Kimono Quilt Wall Hanging

I made this kimono quilt wall hanging for my DD's college-graduation gift. The quilt was designed by Brenda Dean and was published in the Vol. 14, number 7 issue of Australian Patchwork Quilting. The finished size is 21 inches x 22-1/2 inches.

Although I wish my blocks were all straight, I suppose it will have to do. I am still a novice quilter, but I tried so hard to ensure that my blocks were straight as I added rows. I truly enjoyed working on this interesting piece. It took me a while to figure out how to fold the kimonos, but now I think I'll never forget how to do it. I can't wait to give it to my DD. I hope she will like it.

I've hung quilts in a number of fashions. One quilt I made for someone I put tabs on...to be hung on a rod. I think if there're enough tabs, the weight is distributed. If the wall hangings are smaller, I use general sewing straight pins...leaves a microscopic hole in my wall! Instead of a full hanging sleeve, I've also done this: Before the binding is sewn on, take a square of fabric and press it into a triangle. Align the raw edges with the back corners of the quilt, then sew the binding on. Once the binding is done, there is a space for a rod or dowel to slip in...This wouldn't work for a huge quilt though. If you use a dowel rod, it could hang on small rod hooks moounted to the wall, or maybe the ends that extend outside the sleeve could be hung by wires from a drop ceiling, or from plant hooks mounted on the ceiling (there are even plant hooks made to mount on those metal supports for drop ceilings).

As a Labor and Delivery RN, I have seen several of these. I think my favorite one was made out of 30's repro fabric. It was square or almost so and was displayed in Mom's hospital room as a table topper. I don't know if this was its intended use or not, but I guess this way it wouldn't "interfere" with the color scheme in the nursery as much as a wall-hanging might. I think there were probably four rows of fabric separated by 2 inch sashing. These row were made up of approx. one inch wide strips of random fabrics. This made many "boxes" for people to sign and write messages. These rows were maybe 8 inches long. This would make the quilt 40- 46 inches or so. The quilt had been to her showers and was at the hospital for staff and visitors to sign. Hearts were handquilted in the sashing pieces and I think the strips were probably SID. THe patient told me when she was in labor that she had "a blanket that I needed to sign but it was in her suitcase". I worked the next day and went to see her. I couldn't figure out what kind of blanket that I was going to sign. I about died when I saw this quilt her mother had made and handquilted for her grandbaby. Another story of perhaps the recipient not appreciating the time and effort this took!

I would definitely use the walking foot for even feed of the quilt, it can be used for stitch-in-the-ditch. I would not do the vertical lines first, you might wind up with puckering in the horizontals. I would start in the center blocks and do all the horizontals from the center blocks out and then do the verticals. You didn't mention how large these appliques are, if they are pretty large, you could use the walking foot to do an echo quilting around the bears, not real close together. It would take a lot of manipulating and you would have to go slowly but it would look good. But if you don't want to go that route and you don't do FMQ, the stitch-in-the-ditch would work fine.

I love the fabrics too. I hope you newbies appreciate the fabulous selection of fabric available today.

(This is going to be one of those "when I was a girl" stories) In the 70's, you couldn't find a decent calico. When I did my Lemon Blossom Quilt, which could have used the beautiful Japanese prints, I was hard pressed to find anything that would pass as Japanese. Most of my early quilts were almost always in solids because I couldn't find fabric prints that fit the theme of my designs.

I also love the folding 3-D aspect of the design. I started that in the fan in this quilt and have used tucks in many of my other designs. I don't have a color pic of Lemon Blossom, but I have a black and white. I had just turned 40 and felt so excited about what you could do with quilting. Yes, glasses really were that big in 1980. Oh, Carole--that is a magnificent quilt. I will have to show this photo to my daughter. I love the quilting, too. It perfectly complements the theme and style of the quilt. Thanks for sharing this terrific photo and your story.

Thanks Amcofar. The kimono blocks are so delightful. I can imagine this piece being handed down for generations of girls in your family, being fascinated by the patterns. I have always felt the tactile aspect of a quilt or wallhanging are nearly as important as the visual. Your quilt definitely has that quality. Great quilts. Amcofar, I really like the fabrics in the sashings and border.
Carole, I can see the tucks in the fan. I like the Japanese lady.Are the facial features embroidered or marked on?

Your kimono quilt is lovely and a labor of love to be sure. We have a lot of Asian fabrics in the store I work in and some of those look familiar. Beautiful job.

Wow that is just smashing. I love the Three D effect!

I'm sure if I got a level out I might be able to find a crooked block (on ANY quilt) but looking at the kimono quilt I would not thing "oh, those blocks are not straight." The whole thing, from the 3-D effect to the fabrics you chose -- SO VERY COOL!

Carole -- I love yours too -- very nice! Very artistic, would love to see the color version. The glasses? No comment! Just kidding. ;-)

Geraldene: (Sorry, I took so long to answer your question. Phone service was off--we just got back on today.)

In most of my pictorial quilts where there was a face, I drew the features on with a Black Sharpie. In the one I did in honor of my grandmother, I embroidered the features. For the one I made in honor of my parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary, I decided to make a wall hanging with too little time to applique, so I drew the entire picture with a Blue Sharpie--actually, I drew it with pencil, then went over it with Sharpie. Finally, I hand quilted over the lines. I think it looked fine, but I prefer the look of applique and I love the 3-D effects.

There are actually some other 3-D elements on Lemon Blossom and the whole figure-clothing etc. has an extra layer of batt, so the figure seems a little raised from the background. Carole
