I'm closing on our new construction home next week and have been buying curtains in bulk. :) I need longer panels (most of my windows need 92+ inches), and I don't like most of the fabrics that are widely used nowadays (dupioni, taffeta, etc.) I don't like shiny curtains at all so that cuts about 90% of my choices. I have ordered several from Overstock. I need longer lengths (most rooms will do best with about 92") and some tailoring to length. They seemed to have the best selection of longer panels. Products range from cheap to pricey, it just depends on what you want. I ordered some of the signature velvet panels and even once I have them tailored, it will cost me less than it would've cost to buy enough comparable fabric during the fabric store's 40% off sale. JC Penney, and if they aren't on sale, just wait because they will be soon. If you have a Penney's outlet nearby, even better! AMAZING deals there, if they have anything good. BBB can be pricey, but a little hint - you can use their 20% coupons even after they're expired. And you can use one per item (in other words, if you buy 5 items, you can use 5 coupons... even in the same transaction. But you could not use 5 coupons and get something free). Sears actually has a pretty big selection. Linens n' Things - have done away with their retail stores, but they still have a web business and 20% off coupons. Try your local Craigslist, and/or ebay. Make your own? DD's curtains are made of flat sheets. They were the only thing I could find the perfect color in. And I don't really sew (I had to buy a sewing machine to make those curtains!), so the best part is that -- 2 of your edges are already finished. :)

We are currently trying to decide on window treatments for 103 windows! My suggestion is that you first decide what you need for each room. For example, in the bedroom do you have views that you don't want to block? Do you need privacy? Do you need something that will frame the windows and dress up the room? Honeycomb blinds can provide privacy but not block out light. It they can almost disappear up into your window frame without blocking your view. Sheer panels are more dramatic and soft in a room and provide privacy but do not block light. Wood blinds are great for offices and utility rooms (and they can be a cheaper option too). If you are looking for a good price on drapery panels, I'd do the faux panels that sit on the side of the windows. They aren't functional but they require a lot less fabric so they are cheaper than fully functioning panels. I'd price out Smitth and Noble but I'd also call around to seamstresses locally. That is where I've found the best pricing in the past.

Torrykm, pulling a thread!!! I was trying to figure out what you meant so I searched and that is so much easier than what I have been doing! I haven't sewn much linen before, only small craft type things, but when I do sew other woven fabric, I always pull off the threads on the cut side one by one until I get to a long, full thread, and then trim so it's even. But sometimes I accidentally pull that long thread away from the others so it isn't straight anymore, it's such a pain. I just tried it and doing it the right way you described keeps threads on both side of the guide so it doesn't move! So much faster. I have made a few curtains before, and I've always lined them, but this is the first time I've ever used interlining so I'm a little nervous. Actually, since I bought the linen fabric on sale, the interlining is more expensive than the fabric. I looked through tons of pictures and I'm pretty sure the ones I like best have heavier lining. What I notice I like is for the fabric to look like it holds it's shape and is nice and round in the header when the panel is stacked back, so I'm assuming the lining must be thicker because otherwise the fabric wouldn't be stable enough to do that. I'd never even heard of bump interlining, but I just ordered it this morning. Then I became confused because I know what I want the header/panel to look like, but it turns out different pictures (or maybe different companies or fabricators) refer to what looks like the same thing as ripple, single pleat, and cylinder pleat. I think I figured out the ripple fold is just a proprietary name for some kind of spacing strip? And possibly single pleat is mislabeled? I should have done it earlier, but I wanted to make sure I ordered enough fabric, so I was double checking my calculations for the pleats. In the past I did mostly box pleats on stationary panels and pinch pleats on others, I did grommets once in my son's room, and sort of a gathered/ruching thing on sheers for my daughter, and all of my first panels in my first place were flat. And a couple of roman shades, but I didn't like those as much as I thought I would. I want something a little more modern this time, and I'm wondering if I picked something too complicated?

Beautiful inspiration room! The curtains in your post are very simple with rings at the top. What you like about them is the color and the height. The mistake made when getting window treatments is making them too low/short/long. Install the rod almost to the ceiling. With an eight foot ceiling, 96" length is easy to find. Pottery Barn, West Elm, JCPenney and Restoration Hardware are a good places to start. I don't know anyone who has had a bad experience with JCPenney, believe it or not. Before you go crazy ordering online, determine the following: 1) Measure the width of the window and buy enough curtains for 2-1/2 to 3 times the width, even if you will be keeping the curtains open. This is what professional do and there is nothing worse then skimpy drapes. 2) Determine the length. 3) Determine the type of fabric. Looks like linen or cotton from your pic. That means stay away from polyester and silk. 4) Determine if you want black out curtains or light filtering, lined or unlined. 5) Determine exactly what rod and curtain rings you like. This will help you search for exactly what you want. Most online suppliers will send you a sample of the color and fabric, sometime free and sometimes for a small fee, but worth it. Even if the perfect curtain has a rod pocket, You can always have your tailor sew on the rings. The other good advice above is to consider getting them custom made. The curtains in the pic are not overcomplicated and I am sure you have someone in your area to accommodate you. Have them measure how much fabric you will need and either buy the fabric through them or buy online. Fabricators usually have fabric books from Kravet and other better fabric suppliers.
