Love the table and the lamps, I think the magazine picture reflects how beautiful the lantern styled chandi looks, and its style works best (to my eye) with the pendent, I'd go that route.

The problem with smoke bell lanterns (and this has been discussed a few times here) is the amount of dust they collect. I had a large gorgeous one I adored in my 2 story entry when we built our home 13 years ago, and replaced it a few years ago because it always looked dusty. If you're willing to devote the time to cleaning, I say go for it.

It looks like you like a little bling; I like the first one, though it's a bit trendy right now. But, the good thing is you can usually find that one inexpensively so you can enjoy it now, and replace it if you want in a few years.

Can we see more pics that surround the area? Kitchen etc? I love the first one but may be to blingy. Not sure. I have seen some amazing other fixtures I could go back and find for you. Are you wanting strictly brushed nickle/chrome or are you open to other finishes?

Lukki--I agree, but I thought maybe I was taking the easy way out and choosing the obvious.

Dee--I made the abhorant choice of gorgeous mahogany floors that need to be swept nightly. Might as well add the lanterns to my to do list! Yes, I like a little bling. I need to liven up the space a bit. Walnut tone cabinets and dark wood floors need some brightening.

Ak-- by all means, include any pictures you can think of! I am trying to stick with nickel/chrome. I like the shine. The pictures of my unfinished kitchen are on my work computer. I can include some tomorrow. Not much is complete yet though. Walnut stain maple cabinetry, stainless appliances, stainless bar pulls, giallo ornamental granite. The kitchen shape is a L with attached peninsula.

If course I would vote for the first drum shade chandy! A little bling is what does it for me. Plus those crystals are removable if you ever feel like toning it down a bit! Here is my go-to site for lighting ideas. They have some really unique ones and some that may interest you...

in addition to dust, etc, kitchen lights which are on often at night attract bugs... i get a small collection of stinkbugs and flies(and others??) in our open at the top globes over our kitchen table, but the glass is almost opaque, so you can't see them!

also, a few huses ago we had a large modern light over our kitchen table that had a large, thick clear glass 'shade'...it was beautiful, but i had to clean it often (dust/grease from kitchen) and it took alot of time to get it completely streak free!! having the light on at night often and hanging right at eye level, those streaks were very noticeable! (and drove me crazy! so, the light was more maintainance than i cared for!)

luvn, I love those types of lanterns especially when used in the way you're proposing. That style just makes my heart sing; I love the simplicity and elegance of it. I wouldn't worry about what it may appear to be, if you like it, go for it, after all, how often do any design decisions come easy?

Another vote for the real bling of the drum shade chandy. That's gorgeous, and would bring in the sparkle that the dark wood needs. Love your table!!

I love the lantern lights. It is perfect with the table and unique to have the 2 over the table.

Your room AND floors are beautiful! We recently bought a similar style table, and I found (finally!) a fixture we like at West Elm It's made of Capiz Shells & is rectangular. Our home is transitional, I guess, but I do like some bling here & there & the fixture offers really nice light. The metal on it is what you're looking for.

I don't have a photo, but the site (westelm.com) has good photos...just look for the rectangular capiz shell fixture.

I like the two hanging fixtures of your choices and I like that they will give light in two places on the longer table.

I also like the double lantern look.

what is the drum shade made out of? Is it something that will become dirty and/or greasy?

lynxe--you hit the nail on the head for me. it is silk. so it cannot be cleaned, BUT it is about 12 feet from the range.

ugh. i got a lot of fantastic responses to my post, but i just realized neither option may fit! my table is 90"l x 42"w x 30"h. i have 8' ceilings. from this fabulous board i have gleaned that my chandelier should be no larger than 30"w x 24"h. I am presuming that to apply the chandelier sizing rules to two fixtures you simply divide the maximum width by two? so two fixtures could only each be 15" wide?

option #1 (the blingy option) comes in a couple of sizes. the two closest to what i need are 32"w x 26"h (which is 2 inches too big all around), or 24"w x 23"h (which just seems too tiny for a nearly 8 foot table!)

option #2 (double lantern pendants) are 15"w x 29.5" h, but shade measures 11.5" diameter x 15"h. i am presuming that the discrepancies in measurement is that the first takes into account the chain coming up from the bell. so if you take the table height (30"), plus the fixture height (29.5"), plus installation height (30")...that leaves 6.5" of chain to suspend from ceiling.

do either of these options fit the space?

wow, who knew design decisions were so difficult? this is precisely why you hire professionals :)

Do not worry about the +2" on the drum- those measurements are guidelines. I would not use the smaller one unless the room was a separate smaller dining space.

I recall your space, post from last month(?), is a big open room with kitchen, DR, LR. The size will be fine over that big table in the center of your 3 living areas, IMO.
