Tornado sirens went off last night

I had been watching the weather reports on TV all evening and knew that we were under tornado watch. I was very tired and finally went to bed. First my cell phone made a loud warning signal and then the tornado sirens went off. Cooper did not want to go to the basement but I finally got him and one of the 3 cats down there. We didn't even have strong winds in town.
This was at 11 p.m. A couple of my friends said today how tired they kids were this morning. Fortunately, the only damage I have heard of was at Lake Panorama where people have vacation homes and some live there year round. That is over an hour from my town.

Of course it's good to go to a safe place because tornadoes' paths are so unpredictable. Must be hard on kids who didn't sleep well and also on the teachers the next day dealing with fatigued kids. To say nothing of people who have to go to work. Glad you are safe.

We had some strong winds and rain here last night. Our electricity was off from midnight to 11 this morning. A large tree fell on the lines north of us. Many were with out electricity.

Hi Bill, You are correct. As long as you add a lot of organic matter like leaves, shavings from horse stalls, etc. on a regular basis, your plants should have all the nitrogen they need on a steady basis. I can only think of a couple of cases where you might have a lack of nitrogen availability. One would be if you added in a lot of sawdust or wood chips or shredded wood that has not decomposed and tilled it into the soil. In that case, the wood products could tie up your nitrogen as they decomposed. It is OK, though, to have those on the soil surface as mulch. I assume your horse stall shavings have urine or horse manure on them and those should add enough nitrogen to the shavings to keep them from tying up nitrogen as they break down, I think. Another instance would be if your soil were to be incredibly wet for a long period of time after the plants were in the ground. In that case, the water actually clogs up the roots and keeps them from taking up nitrogen from the soil. I have had that happen three times since moving here--during the April-May-June flood months in 2004 and the flood months of May-June 2007. Then, after we received over a foot of rain in April '09 the plants had the same issue, but only for about 5 or 6 weeks and then the soil dried out enough that growth resume. If you have that kind of waterlogging, you have to wait it out. Once the soil dries out, the plants can conduct proper nutrient uptake again. There can be a separate issue where nitrogen is available in the soil but some plants cannot take it up and use it while soil temperatures are low. That's usually a short-term situation in the early spring though. It is so dry where you are, Bill, that I don't know if you'd ever have enough rain there to prevent nitrogen uptake. So, pile those leaves on and let them decompose. Plow or rototill them into the soil if you want. They'll only help and not hurt. It is almost impossible in our part of the country to put too much organic matter into your soil, although Jay has been trying. (He still got great soil test results though!) Best of luck to you too! Cat Mom, I really liked the display too. The chef did about 3 minutes on SubZero and almost nothing on the gas ranges, but everything was there for fondling, measuring, getting the feel of size/looks. HPX, I'm with you on the ovens. They were really great. Plllog, I'm still figuring out the other attendees too! There were maybe 20 of us and I spoke in some depth to six people (I got nosy and was all "so when do you break ground on your renovation? What are you in the market for? Did anything you saw here tonight change your mind?") So sweeping generalizations from small sample size follow. The crowd skewed older - mid-50s and up, with four of us I'd peg for younger than that. I wouldn't recognize a designer outfit if it smacked me in the head, but based on the jewelry, handbags and plastic surgery I saw, this was an upper-middle-income-plus crowd. Of the six I spoke with, three people (one couple, one woman) were buying appliances for their second homes. One couple was proudly buying an entire Wolf/SZ suite of appliances, everything from microwave to outdoor grill, and the guy got a little testy when I asked what other brands he was looking at, as in "what else has this kind of name recognition?" And many of the participants treated this as a cooking class. Besides the from-scratch-cookies amazement and the salmon thing, they were quizzing the chef on the best pans to buy and how many minutes per pound to cook a Thanksgiving turkey. I got the impression that most people were looking at their purchases as status first, cooking capability a distant second. The ovens would be nice for the caterer to use, but the interest level dropped off significantly as the chef went into detail on the differences between bake, roast and convection bake. These were casual cooks at best.

Hopefully with the small amount of time you did sleep, it was enough to get the info they need. My SIL did the test and slept very little, but it was enough to see that she stopped breathing for several seconds. I'm sorry you are going through so much, but I'm glad you did the test. Fingers crossed all is well!

They tested our tornado sirens all over town today. They usually just test at 10 a.m. on the first Wednesday. Today this went on for hours. Poor Jake wanted to lie in from of the screen door and look out. When the sirens got loud he would howl and I would call him to me and put my hands over his ears. The crazy cats act like they don't even hear it.

I'm out in the country with nothing to stop the wind. I thought it was going to shake me out of bed! I fell asleep with Ch. 13 showing the radar. It was far enough south of me that I just watched it on TV. I was surprised this morning that I didn't have any damage. At least none I've found. I have my own ponds, though! The ground is so saturated and the tiles are full so the water just sits. Probably more rain tonight.

You must have a lot more moisture than we do! Our tile lines have not ran at all this spring!

We did get almost 2" in the the last two days though - YEA!

Do you guys follow "Iowa Storm Chasing Network" on Facebook - they have some great weather predictions and also live reports of storms. I think it is a couple young meteorology students from ISU.

How scary this must be for you all, and I'm glad everyone's ok. What are tiles?

Tiles in this part of the country are what the rain water runs though beneath the farm fields. Now they use a something else like a large plastic hose that they put under the fields for the water to drain into the ditches and creeks or rivers.

The black plastic "tile" has perforations in it. It is buried underground in areas that have excess water and they connect in a network to "county tiles" that criss-cross the area.

Original tile (in our area, is made from local clay that was fired in kilns. This is from the turn of the last century. Then they used concrete (and still do for the big "mains). Now it is mostly the black hard plastic perforated tile that is in different sizes.

It can be installed by digging a trench, but most tile is pulled into the ground now with GPS guided tile plows.

I even have my yard tiles and my eve spouts drain into them also - keeping my basement nice and dry and no dang spouts to move when i mow! One of the perks of being married to a farmer - lol!
