New Quilt/Wall Hanging Challenge Quilt

OK, Ladies, I have come up with another idea for a challenge quilt.

This Challenge Quilt can be wall hanging size, or bed size, but must be a minimum 36x36. I have arbitrarily chosen this minimum size because we don't want a lot of potholders masquerading as wall hangings. hahahaha

The subject for this challenge is:

My Life In Nine Blocks

1.You may use conceptual art, representational art, traditional blocks, anything that creates a block that represents some portion of your life. These should create a kind of biography when put together.

2. You may create more blocks if you wish, but nine is the minimum.

3. This is a pretty straightforward theme. Judging will be based on execution and workwomanship. The entire forum, including the participants, will be eligible to judge.

4. Deadline for submission is OCTOBER 15. Plenty of time to let the idea stew around, and to create your quilt.

5. Pictures will be posted on a post created expressly for that purpose. Pictures must be accompanied by a write up explaining your entry.

6. There will be no prize this time, only the joy in winning.

I love all of these quilts...you all do amazing quilting!!! Each one is lovely. I have to say the Dahlia quilt is just stunning...love those colors! And tuppermom...that musical quilt is so special and beautiful...and Nanajayne...the blue and brown quilt is spectacular! I think my favorite thus far is the one I made for hubby in batiks, posted last year. I'm hopeful there will be another favorite in the works soon. Geraldene: (Sorry, I took so long to answer your question. Phone service was off--we just got back on today.) In most of my pictorial quilts where there was a face, I drew the features on with a Black Sharpie. In the one I did in honor of my grandmother, I embroidered the features. For the one I made in honor of my parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary, I decided to make a wall hanging with too little time to applique, so I drew the entire picture with a Blue Sharpie--actually, I drew it with pencil, then went over it with Sharpie. Finally, I hand quilted over the lines. I think it looked fine, but I prefer the look of applique and I love the 3-D effects. There are actually some other 3-D elements on Lemon Blossom and the whole figure-clothing etc. has an extra layer of batt, so the figure seems a little raised from the background. Carole

Why limit yourself? Why not try them all? I would skip e bay, but you can check recent sales there and see what quilts have sold for. I'm betting it's a pretty low amount, but it's worth looking. I think you'll see more at $15 than at $150 or at $1500. Place a couple on etsy. Then tell everyone you know about etsy and get them to tell all their friends! Spend a Saturday hitting several street markets in the city and see where people are selling their art. Ask a vendor or two there what kind of permits they are required to have and how you go about reserving a spot. Think of it like any job hunting - it takes work and time to find out what's available. You're lucky to be in NYC because you don't need a car to get around. (and probably couldn't find a place to park one if you had it!). Start small and take a few of your favorite quilts to one of the street markets and give it a try. See what shoppers are looking for and how they react to your prices. Quilt during the week and evenings; work the market on the weekend when the shoppers are out in larger numbers. It's not a waste of your time because no one can sell your own product with the passion that you'll bring to it. It also lets you see and hear what buyers are interested in. "Gee I would love this if only it were pink!" Some of it will make you crazy but it's all worth hearing. Place ads in the free newspapers around the city. If you think your work is fabulous, take a few to small local galleries and ask if they are interested. Lots of small restaurants display art for sale, so why not a quilt or two? Doesn't hurt to ask. Take one to a artist's co-op. Even if you have to share the sale price, it's a way to get started and out in the marketplace. It's a good way to find out what people will pay for your quilts too. Tell all your friends that every time they have a party, you want to display at least one of your quilts. Someone at the party may be your next buyer or they might have friends who invest in art. Print up some postcards with a pictures of a quilt or two and leave stacks of them in all the bars and restaurants! Donate one to a favorite charity that's having a public event and let them raffle it off. Of course, your name as the quilter/donor would have to be prominently displayed! What great advertising! This is kind of funny, Marti. My guild's challenge this year is very similar to this but has designated the size/shape to be either 1/2 or 1/4 of a circle of some dimension I forget. But it also needs to be done in October.

I'll stew over it...errr, I mean think on it and we'll see what happens!

How ironic - I'm finally piecing my personal, adult version of an "I Spy" quilt - each block represents something about me, or my interests. Hmmm....maybe I'll do this. It will definitely be done by October.

Have you ever heard of a 'meme'? Rhymes with 'gene'. Richard Dawkins posits that a meme is an infectious idea, that spreads, usually consciously, but at times unconsciously, around the population. Interesting that I came up with this same general idea as the guilt guild and another one of you. Ko-inky-dink? I think not. LOL

Scraphappy - What a neat idea! I may have to "borrow" your idea ('cause that sounds better than swiping it!) for a "me" I Spy quilt. I love that!

I like the idea.... does the quilt pattern need to be our own idea, or can it be made from instructions purchased in a kit, but using one's own fabric?

Use whatever you want, do whatever you want. The only stipulation is that there is a minimum of 9 blocks and each block must represent in some way a time of your life.
