, one being an active kitten, am I right? I had a lamp similar to that in style many years ago that suffered its' demise thanks to my cats.

I think the lamp looks equally as nice on the table by the window. With a larger shade it will be great.

Bru - Yeah, I have three cats actually. Gizzy is 6 months now. I will say that my cats for the most part don't mess with anything. The marble table and lamp are both very heavy and I don't think it would be a problem being messed with or knocked over. But you still think it looks too small on there? What if the lamp were the only thing on the table? (look at me trying to find a way for it to work!) If i were to move it to the round table by the window I'm assuming I shouldn't have the gold lamp on the marble table for size reasons also?

I'd go for a color with that lamp, probably a nice burgundy (like the throw on the chair). It's very pretty and I like it there in the LR.

Myself I'm not totally sold on any of the shades..i think it is a lamp that takes a really special touch..nothing garish but something special enough for the lamp..i'm thinking with the glass on the lamp that maybe some glass beads hanging from the shade might tie the shade into the lamp..???? Your white shade is a little short, as it should come about another 1/2 " down the candle part of the lamp, and the whites don't match, it is a bit greyer than the white of the lamp base..otherwise it would be fine..i think maybe a more yellowed white and some glass or crystal trim would really set it off and add the sparkle it needs..nothing garish though..hope this helps

Golly girl you have some well behaved cats. When mine were younger they'd get a freight train going through here and anything in their path went flying!! I still have a couple of young ones and things are still not safe. LOL The reaon I have no decor unless it's locked behind a cabinet door or a cheap lamp they can't hurt.

I do think the lamp will prove to be too big for that table although, like you, I sure do like them together. Let's see what others who know more about such things have to say.

Oceanna - Several thousand dollars?! Ouchie. Were they on sale for cheap on ebay. I do like those type of shades but usually can't afford them. Actually I have a dale tiffany shade I bought a thrift store for $8.00 I'm going to dig out. I'm sure it's not going to look right and won't work in the LR but I'm curious now!

Shee, yes, from Caid -- and she fixes up lamps and sells them together. Her stuff sells from about $3K+ to $14K+ -- so what I was showing you there wasn't Shriner's hats as Mitchdezj seems to think - lol!

You can't even get onto Kathleen's web site any more without invitation, and I think you have to have bought from her to get that invite. Her stuff is magnificent. She ombre dyes silk, and trims her shades out with the most incredible appliques, antique silk flowers, pieces of flapper dresses, metallic lace, metallic gimp and so on. VERY posh stuff. Plus her bead fringes do not look stock... I suspect each is designed and made just for the shade it's on.

The ones on eBay I pictured are from the Plain Jane shop and are closer to the $200 range. I bought one from her and the quality is excellent (but still it was a big splurge for me because I know I can make them).

The ones after the eBay ones and before Kathleen's are from around and about on the web -- various makers.

You can make the shades for yourself if you're handy with your hands. You can buy everything you need online. The proper way to make them is to sew them. The fabric must be pulled very tight. There are videos you can buy on how to make them. A cop out that still works is to use a hot glue gun instead, if you're in a big rush and aren't trying to create an heirloom. I've done it both ways.

I made some years ago with my hot glue gun and just lining material and lace that held up for years. I used to put them in the bathtub and spray them down with the shower head to wash them. lol!

If you have the patience and magnifying glasses and a good Ott light (that's what I need anyway), you can even make your own bead fringe.

Christine Kilger also makes magnificent shades, if you're looking for inspiration. A couple of those I posted I think were hers. She also sells the lamps with hers and again we're talking in the thousands.

I have long enjoyed this gal's work as well. Her prices are more reasonable than the other two, more around $400-$800, but the best prices for pretty I've found are the Plain Jane shop on eBay. This gal also recently started selling on eBay. Her hubby makes the frames and will sell them to you, and she also carries some neat fringe.

Anyway, YES you can most likely afford to do a magnificent shade for that lamp. Buy a wire frame, look in the remnant bin at your local fabric shop, and do it yourself for very little. Or, there are even lampshade making kits for sale. If you need help finding anything, just holler.

If you don't feel this is the right base for your Dale Tiffany (they are newer, not antiques), you can likely find a base you like for it online, if not in your local hardware store. Got a picture of it?

I hope that from what I posted you got some feel for color. I also think the last few I posted looked better because they hung down lower, but that's just my opinion.

I love the lamp and I love the shade Les had in her link that I feel would look great with the unique and beautiful lamp.

Lynn - I like the shade Les posted as well but all admit I'm cringing at $100 for a lamp shade right now. I just ordered a black shade for the other brass lamp a couple days ago. I'm going to search the area for some lamp stores. There has to be at least one! When it comes down to it if I can't find anything that works I'll bite the bullet and pay what I need to.

Shees, you can get crystals on eBay. Perhaps in lamp shops too? The lampshade you have is cute, but it isn't quite right -- a bit small/short for your lamp.

Did you look at the lampshades on eBay?

If you know how to hem a skirt (by hand) then you can sew a lampshade. It's the same kind of stitch. Basically, you wrap the wire frame in a special cloth tape. Then you stretch one panel of lining very tightly across it, pinning it to the tape (generally they're done one panel at a time). Pin points face inward, toward the center of the panel. Then you hand sew it on with stitches about 1/4" long, knotting every 4 stitches or so, and pulling the fabric tightly as you go. Then trim the lining fabric as close to your stitching as you can get, without cutting your stitching. Continue doing that until all panels are covered.

The tricky part is not getting stabbed too much on all those pins. Try not to bleed on your shade. lol! I think rubbing alcohol will remove it if you do.

First round is your lining fabric, usually white silk. Second round is your decorative fabric(s), quite often also silk, or velvet. (In picking your fabric, hold it up and see how it looks with light shining through it.) Sometimes you want to add a third layer of lace, or pleated nylon, or appliques, or whatever.

Then you hot glue on the fringe, then the braid. The job takes a little time and patience. It's a good "in front of the TV" project. Of course, you can make either a modern shade or an antique one the same way.

The quicky way is stretch it tight and glue it, one panel at a time.

Oceanna - I've never hemmed a skirt but I have two pairs of pants that I need to do. Never did that either but have an idea. Can't be that hard. Thank you for taking the time to explain the directions. It sounds harder than what I'm sure it is? Glue sounds better/easier to me. :) I looked on ebay a little last night but didn't see anything that really caught my eye. I'm a little nervous now to order a shade off the net since I ordered that black one for the LR and it's not quite right. I can send it back but of course have to pay the shipping and it's a hassle. I guess we'll see after I change the harp out.

Something like this would look nice. Picks up on the base shape and details. In a lighter color though. I wouldn't perch the shade too high. I think it would look better to have it sit lower with the fringe covering some of the scrolling iron.

Tdg - Oooh I like that shade! What do you think about maybe a brown/bronze color? I think it's going to be next to impossible to match the off white color.

I wouldn't do the same color as the base. Picking up a warmer tone would be nice. The one above is a bit too dark, I think.
