I just found the introduction series and enjoyed reading it all. So much in common. But, it's probably too late to tack onto the bottom of that now.

I am a newbie here, not new to quilting. I just love all of the discussions I see. So, I'll be hooked to this site as I am hooked to quilting. It's keeping me sane. I really believe a person can't have too much fabric and it's amazing how much I've found at garage and estate sales.

I don't understand the retreats, groups, organizational things I'm seeing mentioned. How does one start getting into retreats and birthday groups?

Introduction wise: I am 66, now retired, live in a large house taking care of husband and elderly blind uncle with two more elderly near by. Out of pure boredom I started watching Alex Anderson on TV once I moved in here and had cable and since I live near her, took a class she taught. Then I jumped in and took more classes, bought books and went to any show I could get to easily. I live near San Francisco so there are many shops and sources around me.

I have sewed since a child so it was easy to take it up. I use deceased aunt's old Kenmore and grandma's Elna. I gave my Singer to a granddaughter. We have 11 grandchildren but none local. I fly to see them in Oregon, Las Cruces, NM, and Boulder, CO.

I so enjoy reading about all of you. Just getting female conversation again is so refreshing.

Hi Julie, What is Silver City like? Gosh, I don't know where to begin. I grew up in Minnesota and am now back here where I started. I really like the climate in Silver City. I used to tell people that it's far enough south to have mild winters but high enough in elevation (6,000ft.) to have nice summers. We'd never get that unbearable heat like El Paso or Tucson. The average annual rainfall is about 16 inches with half of that coming during the rainy season of July and August. Starting on the edge of town is the Gila Nat'l Forest, 1.5 million acres to roam around in. I've always been an outdoors guy and raised 4 sons down there that love to hike and camp as much as I do. The Nat'l Forest ranges in elevation from about 5,000ft to over 11,000 ft. Silver City is about 10 or 12 thousand now, not the sleepy little town that it was when we moved there in 1985. It even has a Wal-mart now. But, to do any serious shopping you have to go to El Paso or Tucson each at least 3 hours away. I don't believe I have any pictures of the town itself, but I could share some of the surrounding areas. Great Mexican food there of course. That's probably one of things I miss the most. You just can't get decent green chile up here. What else would you like to know about? Ron

Hi, my name is Lori from suburban Chicago. I have to admit I am a bit glassy-eyed from reading this thread...it will take a while for me to remember you all. I am glad to meet you and enjoyed reading your stories. I laughed when I read about the Hookers... I used to tell people I was a drug dealer (I am a Pharmacist, part-time, large chain) I am closing in on 50, married to my college sweetheart (27 years) have 2 sons, 18 & 17. My first memories of sewing are in 8th grade. My mom was an awesome seamstress, but I mostly leaned on my own. I did some garments through high school and college, left sewing for a while, came back when I had kids. I found less pleasure in sewing for boys so I started sewing for my nieces (dresses, doll clothes). Then my college roommate (home ec major) sparked my interest in quilting. My first quilt was for a beloved pre-K teacher who's husband was being transfered to MN. It wasn't a "quality" product...I had the kids (3 & 4 year olds) and their parents to my house to make quilt blocks using fabric paint and who knows what...then I pieced it and stitched in the ditch. That started it all! I will admit here, although most who know me, know this about me.. I am a fabric junkie. I have yet to complete a successful rehab of my addiction. I don't think I own a quilt that I have made. (UFOs don't count) The pre-K teacher's quilt got me started on a series of teacher's quilts. I made a quilt for each teacher (through 6th grade) when my youngest son finished the grade. Both sons went to a small Lutheran school, one son right after the other.. I kind of felt like it was combat pay for the teacher, surviving both boys. I had a common theme for these quilts, Each year I would trace the hands of the students in the class and formulate a quilt around the choosen theme of the school year. My youngest son transfered schools after 6th grade. I had planned on his 8th grade quilt to have had a current handprint and an "original" handprint (from JK or whenever a student arrived at the school), but that quilt never came to be. I found the GardenWeb when I was doing a kitchen rennovation a couple of years ago.(a 20+ year in the making project) I stumbled upon the quilt forum when I did a google search on longarm machines. I recently purchased a Tin Lizzie (used from Ebay) I haven't recieved it yet, a bit nervous about it. I own an old singer (was my high school graduation gift),an antique treadle machine, a babylock serger (LOVE IT)and my workhorse Brother Ult 2001. I also love machine embroidery (many of my quilts have some embroidery somewhere) and digitizing. It's kind of amazing for someone who never thought she had an artistic bone in her body.(Math and Science -yes). I am currently working on: 1. a quilt for an assistant pastor who is retiring. (should be working on that right now...) 2. college for son A (senior in high school) 3. college for son B (junior in high school) 4. sorority items for nieces and friend's daughters... found I loved to make gift items when my oldest niece joined a sorority her freshman year. I have made tote bags, pillowcases, night lights, sweatshirts, pillows, photo albums..My favorite is the quilt I made for my niece (picture in the gallery) Notice missing from this list... housework... never on my to do list if I can help it. I live in Sweden and came here from the rose forum on recommendation from Rosefolly, probably around 2001. Books and gardening are my main hobbies and I am especially interested in roses. I contribute regularly to a rose society newsletter. I have been married for 47 years to another reader. We have a son and daughter and five grandchildren who all live fairly close. Our daughter lives in the same village. I retired three years ago at the normal Swedish retirement age of 65. I worked at Uppsala University as an administrator my whole working life and dabbled in translation in my spare time, mostly various academic papers on computer science and sociology. I didn't understand much of the first but a little more of the latter. I translate mostly from English and a little from French, German and Danish, the latter three only if I am familiar with the subject. Another hobby is languages and linguistics. I didn't major in anything either as we don't have that system. I spent too many years at university studying political science, economic history, anthropology, general history of literature, English and Swedish. I know English well but my active vocabulary is much smaller than my passive vocabulary and my grasp of idioms is not perfect so I sometimes feel intimidated because there are so many clever writers here. My taste in books is catholic. I am reading The well-tempered garden by Christopher Lloyd at present and by my bed are two books I first heard of on this forum, Motherless Brooklyn and the complete Mapp and Lucia.

Have been pretty much a lurker for years, posted occasionally and found this site via GardenWeb. I'm finishing up my MLIS (Masters in Library Science) and work full time at a hospital as a medical librarian. Before that, I ran the transcription department in that same hospital just short of 10 years. I live in San Pedro California, a sweet little town on the coast of SoCal, not too far from Long Beach and south of L.A. School has reigned in my "fun reading" but now I can begin to relax and have at it! I love mysteries and just finished the Deborah Crombie series. I also like Peter Robinson. In fiction I just love Rumer Godden; I re-read her wonderful books periodically. Amy Tan is another wonderful author. Barbara Kingsolver (SP?) and Ken Follett too are wonderful. There are many others, but I can't think of them all! Many new and wonderful books I get from this website - someone is always reading something that interests me! My husband of 34.5 years is a retired CIO. His passion is aviation and WWII. He builds large scale model RC planes. Seriously, these things are BIG! We have two very spoiled (indoor) cats. Now that my academic endeavors are almost behind me, I plan to tackle my neglected garden, my (long) lists of TBR books I've been making - for years now - and assorted needlework projects, i.e. knitting, cross stitch, crocheting. Not necessarily in that order!

Welcome Linda, The birthday groups form in September or October for the year that starts the next January. When you see a sign up post you jump in and sign up. Each group consists of 13 people so that each person gets 12 blocks on their birthday. The 2 retreats were formed last year and this is the first time that we are doing this. Colleen

welcome Linda! Sounds like you have a lot on your plate, but like the rest of us, quilting keeps us sane!

As for the swaps, generally someone has an interest and posts that interest. If there's enough feedback someone (generally the original person, but not always) will work up the details and post them and acts as hostess. We have everything from block swaps, fq swaps, challenges, strip swaps, anything there's enough interest in. Oh, and the birthday swap Amy started a few years ago got so popular that this year there are 5 groups I think! This is organized in the fall for the following January birthdays. If you do a search, you'll find the original post that explains it all.

The retreats are a new thing. One just happened in OK, and I'm hosting (with my able assistant, Teresa) another one on the NC/VA border in October. Again, there just seemed to be enough interest in getting together and meeting face to face so we stepped up to the plate and offered to organize them.

Glad you found this bee...it's a wonderful group of women! If you have questions, be sure to ask...you'll get plenty of good answers.

Hi everyone,
I am new to this group also.
I used to go to another forum but didn't like the changed format. I have been quilting since 1978 when I took a quilting class and made a full sampler quilt all by hand. I learned a great deal but the fabric back then was terrible. I have loved quilting every since then and have hopeful learned, improved, & developed a varity of techniques along the way.
For a while I had a sm. business where I make mostly wallhangings and lap quilts but discovered that the market was limited and only a few were willing to pay for the value of handcrafted items.
I have been married to my DH for 56 1/2 years, have 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren, 6 1/2 greatgrands. Whow!!And I am 74 as of last May. I have been retired from nursing (OR) for 9 years. Although I loved every minute I am greatful for the time to sew and read.
We live in Upstate NY in the Fingerlake region in a sm. city called Canandaigua.
I enjoy reading about everyone. What they are doing, where they live, and all the wonderful information they are willing to share.
It is nice to be a part of such a cordial group.
