Just some thought: current design trends & upholstery concern
Comments (17)I'm *not* a floral chintz person, but I love your room! The floral is very fresh and pretty, not at all stuffy or dated. Your condo is really lovely. I'm not usually a fan of slipcovers. If they're not really well fitted they can look rumpled. OTOH, it can be a nice change of pace for the warm seasons. I found it interesting reading your comments about current trends. Like with all trends, there are things I like and things I don't. I do like the emphasis on natural elements. They're soothing and warm and can even be cheap! Like my little stack of flat river stones currently on the mantel, picked up at the beach. Other trendy things I just don't like. Those stainless or aluminum chairs and barstools just look to me like they belong in police station or jail. Neutral colors are great, but I also love color. I wish I could afford a Susan Sargent rug, for instance. You seem to have great taste and style, so trust your instinct. If you continue to feel the upholstery isn't what you want, then go ahead and slipcover. But maybe give it a couple months more to let everything grow on you....See MoreCarpet Trends
Comments (11)I'm replacing the carpet because I'm tired of living with a carpet I didn't pick, do not love and it's starting to look worn especially because of the pulls. When we moved in 3 years ago it was at the bottom of our list to replace but now it's time :-) I would love hardwood but it is not in the budget for us. If I knew we would be staying here long term I might be swayed to spend the $ anyway but I don't know how long we will be here - which is the reason I mentioned picking something in style that will stay in style. I'd hate to spend $ on carpet that might be outdated in a few years especially if we want to sell. I like the frieze style & over the last few years have seen it in many home models and I still see it in models - but I don't know if it is losing its appeal or is still very popular. I'm not really into carpets so I don't know lol When you guys say thick/short/medium pile does it leave lines when you vacuum? Or footprints? I had carpeting like that and it drove me crazy. I would vacuum perfect lines and then I would hate to walk on it lol! I want to avoid that, which is why I think a frieze would be better. I need something that won't get really worn looking with age, will be easy to clean even if it's very light in color, you know basically kid and pet friendly. If I didn't have the dog I might consider berber again because that hides spills & dirt so well, almost too well! But the pulls annoy me and its starting to get ratty looking, my guess is builder put in a cheaper grade. If anyone has pictures that would be great....See MoreWhat's the current kitchen styles for 2017?
Comments (18)great advice up thread when choosing different countertops/backsplash-mind your flooring since it's a big surface that won't change. reads warm to me..you also describe it as such for a fun global look I'd go with patterned backsplash(but much warmer in its pallette that the one you're posted), simple Quartz (no movement/minimal movement) that is a good support to backsplash in terms of color, and also works with the flooring.. Maybe you decide to go with some quirky knobs. Maybe you paint the island only. You can consider changing some cabinet doors for glass if displaying things is something you like, and you're not put off with the thought it needs to be tidy all the time. It's not a lot of storage, so consider that. Have fun with light fixtures..and your kitchen while small is not tiny or dark..you can just accessorize it to your liking with ceramics and a rug and towels and plants..it's a good enough background. If absolutely in love with marble look quartz-make sure it's not too cold a color next to your floor..and don't do patterned tiles. Go with simpler tiles then. Because one of these will steal the show anyway. Too much pattern for one small kitchen. And you'll have-probably-a lot of pattern in your accessories too. Maybe even in your hardware and/or lights. These don't have to be just this or that. Of course should stylistically relate to your other choices. say, can't see cheerful ceramic knobs next to Calacatta..different sensibilities Nothing matches much in my house too in terms of decor yet one is much more restricted when picking hard surfaces for kitchen etc....See MoreCurrent Trends That Will Be Passe Within Two Years
Comments (4)Granite has been in kitchens since the early 90's. hardly a trend. I don't seeing it going anytime soon. what else besides quartz can you put on your countertops? (I consider marble, quartzite and other stone in the granite family). Formica had it's 4 decades,,,until granite came along. i guess we will have to see what takes it's place. Niches have also been around for 25 years, if not more. With people using more sophisticated hair products and bath gels, people need somewhere to put those things. I happen to like niches and stone countertops. I don't think they will be departing soon. Open floor plan,,,i'm just god-awful-tired of hearing that phrase. every single show that's all you hear,,,,"I want an open floor plan so I can entertain". Seriously. how many people entertain all the time? people don't realize how noisy it can be if someone is cooking, has the vent going, and someone else is trying to watch tv in that "open floor plan" room! But, it does look nice when decorated to the nines. and this thing about 'seeing my kids while I'm cooking". I don't even understand that part. When we were kids we were never even allowed in the kitchen (and it was closed off!) . Half the time we were outside playing and had to be called in to even eat. These helicopter moms that need to watch their children 24 hrs a day,,,I dunno. I mean, if they're toddlers, yes,,,but c'mon,,,kids grow quickly. you don't need to always see them while you;re in the kitchen. and that's another thing,,how often are you in the kitchen?? Are you a short order cook? ok,,my rant is done....See MoreRelated Professionals
