Yeah it sure is, and I found it out of desperation. It saved me a lot of work. The whole process took maybe 15mins.

I was sitting here DL'ing them when I read this so I stopped them to where I have a red X on my shield now.
How do I get the dl'ing off?
They would otherwise automatically install after the finish of DownLoad when I shut down the computer.

What is my next step as I do not understand how to repair etc. using a CD as I did not get one with my computer.
I did do what was called the creating recovery media disc back in 04 but don't know if it is ok, if I did it right?
I just set it aside crossing my fingers I won't ever have to use it.

I am working on a machine with XP. I looked and that update installed on the 10th. I haven't experienced a blue screen. Should I be relieved? After all my other problems, that would be all I need! If it was going to happen, would it have already?

KB977165 installed on my HP AMD processor running XP SP3 with no problem at all. I have been using it since the update on Tuesday without a glitch. So, is this specific to certain machines, or is there a conflict with some program or what? I just read that MS has pulled that particular update.

They don't know as of yet why some machines have been affected and some have not.

Do you have the link you read about MS has pulled that particular update.

I got this on my Dimension E520 and the computer will not boot. I didn't get the BSOD (exact error I'm seeing in some of the links) until I tried to get into Recovery Console by booting off of the XP disk. I am really relieved that it's just an update issue. I thought the motherboard was fried and I thought that it was because of a boot-sector virus. This is good news for me.

from what I had read as of last night when you go to MS updates manually that update is no longer checked by default to install.
The randomness of the problem is very perplexing why it hit some and not others has not fully been uncovered yet.

If you have it on your pc and you have no blue screen problem then you are ok just leave it be you were one of the lucky ones.

urlee I would go to windows update manually and select custom and then just pick the ones to install if you can do that.

I have a Dell 8300, Windows XP SP3, IE7, and get automatic MS updates. I got this one with no problem but have been reading about this and shuddering for several days. Do you think I should delete this particular update?

And BTW, I got 10, not 13, updates the other night. Others have reported 13. Either way, I don't ever remember so many.

I think if your not having an issue leave it. That's my best answer.

This is a prime example of why computers should not be on "automatic update". They should be setup to "notify but not install". Thereby, one has the opportunity of choosing what updates to install and those to leave alone as in this case.

I never allow automatic updates and this is the third time I installed XP SP 3 as well as the other critical updates. I had a free day and decided to update Windows.

It's hard to know what to allow anymore.

Remember they weren't all O/S updates (patches). There was Rootkit, Malicious Software and Defender updates (dat files) amongst those updates.

I do question the timing of MS release sometimes. Why the dat files HAD to be released at the same time as the patches is beyond me. All it does is cause confusion and concern for users.

I am beginning to think we shouldn't download any updates and from now on I will wait a week or two to see if others have problems before I update. I don't do auto updates.

Well, there you go. If I didn't have automatic updates, I would have read the message that that update was a necessary security patch and installed it. How is anyone supposed to know?

The only time I had a problem with automatic updates was a few yrs ago and an MS update conflicted with Zone Alarm, causing huge problems for many thousands of users. Thanks to you all, I was able to uninstall the security update til MS, without ever acknowledging fault, eventually got their act together to fix the problem.

If you have the knowledge and skills, as so many of you here do, you can skip automatic. But for the great unwashed like me, I am stuck with trusting them.

If you are concerned about missing an update, how about configuring Windows Update to "ask first before installing?" This would provide you notification of an update's existence, allow you to view the explanation of the update before installing, and give you the privilege of refusal.

Personally I never allow automatic updates I have mine set to notify me only not download or install. I never install updates with out checking all of the security forums first where they always do a thread for them and see if any postings are showing problems. I wait usually a week before installing if I see no problems showing up in the forums.
However if it is an out of band update which means it is extremely critical and needed right away then I will do those.
As soon as I know there is a bad update I try to post warnings here and other sites to let people know but sometimes by then it is too late for those with auto update.

This one is very strange as to why it is hitting some and not others that seem to be very similar in configuration. I really feel for those that only have one pc and are now left wondering what the heck happened.
The really interesting part is that this update was to patch something that has been there for 17 years! They wait 17 years to patch then push it out only to cause such a mess.

Now there seems to be some speculation as to whether the affected ones contain some sort of malware, unknown to the owner. But no one even seems to be sure of that, either. Seems MS actually has people picking up some of these machines to study them, hoping to ascertain the exact cause. Can't fault them for doing that.

To continue the interesting thoughts, I have only read one report of a user claiming the concern after installing the update on a Vista system. Of course though the claim may be considered valid the cause cannot. Mine is just fine.

I am wondering if the removal of archaic XP and pre-XP code from Vista prior to release, remember all the complaints regarding inoperable software and peripherals, inoculated it.

Right now without knowing much else my gut feeling is a hardware or BIOS conflict is the culprit as the concern is not across the board uniformly.

As usual there are some forums showing Vista and Win7 having problems too.. just not as numerious.

And guess what, I'm one of the vista problems & I screwed myself. Now I have to burn burn burn docs,pics, favs, and special things, and reload vista. I ran MRT full scan... wow, that takes forever. Plus malwarebytes. Even messed up my internet connection and I cant reboot to fix that. Stuck forever online with random on/off networking.

Ummm, that reminds me I haven't done a back up in a while. It is past time.

That link was in my original post. However many have shown they had the bsod and no infection so there is still on going investigation of cause.

To further clarify about whether or not MS pulled that update they have released more info about that. What they have done is turn if off from coming through windows auto updates BUT if you go to MS updates site and have it scan your pc for updates it will still be presented to you and you do need to choose to include it or NOT. Here is part of that info from the blog.
we basically turned off the Automatic Update system

So if you go to MS updates you still need to look to see if that update is listed and if it is pre checked for install.

My vista auto updates now shows the KB977165 unchecked in the list of autoupdates to install after a reinstall of vista.
It also showed KB968389 unchecked - I went ahead and installed that one, but not the 977165.
All other 'auto updates' are or were checked to install - which install with the time of day install settings, or manually.

Before I restored vista with the 977165 installed it would try to start windows then reboot to automatic StartUpRepair which would find an ACL change and repair it on windows\system32\KGyGaAvL.sys .. then fail windows start up again over and over. StartUp Repair would again do its thing and say couldnt start because of configuration changes. Another attempt would say a Patch was keeping windows from starting.

I kept increasing the reserved size of avail win restore space to not lose an old one that worked to get me into win - But would only get me in with limited off/on lan/internet connection to the router both wifi and wired nic. Pita.

But wow.. so far I'm 17GB lighter on the hard drive with my basic most used programs. And I dont have that file with the ACL error... I'll have to spend time trying to figure out where it came from and avoid installing that program for a while hopefully. And wait a while for the offending update to be updated before installing 977165

You can tell I'm bored and writing too much but maybe someone will benefit or be wiser than I.

As I said, they started downloading before I saw your warning so I quickly stopped it (turn off) which put a red X on the shield meaning I have to put a dot to start it up.
Should I put the dot B4 "Download updates for me but let me choose when to install them" hoping what started DLing before I stopped it, won't continue on DLing KB977165?

In other words, will it continue where left off in automatically downloading ALL as I had already given permission to before I turned off the automatic updates?

PS:

They were just in the DL stage when I stopped it.
Not installed as that usually happens automatically when I shut down after the DL of them.

if you are worried you could just do a system restore to before you even started the download stage, finalize the system restore, then go back to exactly as you have shown in your picture and leave that one un checked and go ahead with the others.

Any one hear of a repair for this update or a revised version???? Been looking around recently and havent found anything. Adobe FP forum said they were still working on it last time I checked. Still leaving this thing unchecked in Updates til I hear different. It may or not cause me any grief on my Vista and Win7 machines as they are pretty clean but not taking the chance

Microsoft has decided on xp machines with a virus compromised kernal is the problem.. they don't seem to give much attention to the Vista/Win7 gottcha's yet...

Imagine the virus updates probably all have the particular virus in their updates starting about now.

I just posted about another MS update that has been causing BSOD on windows 7 machines it is a totally different update than this one so anyone with windows 7 you may want to check that post out if you are having a BSOD issue.
