I like your green shutters. They look very nice with your brick. If it were me, I think I'd go with another wood tone stain. A deeper color like dark walnut and I'd stain the door and trim around the door all the dark walnut. I think with your brick and green shutters, a very dark wood door would look really classy.

But if you want black, I think that would work too. Just a little stark for your warm brick and green shutters. But, if you go black, I'd paint the trim around the door black too so it just looked like it was part of the door. I think the light color around your windows would be way too light against the black.

I have a similar door which I truly intended to paint black. Imagine my surprise when I came home one day to see that the builder had stained it like yours! I would try the black...keep us posted!

I have always wanted a glossy colored door .. sort of like the Door of Dublin. I just wasn't sure if there was another color that went with my Brick and Shutters....

If your door is like my ThermaTru, it can be stripped and restained --if that's the way you decide to go. They also recommend that the door be resealed every so often. I haven't actually kept up with the process on my door, but it does accept touch-ups when necessary. I'm sure I'll have to break down and strip the whole thing someday soon. If I remember correctly, they have more info about the strip/restain process on their website.

Thanks for the tip on the website. I guess it is a fiberglass door.. so it may have to stay stained.. in which case I will probably just darken the stain color.

How about a complimentary colors to your shutters like a deep burgundy or a dark rich red mahogany?

I have to check out the website to see how to strip the top coat off w/o damaging the FG, but you *are* supposed to use the gel stain (and their top coat which is $20 for 20 oz! But you could probably use spar varnish or anything with UV protector). I'm going to strip and stain, topcoat my uncle's Stanley door as practice b4 I do mine (his contractor messed it up - it's all blotchy). I picked up a couple of kits clearance from HD (special order return?) in English Walnut - that might be dark enough for you. I don't know when I'm going to do his door, but will post pics when it's done.

And if you want a European glossy door, I highly recommend a door kit from Fine Paints of Europe.
We used their paint to do the front door, side door, and shutters of our previous house black - the house was a gambrel colonial with beaded weatherboard front and rear, and old brick ends. The boards were ivory, the trim was white, and it looked wonderful.

When we did it, FP of E used Shreuder Hascolac in the kit, which is what we used. They are now offering Hollandlac under their own label, and from the specifications, I expect it's the same thing. Our painter said it was the best paint he had ever used. It gives the door a bright, almost lacquered shine, and it wears like iron. If you are interested, call their toll-free number and ask them. They are extremely helpful
