I winter sowed all I had, and have never tried them before from seed. Only one yellow I had collected from my own plant, and just wanted to see if the seeds would germinate. I'm grateful for the other columbine thread where we were cautioned they may take a very long time so I won't get impatient and throw them out too soon, will have to water them once the tops come open, probably shouldn't let them dry out if it doesn't rain. Those lovely red ones (Swallowtail) were so different, not sure what red you're talking about, but they were only 10 seeds/pkt, and I passed them up, have been extravagant enough as it is. Now if I have good fortune, I will have several varieties of columbines and am not keen on them crossing, would welcome it for some. But you never know. I don't know how much of a tendency they have to cross or revert. One of my yellows, not the whole plant, just one part, had some red in it, every year, didn't care for it. If say my Nora Barlows cross with Blue Star or some odd kind I got, I would probably save seeds but don't know if they would stay true to form or not. I don't even know if they do cross if too different.

Bryce - I delived the M basjoos. Then I found out there is a llama farm outside town. Cool. Herd between 35 - 60 head. Lots o dung to choose from. The musas were transplanted to two large pots. The soil mix is as follows: 1/3 llama dung, 1/3 mushroom fertilizer, and 1/3 miracle grow potting mix. That was last Tuesday. By Friday, the plants had shown a good deal of growth. About an inch per day. They should do well. I am to get status pictures as they continue to grow. Cheers then. Have a great weekend.

Do you collect cookbooks?

I collect cook book and cooking magazines. I have a shelf dedicated to my cookbooks in a bookcase in my living room and I have a red bin in the kitchen for the newest cookbooks and magazines. I usually don't follow recipes except for baking but I do get many ideas and tips from them. The magazines are the floor of a closet. My favourite cookbook is my Mom's old Five Roses Cookbook. I always pull it out when I make pancakes (should have memorized it by now)LOL This is the same cookbook that I cut up for a grade school project LOL my Mom was so mad at me. There was a page of cuts of meat and I cut out each individual piece of meat for the project LOL. I love cookbooks that churches and groups put out for fundraisers. They always have little stories in them. I also have a cookbook from the 1800's that was my Great Grandmother's but the pages are crumbling so don't often look at it but it is cool to have. Love the recipes on how to cure what ever ailment you could think of during that time period. I have gotten some wonderful cookbooks from friends at GW during swaps here and from the Cooking Forum Anne

Where do you keep your cookbooks?

I have 5-6 frequently used cookbooks displayed on my counter in a deep corner with bookends. The covers coordinate with my kitchen :). I store others in a couple of stacked vintage picnic baskets in the dining room next to my kitchen (the woven type with flat wooden slat tops). My favorite cookbooks are those that were compiled by local civic groups and churches for fund-raisers. I live in a small rural town where everyone knows everyone and I love the recipes that are shared by the older generation. I make a jam cake that was in one of the older cookbooks submitted by my DIL's grandmother. She loves that I still make that cake. My butterscotch pie recipe was submitted by an older lady that lived down the road from me most of her life. It calls for butter "the size of a walnut". Love that recipe. Both these ladies have passed away.

You got a great deal on the SL cookbooks. I have 1979 through 2001. I just ran out of room for any more. I love the pictures. I have the Master Index which you have to buy separately but worth the $$ if you have as many books as I do. Some of my older ones have been used so much they're pretty ratty looking. Even with every recipe in the world already on the internet, I still like to look through my SL books.

I have the 1980 edition of "Cooking Across the South" and I dearly love it! I use it frequently, although some of the recipes make Paula Dean look like a little 'ole Northern gal!

I have bought their annual cookbook every year since they started putting them out. I have 1979 through 2008. I also have a Master Index, but it is not current through my most recent volume. The funny thing is that I don't cook anymore, but I still love looking at the books. I have 2 daughters and 4 granddaughters. Hopefully one of them will enjoy using these books someday.

I think the best cook books are Jr. League cook books and church cook books. Our church published one a few years ago and it is wonderful and I know who the good cooks are!! Recipes that a group puts together are usually tried and true recipes and you can count on them being good.

Yes Vannie, those are the best cook books. Our church's cook book comes out this summer sometime and I am looking forward to it. I have a lot of those and so enjoy just reading them.

I have been a cookbook collector for years. I guess it's my way of making up for not cooking. Like Vannie, I prefer the ones put out by Jr. Leagues, schools, churches, offices, and neighborhood organizations, charities, etc. I have an entire bookcase full of them. The only problem is finding which book has which recipe when you want it. I don't buy them nearly as often anymore. There is such a thing as running out of space and practicality is starting to take over as I'm getting older. I'm finally realizing that I probably never will take up cooking again. Still, I love reading through them.

Catlady, I have "Calling All Cooks Two". The color is red and also put out by the TPofA of Alabama in 1988.
