Whew!!! At least That's Over

Movers were supposed to be at the house between 8 and 8:30 this morning. I sort of expected them to be late (isn't everyone any more?) I'd figured on shutting the cats up each in a different closet (no--I'm not being cruel, my closets are about 4 X 8, and have windows--much better than being cooped up in a crate) at about 7:45 so they wouldn't be underfoot. Well, the moving truck pulled up before I even got to that!

They were amazing. Loaded up everything (very carefully) in about an hour. We pulled out before they did, and made excellant time getting to the country house--about 50 minutes, and they were sitting there waiting for us! Still don't know how they managed that!

Only took them about 45 minutes to unload and place everything exactly where I wanted it. They were great--hardworking, careful, fast, and relatively reasonable.

As far as I can see, we only had one casualty. My mother's secretary lost it's finial (again--it falls off every time it gets moved and DH glues it back) and a shelf inside pulled away. Both can be easily fixed. DH's Grandfather's clock was the thing I was worried about and it seems fine.

So now we're back at the 'old' house, ready to start a heavy-duty cleaning, and will be living with: a matress and box spring, couple of folding chairs, card table and a cooler for the next two weeks. Feel bad for the cats--they simply don't know what happened to their house this morning. Keep wandering around, looking displaced. Poor babies.

What a relief that must have been. Glad it all went well. I will be facing something similar in the next few months as my house is up for sale and I haven't moved in almost 40 years.

oh I love it when the whole moving mess is over and done with but it seems like it takes me for ever to get all the finishing stuff done. In fact I still have boxes that got shoved in the hall closets that I have no idea what is in them LOL. And the garage holds many secrets! Hopefully somewhere in there are some of my kitchen items that have gone missing. They got some of the kitchen stuff mixed up with the garage stuff somehow.

It is such a great feeling to know you had wonderful movers.
Our last movers were with out doubt the best we have ever had.

Hi and I should introduce myself... I pop in maybe once a year or so. I currently garden in the Houston area (zone 9) but have also lived in south Texas (9/10 depending on who asks.) I have a west-facing balcony over a parking lot, and my balcony temps generally top out at 103F *almost daily* from May to Sept. Talk about a heat island. I find that a big part of what lives and what dies is the size of the pot. Only succulents will live in 6 inches or smaller unless you're religious about watering (and sometimes even if you are!) and/or they get some shade. Ten inches and bigger does much better - a lucky accident, for me, that my $2 herbs lived but my $20 citrus trees survived. I have 2 citrus (meyer lemon, satsuma 'kimborough'), fig 'celeste,' pomegranate (p. compacta) which got a little toasty while we were away a week and lost most of its leaves but has buds for next year. Rose 'Pink Knockout,' which is buggy right now but keeps growing despite it. Basil in a 2-gallon did pretty well. I do like succulents... actually wish I could grow more because my balcony is half-shaded, so I don't have lots of full-sun space, and it's already full. So some other reccomendations: Bouganvilla. Loves it hot! My mom has these on her arid, toasty west patio. Caveat: they take a while to settle if you molest their roots, don't like really windy spots, and they're thorny. Sweet Potato vine. But it's very thirsty. Tradescantia 'purple heart.' Ok, so it's a big viney weed, but the color is gorgeous in full/partial sun: lightly fuzzy purple leaves with almost turquoise tones beneath. Kalanchoe blossifeldiana: okay, it's a succulent, but it has such great flowers. It *almost* looks like a normal plant. Lemongrass. that is, I'm sure it would do great, if my cats would just stop eating it. The praying mandids eat other bugs, not plants. Keep those guys around. Unglazed clay pots would have the advantage of cooling those roots a few degrees when water evaporates through the pores. obviously you need to water more often because of this. I use a chipped-wood mulch on my bigger pots. You're right, pebbles will probably just heat it up more. Now my biggest problem is finding plants that tolerate that heat *in the shade,* which is my last frontier. I got some wax begonias, a davalia fern, an anthurium and a fittonia to go out in the summer. The orchids can go out some of the time; I'm going to put some tubs of water under the shelves to raise humidity. I've got kind of zone confusion with the mediterranian/desert thing going on above the ledge and a woodsy-jungly thing below. But mostly... I don't want to think about it too much. It's been warm even now... I'm outside putting up with the dark laptop screen because it's actually *cool!* for once. BTW I love your screen name. But please tell me you don't *really* drown children! :)

Connie, you can buy pink insulation in rolls that are about 10" wide and just unwind it as you roll it around the pipes. This method takes longer then... Also there is insulation that comes in a long black tube with a slit up one side. Just open the tube and slip it over your heat tape and water pipe. Cut the tube in the lengths you need. You do have to make sure that all the water pipe is totally closed in or the slightest wind at an exposed area will freeze your pipe. Canadian Tire heat tapes can last as little as a few days to 10 years. Some people put two tapes on at the beginning and then when one goes they just plug the other one in. Some trailer courts used to require this to be done when the trailer moved in. Brenda

Lazygardens - I do actually live in California :) As far as the label goes, it's really faded and that's about as good as it gets. I took some more pictures. Lindac - It looks like plywood to me. I attached a picture. Also the cracking is intentional, in my opinion. It has definitely been taken care of poorly. Everyone who comes over seems to really like it, so I think it's still beautiful. I tend to favor modern (post-modern to be exact) furniture more, and am tempted to give it to someone who will take better care of it. This is a close up of the front. It actually feels like leather to me. Tried to take some more label pictures The back also has a strange crackly appearance to it, too. This is the back, and there's nails (I'm assuming from the decorative ones in the front) And this is why I think it's plywood

I had to do a google search to see what French Grape looks like. It is a deep red, which is one of the more difficult colors to right. You will need a tinted primer and at least two coats of paint. You will want to go over the walls carefully looking for paint drips to sand down and any holes to fill. Your bottom photo is upside down on my screen. You need to decide what color to paint that trim piece above the baseboard molding. I would paint it white to match the baseboard. Yes, you can just move your furniture to the center of the room.

Fran, that's exactly OUR situation. We've been in this house for over 39 years, and we're honestly sort of packrats. It's been and experience trying to organize and reduce the clutter.

I hope you have the good luck we did selling--found buyers rather quickly--who have been a dream to work with (so far--and just the walk-through and closing to go!). And may you find movers who are as good as ours!

Am sure you've done a lot of decluttering to list the house--I can only suggest continuing to do so, as enthusiastically as possible.

One thing I did this past weekend? I put post-it notes on EVERYthing. They were color-coded (pink for main floor, yellow for basement), and each stated the destination room at the new house. It really seemed to speed things along, I didn't have to direct anything much once we got to the new house. Of course, there was one little glitch with that, one of the movers was color-blind, but he said the colors I used were ones he could distinguish!

Wow! What a quick process. It usually takes the movers all day to load when I move. Unloading goes so much faster.

Unbelievably, I think my kitchen stuff has MULTIPLIED in the boxes. Seems to be much more than I started with--LOL!

I'm not going to get too crazy about unpacking until after we go to settlement in 2 weeks. For now, cleaning, and touching up paint and polyeurothane in the old house ought to keep me busy enough.

Well, honestly, Fun, we've had the country house for 4 years, so we've moved a LOT of stuff ourselves, and gotten rid of a lot more. But it was still a fair amount that they were moving--one bedroom, large heavy dining room set, kitchen set, cluttered living room, and half the garage stuff and a bunch more boxes, so yes, I was really impressed at their work ethic and speed. So much easier than putting the call out to all the friends with pickups--LOL!

Wow, happy to hear your move went so well! How good for y'all! We just moved 65 miles and then moved 1000 miles 3 months later. We've been renting for 6 months and looking to buy. Moving is traumatic no matter how smooth the actual move goes.We've moved 8 times, usually about 1000 miles. I can tell you horror stories. . . .

That is great it went so smoothly, Azzalea! What a relief that must be! Your idea for post-it notes is great. Cleaning & sprucing will now be easy with all the "stuff" out.

I haven't moved in 30 years... I can't imagine the drudge of our doing so. I would like to do so just to downsize & get rid of a ton of junque, before we get so old that it is next to impossible. But dh wouldn't consider it.

Glad it went well. I am determined NEVER to move. I have too much stuff to pack up plus I would never leave my perennial plants.

LOL--I laughingly advise everyone to move every 10 years, so the build-up isn't as bad!
As to the perennials--we've had the other house for 4 years now, so I actually had the time to move (or make cuttings of) a lot of stuff I wanted (my irises, lilies of the valley, white violets, pussy willows, horseradish, zoysia grass, my big rosemary bush, mint, all my bulbs, etc). I do want to see if I can do some cuttings from the scotch broom--never knew you could but an internet search seems to think it's possible--cant hurt to try! Some that were too big to move, I've already bought and planted 'replacements--concord grapes, raspberry bushes.

And it's been fun to plan and buy new varieties that I haven't had before--so far, I've added some heavenly bamboo, Japanese Holly. Getting my garden going is one of the great pleasures of this move.
