Giallo Ornamental Grnite & White Subway Tile Backsplash?

Hi. We had our giallo ornamental granite installed last week. I love the granite and want to choose a simple backsplash that does not detract from the granite. I've always loved the look of subway tile. Do you think white subway tile will look good with GO? We have white appliances and a white sink. Has anyone used this combination? I'd love to see any pictures out there. Thanks!

What color are your cabinets? Pure white might be too stark.

We have GO with golden oak cabinets and have chosen a kind of tan/cream marble subway tile. It's not installed yet, but someone did a mockup for me of how it might look. The granite does not look as gold as it does in this picture -- it is more gray or off white.

We have GO granite and installed a light tan color backsplash with a mural above the cooktop. The tan color was one of the colors in our granite. The background of our granite is cream not white and we have SS appliances. Because you already have white in your kitchen with your appliances the white subway tile should look good.

We "refreshed" our kitchen so it will be more appealing for resale. We have Giallo Napolean which I think is similar. We did a tumbled vanilla marble in 4"x4" tiles and randomly inserted a mosaic of pineapple onyx that we cut from sheets of 1"x1" mosaic. I think it really came out nicely. Unfortunately, I don't' have a picture of the backsplash, but I do have a picture that show all the materials together + our Silky Terrier (I was trying to show someone what a quarter bevel looks like - we love it). I also have a picture showing how we mocked it up while we were still at the tile store. We were toying with using a 4"x4" onyx tile, but thought the mosaic looked better.

We just went through this decision with the same granite. We chose a marble subway tile that has mostly cream, gold, tan -- didn't want anything too busy between the granite and our oak cabinets. Someone on the decorating forum very kindly did a mockup for me -- scroll through the linked thread to see it. We'll be getting it installed sometime this or next week. I know, I sound lazy. I'm actually a whiz with spackle and repairing holes, (DH has been amazed) but I'm a little worn out after all the DIY for the countertops and a bathroom that isn't part of this project. In spite of my statement about tile, it was mainly the ceramics that didn't suit my style. I am intrigued by the sheet tiles. But the only blue-ish color I see on their site is Nordic Sky which looks gray. Do they make a blue similar to this one? The cost might not be too much of a factor since we only have about 17 sq ft to cover. If they don't make a suitable color, we might think about some other brand of large glass tile. DH painted another piece of plexiglass with the blue paint just on one side and we put it up with the glass side out to get the effect. We both kind of like it if we can minimize the busy-factor and grout. Or, I might rest up and attack the wall with spackle and paint. LOL Thanks for all the suggestions.

mcmd - thanks for your response. It's beautiful! organic_nettie - no other photos worth posting right now -- we're very much in a state flux! I would have chosen the same look even if we were staying. I'm enjoying the fairly neutral background. I think that I, or the next owners, will enjoy making occasional changes to accent pieces to change the look from time to time. The colors that are in this granite are cream, black, gold and several shades of brown, with lesser amounts of orange/rust and taupe. The "jewels" in it are some iridescent specks of white that remind me of mother-of-pearl, some grey-green shiny spots, and some burgundy garnets. Sounds like a lot of colors, but the overall look is a warm light cream-brown. Gold would certainly work as a wall color. I'm pretty sure that when we move, we'll do something similar to this. (What we have: white raised-panel cabinets; ORB cabinet knobs and matching hinges (to come); black conduction cooktop & appliances; black Silgranit sink; Price Pfister tuscan bronze Marielle faucet & black reverse osmosis faucet; refinished white oak hardwoods (StreetShoe water-based finish, to come). So far, we're liking it. perqqderqq - you're right, in this photo it looks as though the grain points directly at the backsplash, but there is really an overall diagonal flow. I do like the color variation for the backsplash, so I'm not considering any inserts. I'm hoping that we'll be able to work with the tile installer and end up with a pretty good color distribution.

Our cabinets are painted wood - they are sort of a tannish white (Benjamin Moore Elmira White).

harriethomeowner - that's funny you say that about your granite looking gold in pictures. I took pics last night and the granite looks SO gold but not at all in person.

roseabbey - I am considering biscuit subway tile as well but am worried it's too close to the cabinet color.

I would be curious to see that as well.

We also want to do a white subway tile backsplash - just not sure how it would look either. We are going to have white cabinets, stainless appliances and the granites we like are New Venetian Gold, Santa Ceceila Light and Giallo Ornamental. I think the Giallo Ornamental might be too gold for the look we want. Its hard to tell in photos though, I guess we won't know until we are ready to start granite shopping.

Sorry to hijack - harriethomeowner - too funny! I'm scrolling and I think "oh, neat. that's the same splash as mine. wait a minute. that IS my backsplash!" LOL! I am laughing that I can recognize the pattern of tiles. :)

I was glad to read it's a mock-up and I'm not going THAT crazy yet. The section that was used for the mock-up has a little higher proportion of blue in it than it should (even though I was mixing the lots like crazy). It will look great with your granite!

nik211 - the Giallo Ornamental should be the least gold of the 3 granites you mentioned. If we go with the white subway tile, I'll try to remember to post a picture for you.

smilingjudy -- it is the same granite as yours (and in fact, your kitchen was my inspiration to use it!), but I think the person who did the PS version took my picture of the tile laid out on the counter in a brick pattern and turned it into what you see above. This picture actually shows the color of the GO better:

I like the blue/green ones -- there are colors like that in the granite.

Biscuit might be good. Even if it the same colour as your cabinets it would be a different texture and that in itself would be nice and it will make the granite the show piece in your ktichen if that is what you want. In our kitchen we picked the tan colour to blend more with the granite because we wanted our custom cherry cabinets to be the main feature in the kitchen. One thing in the kitchen should stand out while the other features should be more quiet imo.

Thanks amw - it's so hard to see the true colors of the granite in photos. I can't wait until we are ready to start shopping - I have awhile though :(
