trends in carpeting

posted this on another forum here, but haven't gotten a response yet so I thought I'd try here. We're looking at re-carpeting our home and will be selling it. I feel totally out of it with the styles and trends today. We can't afford hardwood floors so we are going with carpet. I've heard really light carpet is out, but don't know if this is really the case. What types of carpeting (colors, styles, etc) are "in" right now?. Most of the people who buy in my area are young professionals. Our walls are a tan color with white trim, if that helps.

I would get a neutral berber with little specs that help hide the dirt.

My vote is Frieze sp? (brain lock today). It comes in multi-colored too and doesn't show the dirt.

It's "in style" but from the feed-back on these boards, the people who have it, love it so much that they'll never have anything else again. Me too!

Hi, I have gotten such great help from you all in the past regarding my Shaw wood laminate. It is now time to do the flooring for the adjacent family room, and the need has become more pressing. We already had wanted to do it because we need to do new flooring on the stairs from the kitchen to the family room. I had been advised not to do floating floors but hardwoods on a stairs. When we started to think about it, the carpeting in the family room was in such poor shape that it seemed to make more sense to keep the stairs in carpeting and do the room. Since then, we came home from vacation Friday and our fish tank pump/condenser was leaking out the back and the corner of the room was damp. We removed the water from the tank and took everything out of that area. We cut out the affected carpet and pad and threw it out. There was some mold starting and we didn't want to wait. It just wasn't worth saving and allowing things to grow. We have a standard poodle so my understanding is that we should not get a closed-loop/berber carpet. I need advise on what would be longlasting. I have never ordered carpet and feel woefully ignorant. We will have it installed by a company that did a great job for us in the past. They will probably have good insight when we shop there but I value all of your outside opinions. Details about the room: 1. Room size is about 21' long by 13' wide. 2. Door from the garage comes into this room and there are many trips daily from that door to the kitchen and rest of the house. (There are two carpeted steps to the garage.) 3. There are two carpeted steps down to the combined laundry/bathroom. 4. There are two steps up to the kitchen. 5. Half the room has sofas and TV (and formerly a fish tank). 6. Half has Knex/play table, sewing machine and closet, plus throughway. Kids are age 11-16. Finally, question about color: Like so many people, we have a beige throughout our house. Would like to do something a little darker that doesn't show dirt quite so well. What are the trends in carpet color? I am not trying to rock the boat with this choice. I will not be able to start shopping until Sunday-Monday but want to dig in at that time and get something ordered. Appreciate all your advice!

So many times on this forum we read suggestions on staging, clearing out excess furniture, how to take the best of pics, opening blinds, etc. Like a prospective buyer doesn't typically have any foresight or imagination. Then, to suggest somebody sell a house with used carpeting in it and offer an allowance for new? The two ideas are incompatible. Myself, I wouldn't care one if somebody offered me an allowance, but I could tell you if that carpeting wasn't new, it would be yanked out before my furniture went in. I have a hangup about living on somebody else's carpeting, just like I would have a hangup about sleeping in a bed somebody else used and nobody changed the sheets. I have ripped out too many decent looking carpets and seen what was laying in the padding underneath, blech. Carpeting is going to be cheaper than all but the cheesiest laminates. Good laminates cost as much as hardwoods. Do not try to install laminates or hardwoods unless you have some experience. Regardless of what the clerk at the store tells you they don't just snap together effortlessly. I don't do box store carpet. I have priced them there for comparison and find after they tack on all their little service charges and hauling away charges, that you pay just about as much as you would if you went to a higher end carpet installer. I have used an independent installer for many years now, and if I am selling a house, I just drop in a few weeks in advance, and have him out to measure up the house/room. They often have really large commercial jobs where they have ordered in overage and will sell it installed at a very reasonable price if you aren't insistent on picking out one particular pattern. I have gotten really good high-end carpeting like that for box store prices and expert installations. The aroma of clean fresh carpet is like a pheromone to a potential buyer. Even if they don't particularly fancy your choice in patterns, most will live with it for awhile and it's something they don't feel they need to do before they move in.

I should have said that we have wood floors in most of home, except for carpeting in bedrooms. I too would prefer wood floor in master, but, our 30 year old wood floors are of the medium oak vintage, and I’m so “over” oak/color. I hesitate to add more of what I dislike, hence probably going to carpet again. I have considered a hard surface floor that would be a mix of wood tones that would compliment the oak hallway leading to that bedroom, but wondered if that could be acceptable. Thoughts?

We just went through this thought process and actually decided to forego the new carpeting. We wanted to put in something stain resistant and attractive and the cost was looking upwards of $6k. I work with many young professionals and the feedback I got from them was "no carpet." Apparently the hardwoods/laminates are really preferred among this set.

If you're still staying w/ carpet, and if you go down the road of seeking something that is soft, stain/wear resistant, and attractive, then I would recommend looking into the carpets made w/ Dupont Sorona techonology. Mohawk has the exclusive line right now and IMHO it is noticeably softer than the Stainmaster options we felt; it is also made from corn so it is "green." However, if you're only carpeting for show then maybe you don't want to go that route...?

Sorry - can't help w/ color. Certainly no one told me that light colors are "out" when we were pondering these issues. Multi-colored friezes were definitely pushed by the carpet places but frankly my young professional friends were not fans (!).

Wow -- thanks for the input. I had never even heard of frieze carpet. Maybe we could put that in our upstairs bedrooms and see if we could at least put hardwoods in the living area downstairs. I was afraid that carpet in general was out since my husband and I are young professionals, and we really wanted hardwoods. Still, we bought the house because it worked with our budget, and I guess we were hoping that other young people on a budget might do the same. We have a 1600 sq ft, 3-bedroom home that would sell for about $200,000, and I don't know that we would see the return on a hardwood investment in a large great room area. Unfortunately we are not handy and would probably ruin half the wood if we tried to do it ourselves.

Look at lumberliquidators.com--we used their flooring--went with the expensive stuff as we will be in our house for years but they have wonderful deals on wood flooring..
We hate carpet--but we are of the older crowd with a dog that sheds..
