Getting frustrated with prices and layouts - Chicago Area

The more I look, the more frustrated I get. I thought that I would look at some lower end cabinets to get a better grip on pricing. The last two prices that received for Aristokraft amd Mid-Continent cabinets were higher then most of the other cabinets that I thought were a better quality. Has anyone else experience this?

Also, I'm getting frustrated with kitchen designs. I give them what I have and what changes I want and they come back with things I requested to be changed.

Anyone know of any good places in the Chicago area to buy cabinets that a reasonable price?

Aries61- I am in your boat too! Trying to find reasonably priced cabinets and thus far all paths have led me to Ikea. If you have not checked them out in person, I suggest doing so. While they do not have a ton of door styles they do have styles that are more modern and those that are more transitional/traditional. Best part is now through May 1st they have a special where the cabinets are at least 10% off-- maybe more if you buy their appliances. Good luck!

do you have some xtra time? I took a drive to Shipshewanna Ind.[Riegsecker Cab.], found Amish Cabs to be hi quality.If your plan is straightforward-you can perhaps deal with them via email and phone, etc. Other people have used Ayr cabs:there are more, and not necessarily hi priced.

Stooxie, thank you. The first thing I did upon seeing the RNB (after I wiped the drool off my chin) was ask the dealer if there was a local BS service person. There is! Weissman, thank you, you are absolutely correct. I didn't see your post before I left, but the dealer said the EXACT same thing. There are indeed geographical price restrictions, although the out-of-area shipping thing is a little weird. She explained it all, including the fact that any other dealer in the state has to charge the exact same price. They do offer a discount for cash, though, to offset the cc charges. But they can't offer any further discounts, like to contractors or designers. Foodonastump, thank you. I have settled on the BS after finally seeing it in person this afternoon. Oh, what a BEAUTY!!! And....after all my carrying on...their price is BETTER than anything I found online, even with a whopping tax bill *sigh* I think, though, I might go with the RCS since the difference is only 4k BTU on one burner and a couple of thousand in price. I can use that money for a REALLY nice sink :-) Oh, no, wait, I need it for the range hood! I'll see how the cabinet bids come in and then decide.

graceshan - that's a beautiful pic! We also considered an L shape banquette, but it kept throwing off my table size and ability to walk behind the chair on the other side if someone was sitting there :) Thanks for sharing the blog, I'll definitely check them out. I just started one as well... lavender - for the banquette, I'm going to do a farmhouse table with a pedestal base. Depending on the actual table I get (leaf or no leaf), I may need to get one with 2 pedestals. But, I definitely want to get a pedestal so it's easier to get in/out. And, if someone is sitting on an end seat, we estimated there would still be about 12" of space behind them. So, it's not a complete perfect aisle, but enough that the person on the bench doesn't feel "stuck" :) And, most of the time, it will be my boys on the bench - and they have skinny little butts :) The fireplace is going to look like it was an old brick fireplace, but have a gas stove instead. And, yes, those are bookshelves on either side. I really wanted a much bigger design, but the space wouldn't really allow it. Here's the idea behind the fireplace design... Oh, I'm so glad you're going with the chair and, yes, I think it fits your home's era better. And now I'm wishing I had radiators to snuggle up next to. :) And I love new words that are perfect. Cantries. I have a cantry, too. Two open shelves in my kitchen with quart-sized mason jars full of beans, peas, grains, rices, and baking supplies. Love it. It makes me remember to cook with them more often, too, so we get more variety. My shelves are 6" deep and they could really only be 5" and still have some bare shelf in front of the jar. Does that help? Cantry, lol, I can't wait to use that word. You should have airflow for your potatoes and onions so, yes, to mesh or nixing the drawers and having open shelves with baskets for them. Don't store them together. One makes the other go bad quicker. I forget which. And I think every kitchen should have a stool. You don't need a planned overhanging counter to use one. If you don't have pull out breadboards, you can always lay a cutting board over the top of an open drawer. It's nice when you've been on your feet a lot and have a big task. I also keep a TV tray close by in a closet so I can put a bowl on it and then have it lower than me and peel things down into it. I'm unsure about the rest of our layout issues. I have a hard time reading that much detail in your plans as the background is so dark. Hope somebody can weigh in on that. I think your kitchen is going to be so cute and comfy. I really hope you'll come back and share pictures of it when you're done. Ya know, that's really why we help people, so we can drool over their finished kitchens lol.

newbieremodeler: I've looked at Ikea cabinets and don't like them.
herbflavor: I already had Riegsecker quote be on cabinets and they have been the highest so far. I had another Amish cabinet maker quote me already to and they were less expense, but their layout was terrible.

I've linked an older post of mine with kitchen plans. Still have not found a plan that I've liked 100%.

Maybe it's time to take a step back and figure out the layout first, then get cabinet quotes?

Since each cabinet quote is for a different layout, you may have a bargain in the pile, if you weren't comparing apples to oranges. Or, you may simply have an unrealistic budget for the number of boxes you need.

Get a layout you like (invest in some layout software if you need to), then take it to a store like HD or Lowe's where the quote will include the cost of each individual cabinet box, pull-out tray, finish upgrade, etc. Then, you can decide if you need to take out some bells and whistles to make the project work.
