Still there? 2 tips: FIrst, I don't think you really just want to prop it up against the wall. It's going to shift, wobble and just won't look "right." There are pieces of hardware you can get to adhere it to the wall that won't leave huge holes in the wall (in case you are a renter or tend to change your mind). Go to the website www.hangmanproducts.com and look for the hardware that's 2 pieces for hanging mirrors; one piece goes on the wall, the other on the headboard, and they fit together (you "hook" the one on the headboard over the one you put on the wall). A brilliant invention! (No, I didn't invent it! Nor do I have a financial role in it.) Second, the HGTV show "Myles of Style" -- episode about a "Boutique Bedroom" -- showed a very cool, simple upholstered (yes, padded--that's impt for the luxurious, not skimpy, feel!) headboard. She used 3 horizontal panels of a beautiful upholstery fabric in complimentary colors--really beautiful and a simple look. The HGTV site for her specific show has a video of the room (and probably a rerun date for the show itself).

In various homes and various bedrooms over 40+ years, I've never bothered to attach the headboard to the bedframe. Of course, all the headboards are held upright by the wall behind them and the mattresses on the bedframes in front of them, but they've not been a problem. I've had to raise some of them because of the newer and taller mattresses, but you can use inexpensive bed risers to raise the height of the headboard. Helene

I understand exactly what you're thinking of doing! I am sure that this can be done, but it might require a furniture-maker to arrange the frame correctly. If you are handy though, I don't see why you couldn't make it work. Could your upholsterer come over and share his opinion? Our guy both could and would do that (come over *and* rebuild the piece). We are planning to do the same thing, only with a new sofa, because of my issues with arthritis and a bad back, to give me lots of support in bed. Our favorite local furniture dealer said that he'd be able to get us the upholstered frame only of any sofa we wanted. The only thing we'd need to do is get accurate measurements so that our queen mattress and box spring would slide in. Of course, it will look like an always open sleeper sofa, but with the right combo of upholstery and bed linens, that would be fine with me. Good luck with your quest. I have really, really bad allergies, so this may sound extreme. I take allergy meds year round, and at the recommendation of my doctor, I bought special covers called encasings for my box spring, mattress, and pillows. They prevent dust, dust mites, and other allergens. I do wash my bedding often, dust/vacuum often, and have a HEPA air purifier in my bedroom, and a HEPA filter for my furnace, to reduce allergens from the air. You spend many hours in your bed, far more than on any other furniture, and you are lying down with your face very close to your bedding (and headboard). I wouldn't get an upholstered headboard, unless it had a removable, washable slipcover, and you were willing to vacuum it often; or, a leather one would work.
