For size, look at Columns. SubZero makes some now, though I don't remember the sizes. The most popular columns are Thermador, which are right between mid and high range. The way columns work is you combine the size of the fridge box you want with the size of the freezer box. If you install them next to each other, you buy a thermal connector. Once they're trimmed out they look like one. Miele are the high end columns that use the same boxes as Thermador, but their own electronics and all. In the U.S. they're sometimes more expensive than SZ, but it might be different in Canada because SZ is made in the U.S. BSH is the German parent company of Bosch, Thermador and Gaggenau. They make Bosch and Gaggenau fridges at the same plant in Turkey (as well as the Miele boxes). I've heard that Bosch columns aren't sold anymore in the U.S., but you might have them there. They have a lower price point, so probably fewer features. Gaggenau have all stainless interiors and stainless shelves. If you want an industrial look, or you have a patient at home who makes sterilization of the fridge a priority, this could be an advantage. I think it's just expensive and grim looking. Anyway, for 48", you can pair a 30" fridge column, and 18" freezer. I wouldn't like a narrower fridge, but they also make a 24" if you really want the 42" total. Columns in general install fully integrated and flush. You can panel them in any way you like. Some also offer factory panels in stainless, or perhaps several finishes, if you'd rather.

Gary - no, the 700 series didn't doesn't have "gills" at all. It's systems are down in the bottom of the unit and are completely covered by cabinetry toekick and / or the bottom drawer panel. It was the first unit to be TOTALLY concealed ( no trim, no fins, no gaskets showing ) and is for the most part unchanged since it's rollout in the LATE 90's !!!! - which is its biggest drawback today.

Service for Sears' Kenmore products is through A&E, a joint venture between Sears and Whirlpool. A&E is the contract warranty servicer for other brands, as well. (GE signed an agreement with them a couple of years ago, for example. Electrolux and Samsung also have agreements with them in some regions, though they may allow alternatives, at times.) The quality of service from A&E has been variable with a pretty fair number of horror stories. There was a long running thread here on that topic and I've linked to it below in case you are interested in the history behind hvtech's opinion and my comments. That said, most folks who buy a Kenmore-labeled refrigerator product won't need service. Judging from the membership survey results published by Consumer Reports, it seems that 1 in 10 or 1 in 9 buyers of Kenmore refrigerator products have serious issues in the first five years of ownership, which is pretty much as good as it gets these days (unless you go for standard, non-icemaker top-freezer fridges which tend to be the most reliable with about 2/3 to 1/2 the defect rate of the SxS and bottom freezer models. CR used to report brand reliability on built-ins but apparently are not getting sufficient survey responses on those lines for what they regard as a statistically reliable sample. Thanks, lascatx. I had read one of your posts where you described taping the wall. Great idea. I have looked at the Thermador instructions a few times and am a little puzzled by the concept of "furniture return" because it looks like three pieces of not very wide board. I did finally find and download a much longer and more complete set of instructions from their website. Cabinet installer is suggesting a plywood end panel, but the last thing we want is for it to fall over and kill someone. Maybe appliance installer would have a better thought. Next step is to call Thermador. It would be so much easier if I could put even a narrow cabinet of some type at the end. I appreciate your advice. Don't have a KD because it is pretty straightforward cab replacement, except for this issue! Went from freestanding to built in. More to follow... thanks again.
