Minky Baby Quilt & Patchwork Puppy

Here's a simple baby quilt I made recently using one of those 1/2 jelly rolls (20 strips, not 40), plus 3 or 4 fqs. It's not a complicated design but I really like the way it turned out. I used Minky on the back of the quilt and had enough fabric left over for a patchwork puppy.

I loved working with these colors!

That is so cute and I love the colors. Is the minky had to work with and did you use batting as well?

Minky always feels like it's going to be a challenge but it isn't at all. I use a thin batting - on this I used bamboo, but on others I've used an old flannel sheet. I wouldn't try free motion quilting on it, but with a walking foot it doesn't stretch at all.

This is my third Minky backed quilt and I am beginning to suspect I'm addicted to it. No, really, I can stop any time I want!

I'm trying to follow a strict program for quilting HA,HA,HA!!! don't fall down laughing!!! I posted the prayer quilt I finished & am doing BD blocks. I FINALLY have my Piecemakers squares from the 2008 swap together & got the backing fabric. Soon, very soon ... This quarter I've had lots of essays to grade & am teaching Romeo & Juliet for the first time - and one class are very reluctant readers - so it's quite a challenge. DS also thought he was going to be laid off from his job so he went out & bought a puppy - needless to say, he didn't get laid off (yet). He's a field engineer in the oil industry so he left yesterday for a new rig assignment (usually 18-24 days) and we are taking care of this dog. Our dog Penny is a miniature Australian shepherd & FINALLY out of the puppy stage (she is 1-1/2) and now we have Max, a 10week old Siberian husky. DH is retired but not happy about all the time this puppy is taking - and it has been sick so he's been to the vet 4 times in the last week! Penny is being pretty patient since she has been an "only-dog" and almost like a little mother - until he takes one of her toys! It's not warm enough in Colorado for us to enjoy the 2a.m. trips to the back yard! This is Penny & Max under the table resting. Max - with chew toys. Good to hear from you Geri. Thanks for posting! Hi Kat, I've become very fond of using Minky this year and I'm happy to share my experiences with it. There are two previous message threads you might want to look at for pictures and comments. This is the baby quilt I made recently, using Minky as the backing: Minky Baby Quilt and Patchwork Puppy And this is the 3.5' x 6' sofa quilt with Minky backing I made from the Lotto blocks I won in February this year: Lotto Block Quilt. I love working with it! I does stretch but if you use a walking foot, the quilting isn't a problem. I would NOT try free motion quilting or anything too detailed because the small amount of stretching could be tricky, but with straight lines or mild curves, it's fine. I used more pinning than I normally do but that's all I did differently than normal. Your quilting lines will not be very visible on the back on the quilt, but I would recommend using a thread color that matches the Minky as closely as possible. Be prepared for a mess when you cut it because it sheds like crazy at the cut! Also be prepared for everyone who touches it to ask you to make them a quilt with Minky backing! It's irresistible. And if you have cats, you will not be able to keep them off of it. Because the Minky is so soft and a bit thicker than regular backings I used very light batting. In one I used a flannel sheet and in the other I used the thinnest bamboo batting. Both worked fine. Hope that helps! Kate

@Kay -- geez louise, I still have not gotten around to figuring it out or playing with that quilt. I can post pics of it here, but, this is a DAYLILIES forum ;) Shall I post it under the quilting forum? I sort of flubbed the quilt by ear as I went along. Well, I started out with an inspiration from someone's blog, but realized that her graphics and measurements were pretty off and so ran the numbers through a graph paper/adding machine and came up with something. I don't know how to best approach it and I have no experience doing FMQ. I have a truckload of working vintage machines and I could do a grid (I think I can stay on a grid, 1/4" or so from the seam -- but the seams don't lend themselves to across-the-quilt stitching as they don't align. And what to do for the huge center block? I do have a machine that will do "serpentine" stitching -- simple or "doubled". Okay, so I'll post it here with a few pics. Sorry daylily aficionados. As I say, up page, I was going to use that chenille like dot fleece, but it is not warm. Also I don't want to chase it all over. Maybe I will just use simple low loft cotton batting and the blue print in the top photo (at perimeter). I have so many MUST DOs and this project is falling off the ship. Any ideas of how to just finish this simple stroller sort of blanket? Thanks. Oh, I guess the dimensions are about 36 inches sq, but more of a rectangle. Cotton fabric, unwashed, mostly. Guess that was a mistake?

My only goal is to do SOMETHING! It's already getting hot, it's 88 degrees on my front porch in the shade, so maybe that'll get me back inside. That's funny about the biscuits, that's the only thing at that restaurant that's worth eating IMO. They have similar ones at Ruby Tuesdays so since we like their salad bar we can get them there. Donna, glad you're healing, just don't overdo. I do have some strips and scraps looking at me after I went through and sorted them all into color families - (probably 6 huge bags worth). I had asked my Grandson, aged 14 if he would do me a huge favor one day when I had to pick him up due to an early release day, just for laughs. When I explained what I needed done and showed him the bags you should have seen the look I got! LOL! So I told him I would pay him $10 to do it. Well you know the rest of THAT story. So I said "how much money would it take?". He couldn't come up with an answer. The only thing he could think to say besides "no" was "why?"

That is adoreable. I love Minky but haven't tried it yets. Have used fleece which is soft but not as nice as Minky. Is this a gift? Love the added puppy. TFS Jayne

I like those colors...I've always been a fan of the blue/green combo. And the little doggy is adorable.

Yes, it's a gift. A good friend of my husband's just had his first baby. I'm not real close to the family so I admit I hadn't keep track of the due date. Two weeks ago DH said "Were you going to make a baby quilt for J's little one? It's due next week." Yikes! Of course, it doesn't take long to make a baby quilt and this simple pattern went together quickly. We'll be visiting one evening this week to see the baby and deliver the quilt.

Rebecca, I made a minky nightshirt and I love it! I took my favorite, comfy nightshirt and just laid it out on the minky to cut out the pattern. It's got cap sleeves and I would recommend you not make something with much of a sleeve - stick to sleeveless or cap sleeves - because the fabric is warm. Probably not the right thing for the hot flash crowd! LOL But very cozy, soft and snuggly.

What a darling quilt. And I love the colors as well. You have inspired me to try a minky quilt; I've wanted to do one but I've heard its really hard to work with. Thanks so much for sharing.

Just use a walking foot and you shouldn't have any problems with it, at least not on a smallish quilt. The other one I made was 4'x6' and even that worked without bunching or stretching. I thought I was making that one for me, but it turns out I was making it for the cats. I can't keep them off of it. Cats and babies like minky as much as I do.

Really cute and I love the idea of the matching puppy!!! I love th4 look and feel of minky but I haven't tried it yet.
