trends in carpeting

posted this on another forum here, but haven't gotten a response yet so I thought I'd try here. We're looking at re-carpeting our home and will be selling it. I feel totally out of it with the styles and trends today. We can't afford hardwood floors so we are going with carpet. I've heard really light carpet is out, but don't know if this is really the case. What types of carpeting (colors, styles, etc) are "in" right now?. Most of the people who buy in my area are young professionals. Our walls are a tan color with white trim, if that helps.

I would get a neutral berber with little specs that help hide the dirt.

My vote is Frieze sp? (brain lock today). It comes in multi-colored too and doesn't show the dirt.

It's "in style" but from the feed-back on these boards, the people who have it, love it so much that they'll never have anything else again. Me too!

I'm replacing the carpet because I'm tired of living with a carpet I didn't pick, do not love and it's starting to look worn especially because of the pulls. When we moved in 3 years ago it was at the bottom of our list to replace but now it's time :-) I would love hardwood but it is not in the budget for us. If I knew we would be staying here long term I might be swayed to spend the $ anyway but I don't know how long we will be here - which is the reason I mentioned picking something in style that will stay in style. I'd hate to spend $ on carpet that might be outdated in a few years especially if we want to sell. I like the frieze style & over the last few years have seen it in many home models and I still see it in models - but I don't know if it is losing its appeal or is still very popular. I'm not really into carpets so I don't know lol When you guys say thick/short/medium pile does it leave lines when you vacuum? Or footprints? I had carpeting like that and it drove me crazy. I would vacuum perfect lines and then I would hate to walk on it lol! I want to avoid that, which is why I think a frieze would be better. I need something that won't get really worn looking with age, will be easy to clean even if it's very light in color, you know basically kid and pet friendly. If I didn't have the dog I might consider berber again because that hides spills & dirt so well, almost too well! But the pulls annoy me and its starting to get ratty looking, my guess is builder put in a cheaper grade. If anyone has pictures that would be great.

Wow, that was a blast from the past. I thought my mother had the only knotty pine refrigerator still in existence back in 1985. I was wrong! I really love the exterior style of that home; so charming and reminds me of pictures in a storybook. The inside is really unbelievable--they don't just have MOST of the 70's there, they have it all--even the barrel-shaped pub chairs in the rec room. Wow. If it was a Hollywood set design I'd be critical that it is too consistent--most homes have decor that spans at least a few decades as items are accumulated over time. But that place is thoroughly thoroughly 70's. I would love to know who lived there. The idea of carpet right next to a tub gives me shivers, but I remember well when I was a kid our neighbors had SHAG carpeting in the bath, right up to the tub.

What are the current trends or styles in carpeting?

I think carpet has it's place amongst some buyers. I used to be a Realtor and lots of buyers don't have the budget or want to spend the $$ on wood floors. I also think in colder weather, it helps to keep feet and rooms warmer. We have it throughout our upper level and to be honest, I don't understand why people think it requires more maintenance. I vacuum upstairs as much as I have to vacuum the wood floors on the main floor.. I also have to wash the floors on the main floor but I don't wash my carpet.. In our situation, the wood floors require more care than the carpet does.

We just went through this thought process and actually decided to forego the new carpeting. We wanted to put in something stain resistant and attractive and the cost was looking upwards of $6k. I work with many young professionals and the feedback I got from them was "no carpet." Apparently the hardwoods/laminates are really preferred among this set.

If you're still staying w/ carpet, and if you go down the road of seeking something that is soft, stain/wear resistant, and attractive, then I would recommend looking into the carpets made w/ Dupont Sorona techonology. Mohawk has the exclusive line right now and IMHO it is noticeably softer than the Stainmaster options we felt; it is also made from corn so it is "green." However, if you're only carpeting for show then maybe you don't want to go that route...?

Sorry - can't help w/ color. Certainly no one told me that light colors are "out" when we were pondering these issues. Multi-colored friezes were definitely pushed by the carpet places but frankly my young professional friends were not fans (!).

Wow -- thanks for the input. I had never even heard of frieze carpet. Maybe we could put that in our upstairs bedrooms and see if we could at least put hardwoods in the living area downstairs. I was afraid that carpet in general was out since my husband and I are young professionals, and we really wanted hardwoods. Still, we bought the house because it worked with our budget, and I guess we were hoping that other young people on a budget might do the same. We have a 1600 sq ft, 3-bedroom home that would sell for about $200,000, and I don't know that we would see the return on a hardwood investment in a large great room area. Unfortunately we are not handy and would probably ruin half the wood if we tried to do it ourselves.

Look at lumberliquidators.com--we used their flooring--went with the expensive stuff as we will be in our house for years but they have wonderful deals on wood flooring..
We hate carpet--but we are of the older crowd with a dog that sheds..
