My vista auto updates now shows the KB977165 unchecked in the list of autoupdates to install after a reinstall of vista. It also showed KB968389 unchecked - I went ahead and installed that one, but not the 977165. All other 'auto updates' are or were checked to install - which install with the time of day install settings, or manually. Before I restored vista with the 977165 installed it would try to start windows then reboot to automatic StartUpRepair which would find an ACL change and repair it on windows\system32\KGyGaAvL.sys .. then fail windows start up again over and over. StartUp Repair would again do its thing and say couldnt start because of configuration changes. Another attempt would say a Patch was keeping windows from starting. I kept increasing the reserved size of avail win restore space to not lose an old one that worked to get me into win - But would only get me in with limited off/on lan/internet connection to the router both wifi and wired nic. Pita. But wow.. so far I'm 17GB lighter on the hard drive with my basic most used programs. And I dont have that file with the ACL error... I'll have to spend time trying to figure out where it came from and avoid installing that program for a while hopefully. And wait a while for the offending update to be updated before installing 977165 You can tell I'm bored and writing too much but maybe someone will benefit or be wiser than I.

I know when I was shopping for a computer in Jan. the best prices and biggest hard drives were for 64 bit. It seemed you got more for your money going 64-bit. After checking, I found out that the software I use for work would not work with 64 bit systems. I needed my computers to work well together and didn't want to chance mixing 32 bit with 64. I later learned from a couple of people who bought 64 and couldn't get some of their software to work and continued using their old computers for certain things. At first it was blamed on Vista, but later determined it had to do with 64 bit. My guess is that people who are good with computers can work through these problems and get their machines to run smoothly, but for the average computer person, it is too difficult. I guess it is the wave of the future, but I don't think the software people are spending a lot of time on it. Also, there are some hardware issues with printers and scanners. You need to check carefully before updating. Personally, I don't want computers which give me a hassle. I bought two new machines last year with XP. I want machines to 'just work.' Jane

the reason for the continuous updates are for security purposes, as they find methods of possible vulnerability to the OS they will put out patches for you to update the system with, if you choose not to do them then it is possible that your pc could fall prey to the vulnerability that the patch was put out to fix. Much like when you buy a car and they later have a recall on an item they find has a defect they send you a notice to have the car brought in for the repair so you do not fall victim to what ever it is the recall was for. Nothing it seems is perfect and the OS is far from perfect and the bad guys are constantly looking for new holes and methods to gain access to our computers to use them for nefarious purposes, hence the constant need to do security updates, not only on the OS however but on all programs that are on your pc, it is wise to use the Secunia tool which will scan the pc and inform you of many needed updates to the programs on your pc. We all have to be very vigilant in keeping all of our software programs updated. Secunia Online Software Inspector Even if you buy a brand new pc it will immediately need several updates, Microsoft puts out security updates every month generally so since the pc was built till the day you plug it in all those that have been accumulating will need to be installed. IE7 is coming standard with new pcs because it is the latest version of IE and is more secure than IE6, however you can still get IE6 it is available. If your pc has sp3 on it then no you will not be able to remove IE7 that was one of the specific instructions given when sp3 came out that if you had IE 7 on your pc you need to remove it, install sp3, then re-install IE7 or those options would not be available. Personally firefox is a much better browser and I would suggest trying it, it is a good idea to have at least one other browser on the pc should the need arise. this link may be helpful to you. running multiple versions of Internet Explorer at the same time.
