Blackout roller shades

Does anybody have some blackout roller shades you'd recommend. I need some that would last for a while and would be used daily as in pulled up/down.

I want to add some underneath my daughters valances, but outside mount to not remove the existing 2" blinds and not have the light come in on the sides like inside mount would. I want to use the blinds for naptime as I want her to be able to sleep even if there is some light, just want to sleep in some on the weekends.

I hung some blankets to see if it would help sleeping in and the darker room in the morning. It sure helped as well as falling asleep earlier during the week so she actually gets more sleep during the week when she has to get up early.

I found these from JC Penney, but I'm a bit leary after reading the reviews saying the springs failed after 1 year. I guess for the price I could get another, but really don't want to have to replace that often.

Is this a permanent fix for a temporary problem? Would drapes work?

I would expect to use these for several years. She is only 2 years old so I don't want drapes at this point.

Real wood horizontal blinds will let in a lot of light between the slats (to wake you up at dawn), and can have a heavy look, so I wouldn't use those in a bedroom. I think a curtain will have the problems of proportion because you can't take them to the floor with the heat baseboards, while short curtains will look odd. I would go with roman shades as Deb Zilch mentioned; there are pretty fabrics you could get, and get them lined to make them light blocking. Alternatively, cellular shades but with a double honeycomb to make it more light blocking.

Terrrible experience w/ Graber, Bali, Lowes, Fedex looking for better

Well it is clear I won't use Fedex again and looking for another manufacturer who will allow buyer to pick the carrier. They could have a boxes that says Better, Worse and Worst and Fedex would be the Worst box. I called Smith and Noble since could not find anything on their site about shipping which is odd. No search bar I could find either. Talked to a guy there and he was in sales and he knows nothing about what shipping goes with what company they use for roller shades which is in NY. So that was a non answer answer and I could tell they were avoiding this sore topic of shipping with buyers on their site and with sales. Fedex is a deal breaker for many now. I also called The Shade Store and the gal there knew they used Fedex so at least she knew but again it is a deal breaker. So for reliability avoiding Fedex is a better strategy. Something is really going bad at Fedex and all you have to do is search online threads and Reddit has a ton of them for many of the big hubs around the U.S. It is not just one hub. Also current and past employees are now shedding the light on why there are so many problems with Fedex right now. This is systematic. Again any drop shipper would have to be clinically dead not to know about Fedex problems that use Fedex since many I have spoke with have confirmed they also know it is worse than ever. I did find one outfit out of Nevada who will make me custom shades with Rollease parts if I wish and will ship UPS and they are made in the U.S. where as Bali and Graber are made in Mexico. Waiting to hear back from them. Maybe they can help with the problem I have with Graber Rollease Skyline clutches sucking up the bead stops and locking up. http://www.blynco.com/

I have no idea what the brand is but we've had our black out roller shades in our bedroom for close to 20 years and they are up and down every single day. I bought them at a local independent hardware store - not sure if those even exist anymore! Never had a problem with the springs and the edges aren't even frayed. We did the opposite of your set up. Ours are inside mount and I have a roman shade that is outside nmount, that 'hides the blackout shade. No light leak to speak of.

If I had to buy them again, I'd contact an independent drapery house and ask what they use. They do more than the pretty curtains and have to offer a quality product. It will probably cost more than a department store but if they work trouble fee it may be worth it.

I've had those shades in my bedroom for 4 years. They get rolled up every morning and pulled down every night. They're still working fine.

Any shade could break at any time, I guess, but I have various JCPenny shades and blinds in many rooms and they've all been fine.

I have some blackout shades from Country Curtains. They're on a pulley chord and work well.

I was going to recommend the pull cord version as well. The loose cords are a hazard with children, but you can mount the cord on the wall.

Thanks Everybody!! I appreciate the suggestions. I think I'll try the JCPenney ones and if they break re-visit and find some other ones. It is good to hear somebody who hasn't had any issues with daily use

I would prefer not having any cords or anything that sticks out so when not in use they are completely hidden.
