Granny's Bowties

Several years ago as my grandmother was going into a nursing home for alzheimer's patients, we were going through her house dividing up all of the odds and ends. I found these bowtie blocks in a drawer and no one wanted them. I put them away and just recently decided to put them together. The thing that made me get them at the time was that one of them (the bright pink one) was a leftover from a quilt that she made me the first time I was married which was over 28 years ago. At the time we were dividing things up, I did not even quilt or own a sewing machine. The quilt is baby size so I will save it for my first grandchild if I ever have one. He or she will have a quilt made from blocks that his or her great great grandmother pieced. This is the first quilt that I quilted on my new longarm.

What a great quilt. That is just the kind I grew up with and probably why I love scrappy quilts so much. Be sure to write down the history and store it away with a picture of the quilt. Then the grand can add to it later.

Yeah, Michael really dropped the ball. Laura's collection was better than I was expecting--more variety with her look than I was led to believe. Uli's was fine I guess. Michael's? Some stuff kind of was pretty. I dunno. It was just a very disappointing experience. Don't know if I'll bother with next season. They're getting too close to jumping the shark. I hope Laura goes on to greater things or at least gets her stuff out there. Given an infinite amount of free time I'd like to go through the season and tally up the number of times people were criticized for making something that didn't look like "them" and the number of times they were criticized for making something that looked "predictable." But then I guess when you sign up for a "reality" show you're pretty much asking to be jerked around.

Thanks for those great ideas, Mariann and Vic! We always boil it, which is probably most convenient, as I usually do two dozen or more at a time. But, if we just want one or a few, the microwave way sounds so easy!! And we have talked about doing it on the grill too, but haven't, so I really appreciate the detailed instructions on that!! My kids will eat so much corn!! Lily, my three year old, eats 3 to 4 ears when we have it. And Dylan and William each ate about 7 ears Monday night, I think! We had some left after dinner, and after they did dishes, they asked if they could eat some more. I said, sure, eat as much as you want, just leave some for Dad when he gets home. They each sat down and ate 4-5 more (as they had only had 3 with supper.) You can believe they were both up in the bathroom FIRST THING the next morning!! : ) I froze about 35 lbs. of whole kernal corn over the last two days, and Dave is going to pick more tonight. He was going to last night, but realized I have to can beans and freeze a load of broccoli and cauliflower today, so I think he gave me a bit of a reprieve! Thank goodness! Thursday is market day, so I'll be baking until I go there, but I'll plan on freezing corn again on Friday! I DO love seeing all these things pile up in the freezer and on my pantry shelves, knowing how much food we are stocking for winter!!! Becki

Well, my eyes are doing better today, good enough that I was able to put in a full day at work, which was good! I got really bored yesterday just sitting around, listening to the television. I hope there'll be no more of that! Yesterday did have one bright spot though... I received Vina's box of fire, and boy-howdy, it sure is a hot one! Stella helped me look through it yesterday, telling me what was what when I couldn't make it out. She sure is helpful (nosey!) when she wants to be...lol! Vina made a huge card from construction paper and put in it pictures from her yard, a nice little letter, flames, and some ladybugs! Very nice! She also included a list of what's in the box, and a recipe for hot roasted corn dip, all covered in fake soot. Very clever, and very imaginative! For plants, Vina shared Devil's Riot Iris, Tahiti Daffodils, Fall Fiesta Iris, and Fires of Fuji Daylilies. If you aren't familiar with how any of these look, google them and be prepared to go get some. They're gonna be gorgeous next summer! Vina harvested some seeds from her garden for me too... Fanfare Gaillardia, Indian Summer Rudbeckia, and Cherries Jubilee Yarrow. These will all look great mixed in with the coneflowers on my perennial mound. Also in the box was a solar yard stake (which matches the ones I already have!), and a book on container gardening! I'll be looking through it for ideas for next summer all winter long! I was having the same ideas as Annie at the same time, and made a new recipe for Cinnamon Buns. It was a Cook's Country recipe, and I wanted to see what the difference cornstarch in the dough would make. I was very impressed, and the dough was beautiful, easy to make and roll out. Although these aren't my grandmother's cinnamon rolls, the recipe was actually less involved than those, and very good. We're still eating them, savoring them one at a time. I'll definitely make these again. Here's the recipe: Dough 3/4 cup whole milk, heated to 110 degrees 1 envelope (2 1/4 tsp.) instant or rapid-rise yeast 3 large eggs, room temperature 4 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup cornstarch 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 1/2 tsp, salt 12 Tbs. unsalted butter, cut into 12 pieces and softened Filling 1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar 1 1/2 Tbs. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. salt 4 Tbs. unsalted butter, softened Glaze 4 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 Tbs. whole milk 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups confectioner's sugar 1. For the dough: Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 200 degrees. When the oven reaches 200 degrees, shut off. Line 13-by-9-inch baking pan with foil, allowing excess foil to hang over pan edges. Grease foil and medium bowl. 2. Whisk milk and yeast in measuring cup until yeast dissolves, then whisk in eggs. In bowl of stand mixer fitted with dough hook, mix flour, cornstarch, sugar, and salt until combined. With mixer on low, add warm milk mixture in steady stream and mix until dough comes together, about 1 minute. Increase speed to medium, and add butter, one piece at a time, until incorporated. Continue to mix until dough is smooth and comes away from the sides of the bowl, about 10 minutes. Turn dough out onto clean surface and knead to form a smooth, round ball. Transfer dough to prepared bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and place in warm oven. Let rise until doubled in size, about 2 hours. 3. For the filling: Combine brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in small bowl. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface. Roll dough into 18-inch square, spread with butter, and sprinkle evenly with filling. Starting with the edge nearest you, roll dough into tight cylinder, pinch lightly to seal seam, and cut into 8 pieces. Transfer pieces, cut-side up, to prepared pan. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in warm spot until doubled in size. 4. For the glaze, and to bake: Heat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk cream cheese, milk, vanilla, and confectioner's sugar on medium bowl until smooth. Discard plastic wrap and bake buns until deep golden brown and filling is melted, 35 to 40 minutes. Transfer to wire rack and top buns with 1/2 cup glaze. Cool 30 minutes. Using foil overhang, lift buns from pan and top with remaining glaze. Serve. Make ahead: After transferring pieces to prepared pan in step 3, buns can be covered with plastic wrap and refrigerated for 24 hours. When ready to bake, let sit at room temperature for 1 hour. Remove plastic wrap and continue with step 4 as directed.

I think it is a great treasure too.
Just today I was thinking that I wish I had kept a quilt made by my mother for one of my children but it was so loved and dragged around that it 'died a natural death'.

What a great story! I know this is out of your comfort zone - mine too! I like your layout. How big are the original blocks? 1 bowtie per block?? The placement of the yellow-gold bowties and your choice for gold binding is perfect. Such a treasure! Great job!
This was a wonderful choice for your first to quilt on your frame-include that in the history as well.

Someday someone is going to look back at this history and see how (your) life and quilting has evolved and survived thru the generations.

Your grandchild will love it!

I do hope you will write the story (history) on a piece of fabric and then sew it to the back of the quilt. *You* know about the pink fabric, and the date and importance of it, but in ten or fifty years that info could easily be lost, and yet it would enhance the value to whoever is lucky enough to receive the quilt.

Jackie, How wonderful to be able to find these blocks, keep them and put them together. Great quilt! As the others have said, the story needs to be saved, too. You're doing your part in keeping a bit of your family history intact.

That's a treasure and I can only hope it continues to be passed alone. I agree scrappy is great especially when the fabrics hold memories. I am so happy that you gave your grandmother this gift by bring to life something she put together. A real tribute and I am sorry she isn't able to share it.

Jackie, I think it is fate that 'spoke' to you about putting the blocks aside, even though you were not a sewer/quilter!

Such an amazing gift to be handed down to future generations. It's a beautiful quilt, I love your layout and your quilting enhances the pattern perfectly.

The only hand made items we found of my beloved grandmother were the crochet items I had made for her. I was just beginning to crochet and she never used them.
