Found a new homemade cleaner

For some reason the carpet in front of the sink got a bunch of spots on it. Drove us both crazy. Decided to try to clean it last nite.

So I found a recipe that's a great stain-remover. It works on underarm stains and older stains in carpets and clothing.

1 part Dawn dishwashing liquid (blue) and 2 parts hydrogen peroxide.

I dipped my scrub brush in the solution and scrubbed the mat. We then rinsed it in the tub and hung it outside over the railing to dry. It looks great!

I have heard that it works well but never tried it. I use Dawn products all the time, always happy with them.
Good to know about this. I have a few problem areas to work on.

The junk left on the walls (and just about everything else) is tar from the smoker, not nicotine. Paint thinner does less damage to finishes than ammonia containing water formulas. Water is not a problem (except on shellac) but ammonia will darken wood if there are any defects in the finish. Paint thinner is flammable, and unless you pay for the deodorized stuff stinks, but it will not damage fioshes and leaves no significant residue behind.

My granite installer said to only use soap & water to clean my granite most of the time. For significant cleaning, he suggested I occasionally (not often) use this GranQuartz 3-in-1 cleaner (link at end). He said anything else *could* harm the granite finish or sealer. He especially warned against Windex or anything containing ammonia. So far, I've only used a slightly soapy sponge or scrubby sponge (the type I use for non-stick cookware) & it stays very clean. As with the alcohol and water, I'd seen "recipes" using varying # of drops of oil--I've been topping off my spray bottles before they are empty, so I add different am'ts. I think I tend to add somewhere around 10-15 give or take? I mostly go by smell--just enough to smell the lavendar, not so much that it's overpowering. I've just started using this concoction, so I've been playing around with proportions and in two very different size spray bottles; one very small and one much taller. I wish I could give a more definitive answer. Yes, regular isopropyl rubbing alcohol. I've been using the 70% strength (which is more commonly on the shelves), but have read a few "recipes" using 90%. I don't know if it matters or not.

Great find, although I cannot imagine a worse smell for laundry than lavender. I despise it!! I would take gag me Suavitel or Tide's sweet tart chemical scent over lavender :-O

I like to squirt a little Dawn on laundry stains, work it in with my knuckles until it disappears, add a dab more and leave it for 10-15 minutes before laundering it. It gets a lot of spots out.

Peroxide can also 'bleach ' some fabrics, so do a test first. I 've ruined some good towels with the stuff and now only use white bath linens in my bathroom.

Oh, you got me worried Rhizo. I went and checked my black and white top that I had put the cleaner on. I am planning to wash it in the next couple of days.

I rinsed it and the stain is gone and no bleaching. ~
So I put some on some tea towels now.

Years ago I used that stain remover recipe on old tea stains on my Grandma's linen tablecloths. I did it a few times and they disappeared.

I just used it on some garmets with underarm stains, and it works very well! I saw this recipe somewhere and it said to add just a little baking soda to make it a little gritty. I did that, and will use this concoction again next time. Good to know something so simple, will work.

I'm not sure what kinds of things that the peroxide will bleach; probably not everything.
